I think you hit it right on the head when you say he nails skin tones. I'm a fan of his work and I've tried recreating his look. I feel like copying someone's style and taking what you like from it and changing it to suit your own taste is how you can find your own personal style. I've been using a "cotton candy" preset for Lightroom with decent results, but your tip about overlaying the sparkles and bokeh really help to achieve the Brandon Woelfel "inspired" look.

Looking at his before and afters on his website really gives good insight into how much he relies on editing. He is a Photoshop master. That's not to say that he isn't phenomenal with a camera though. You're totally right with the mimicking others work comment. Without inspiration from others, we future artists wouldn't have a basis to start on, and maybe wouldn't have even started creating anything at all without getting excited about someone else's work. Inspiration is the bridge into exploring our own territory. Keep it up man. I look forward to seeing your work.

One suggestion: When you add the sparkly layer, dont erase but add a layer mask and paint black/white/grey on it. It's non destructive and gives some extra control and the option to bring stuff back that one erased by accident.

I'll admit that masking isn't something i'm super comfortable with yet, so I didn't use it for this tutorial. I thought it would save time and I wouldn't look like a complete moron teaching a technique i'm not 100% comfortable with yet. I still have tons of stuff to learn, clearly haha. I'm editing on a mid 2011 21.5 inch iMac with 14 GB ram and a 2.7 GHz processor. I'm looking to upgrade sometime in the future, but this one works for now. I got it refurbished for cheaper than usual on Apple's website.

Aaron Hurt I'm thinking of getting an Apple computer just for photo editing in the future but a bit stuck on which one. Leaning towards iMac but for the price I could go for a way better Windows machine, or go an advanced route and get 2 graphics cards and emulate windows within Linux.

iMacs are great for editing from my experience. The price can be steep and I'm positive you could build something more powerful for less money. It all comes down to personal preference. I like Apple because I get a rock solid editing platform thats easy to use and has few problems right out of the box. I have a few friends who edit on Windows and they love it. So, if your budget allows and you are interested in Apple, it might be worth a try. If not, Windows will still work wonders for you.
