What a beautiful song, timeless. B. rocked on this album, knowing that all instruments were also played by him makes the song even better. Simply a gorgeous voice, how I love and admire this artist!!!

This song plays in my head every time I see someone trolling on the internets. "Should I douse the spark or fan the flames or merely think of clever things to say?" "Tried to run away, but they have a talent for making trouble seem enjoyable." I bet Brandon Boyd is a master troll when he want's to be.

I think the interpretation of this song by most people is perhaps over analyzed. I believe the song is about having an open relationship or non traditional one and the situations that ensue in that type of relationship. Have you ever seen the flirtation of your lover in front of your eyes and struggled with your ego's back lash as it happens. All the while knowing that if you fan the flames or douse the spark the results are beyond your control. Fear of losing what you love, while allowing your love to experience new loves is not an easy task.

Presently, the future is in the middle of a love triangle, With calamity and me in the corner starting to feel uncomfortable, Should I douse the spark or fan the flames or merely think of clever things to say? The more I try to separate, the better it fells to get right in the way. And I try so hard to get out of the way of that runaway train. Oh, how I do love the rain. Seems to me that being in the middle is starting to get me in trouble. I tried to run away but they have a talent for making trouble seem enjoyable. The more I try to separate, the better it fells to get right in the way. Should I douse the sparks or fan the flames or merely think of clever things to say? And I try so hard to get out of the way of that runaway train. Oh, how I do love the rain. Runaway train And I try so hard to get out of that runaway train. Oh, how I do love the rain. Runaway train

Brandon is fighting a struggle but his life lies within the "belly of fait" or The Beast. All of his lyrics are about his Pagan experiences. This is why he asks himself if he should stop, "douse the spark", or continue, "fan the flame", or express, in secret, what's going on within himself, "think of clever things to say." Maybe his very expressive solo album is the line he crossed, hence the song, "In The Company of Wolves". "our intuit we're taught to deny & our SOUL we're told's for SELLING"

I personally think that this is a great song and a great pick for a single off what could be described as a very laid back, etherial release. It's refreshing to hear something so organic from such a successful rock figure! I love the opening of the song. "Presently, the future is in the middle of a love triangle." The sound of the acoustic guitar along with the percussion has the most earthy and simplistic feeling to it. Heading to the beach soon and I know I'll be bringing along this album.

I personally like Brandon singing with Incubus rather than by himself. I'm sure I'll be bombarded by "How could you even say that?" questions but his music by itself is a little too indie for me. @hilary4477 It wasn't intentional. The sound quality isn't lower because it was recorded in a live and raw manner. All of the grunge bands succeeded in retaining that organic feel in their recordings. A sound engineer tried to make it sound louder AFTER recordings were done, resulting in the sound quality going to shit. Look up articles on the "loudness" war. Distorted sound quality does not equal an "organic" sound.
