Why The M109R Is The BEST Muscle Bike I've Owned

I've owned my 07 since 2010. Had 4500 miles on it when purchased. Now has around 18k. I don't plan on getting rid of it. Its still a head turner.

My wife gifted me last March with a '07 M109R. It was a total surprise, though she knew it was at the top of my list of bikes I wished to own. It took a lot of work to get her back into fighting form, but it's a beautiful bike and I'd say a step up from my old '02 VTX Retro I had years ago. I've loved every minute of the maintenance (motor mounts, steel lines, tire & fluid changes, ECM programing, pair valve, and on and on) and after each job felt the bike/rider relationship with this particular gift all the more stronger. I too hope I won't ever see it leave my stable. If I get bit by the 2'nd gear gremlin I imagine I'll seek to get it resolved as well to keep it on the road. It may not make sense to pay that from an outside observer's perspective, but we humans are funny things that defy common sense all the time. I can't wait to do my east coast trip on this thing this summer.

WOW, nice job restoring your 2007 M109. Do you still have it? Regarding the gear issue, I know that people are to blame for the gears failing. Most people who don't know anything about engines or motorcycles, they have a way of completely destroying a car engine or destroying their entire motorcycle in the span of several months. I can't logically tell you why, but it has to do with people not having common sense, not having any idea how mechanical machines work, and so they abuse the machines in a way that we would NEVER do. For example, accidentally slamming it into gear without remembering to pull in the clutch, or doing a full power downshift with no clutch. I can almost bet you money that some riders forget to pull in the clutch, and don't understand how the gears even work at all. My highschool friend used to revv up his automatic Toyota then slam it into gear to do a burnout, it was a nearly new car, and he didn't have any idea that it would ruin the car.

Great video. Mine destroyed 2nd gear after about 3 months of riding back when it was stock. Turned out to be the best thing that could happen as it forced to me upgrade the transmission to the point it is today. Easily the best bike I've owned. Also your car is an Australian Holden commodore with some slightly different plastic parts. There's literally millions of them over here if you ever get stuck looking for a part

@@MuAlJawi no. The truth is suzuki never addressed the actual problem but they changed some things that reduced the wear that leads up to the problem. I've seen 2019 bikes with failed 2nd gear. But the first 2 generations were definitely worse

man i gotta say my old suzuki gsxr 600 was my favorite bike. i learned how to go fast and get low on it. but i've sold that off to save up for the newest version of the m109boss. i threw my leg over a lot of different bikes and it was the only one that made me feel small. at six foot one and 260 some odd pounds i'm not short enough to feel comfortable on any harley or even the honda shadow, which was going to be my go to until i sat on one and felt like i was on a kid bike. i sat on the m109boss for a second and immediately knew it was going to be my next bike. you are right that they make so many parts for these bikes it's hard to want to give it up. love your vids and how you present your content. stay safe my dude and keep the rubber side down.

I have a 06 M109 and it probably one of the best bikes i've own to this date with more than 100k plus it is still the most talk about bike i ride. i've been all across the country with it and living in New England the weather limits my time to ride. Sometimes i think the second gear is the rider and not the but i could be wrong. It is a very good bike i gave up a 01 GSXR 1000 with 32k on to make the change and now i have my fleet of bike to do different types of bike rides

I use to own a Suzuki VS 800 intruder that bike was lightweight. Plenty of torque a lot of fun to ride like the Yamaha virago, but I preferred the intruder because it was quicker and the engine was smoother. However, I’m not criticizing Yamaha for they make great bikes as well. I had my mind set on buying the M109, but after my brother told me how heavy it was I said forget it because I used to own the VTX 1300 Honda and it was getting too heavy for me. I’m only 5’8 and 61 years old so I decided to get a smaller bike so I went with the SV 650. I’ve read a Lotta good reviews on that one and it is a lot of fun to ride and is very reliable. It’s one toughly built bike I ❤ it.

Brandon, I found a 2010 Victory Vision Tour ABS a year and a half ago, well kept with only 11,000 miles on it. The previous owner had died in a work accident and the widow sold it for 6000 dollars. It only needed a brake bleed and oil change to get it perfect. I have put 7000 miles on it this past summer with no issues. I am 6'5", 280 lbs and almost 67 years old. It is hard to find a bike that fits someone my size without extensive modification costs. The Vision is a perfect fit. It seems to do everything I want to do with it very well. Maintenance is easy and cost effective and the Freedom 106 engine is so simple to work on. This may go down as one of the best vehicles I have ever had. I plan to keep it long term.

I like the importance you give to parts availability. I never want to spend a lot on a new motorcycle, so I buy older ones and get them working. I found on my first bikes, that were mid-80's Hondas, that most of the parts were only available used and I could never be sure the parts I bought would work. Then I got a mid-80s BMW and found BMW still has parts available for their bikes back to the 70's and some older. At one point I heard when they run out of the old parts they retool and make them again. Because of those parts availability, the old beemers make great project bikes. You mentioned trying to decide which of your bikes you like the best. When people ask me which of my bikes I like the best, I tell them my favorite bike is always the one I'm riding at the time!

I still love my 2016 M109R1 B.O.S.S. (bought in 2017) All I have is a K&N filter on it, so far, but I have an exhaust and Power Commander to put on it soon. I've had my bike tuned as it is right now, and it was putting down 110hp to the rear wheel, so I think it's safe to assume that most stock Boulevards are similar.

My favorite bike is my 2007 M109R I still have to this day. I’ve been blessed to not have that 2nd gear issue or many issues at all. At this point I’m my life I will be keeping for the rest of my life as I do like the Indian Charger and Chieftain, but over the years I’ve modified the bike to fit my body and I’m quite comfortable with it. As far as electrons I have put on navigation, radar and lights and HID on the headlight. Music and phone comes to the helmet. And always garage kept so no rust. And even new the 109 has the best power to money ratio, I feel. Faster than a new CVO and is 35k less.

The M109 needs to have a full touring edition with a windshield. A tall windshield and cruise control, would really make it a perfect bike for long rides. The new Cheiftain has a larger engine with less horsepower, but similar amounts of torque. But the Cheiftain Indian has a really nice cruise control and full windshield.

Nice vid, thanks. I never even knew the M109R was still in production for the US market. Here in Europe (where we know it as M1800R or VZR1800) that doesn’t appear to be the case. I’ve had my 2007 in the classic black and chrome for some 7 years now; I also have a Kawasaki Z1000SX but if I could only one it would be the M1800R. It has the power, unique styling and sheer presence that make it stand out, it’s so-o-o comfortable and handles so nice, once you get the feel for its dimensions. There are literally only 2 changes I’d like to see if they ever brought out a new model; add ABS and a gear indicator.

My favourite car I've ever owned was my 1990 Toyota MR2 Turbo, Targa Tops, black, it was just a go-cart for the road. I loved that car. The only car Ive ever regretted having to sell. I replaced it with an RX-8, (as the missus said the next car had to have back seats, a boot and four doors) but it's just not the same. Now Ive gotten into bikes. A Yamaha vStar 650 got me to my full licence, and now own a 2007 Suzuki M50 Boulevard, and love it. My daughter has a Ninja 400, (and lets me ride it occasionally) and got it for a very similar reason to this M109, there will be parts for a long time as a popular bike, but now discontinued for the Ninja 500 (actually just a stroked 400 engine up to 450cc, so the marketing name is a lie) so there's still going to be a lot of parts around.

The 109 is an amazing looking bike. In 2018 I bought a 2001 Honda Shadow 750 Ace, in 2015 I bought my 2004 Honda ST1300, in 2021 I bought a motorcycle camper and for 2022 I plan on buying a 2014/2015 Honda Valkyrie muscle Cruiser even though they stop making the Honda Valkyrie in 2015 because the valkyrie is basically a Goldwing there going to be plenty of Parts if I need them in the future because it shares its platform with the Honda Goldwing I don't know if you've found your fueling problems but good luck stay safe and ride safe

I recently bought a 2014 M109r. The exactly reverse colours of yours. I had to replace the entire clutch after only 20k miles. But that said, it’s an awesome machine. I don’t think I will ever want another bike.

I can tell you the best bikes. Don't share the list with anyone. 1.) FJR1300 6 speed. 2.) M109 3.) VTX1800 or VTX1300 touring edition. 4.) Honda Transalp 750 (best sounding twin ever? Sounds like a beasty V-twin with it's special 270 degree crankshaft). 5.) Indian Chieftain with cruise control (biggest engine, most low end torque, has a full windshield if you want. Cost a billion dollars.). 6.) Indian Scout (People seem to love them, although I would want the Chieftain's beautiful looking air cooled engine). 7.) Indian Challenger (insane power, and 1.8L engine like M109 and also liquid cooled). Cost $30,000 new. 8.) Goldwing (dollar for dollar, there is no better value. These have zero resell value, nobody wants them). 9.) Hayabusa (also dollar for dollar one of the best deals in motorcycling, usually meticulously maintained by older owners). 10.) DR650, KLR650 enduros. Just awesome, but sound awful with a single cylinder engine. 11.) BMW GS1250 (this is the most popular motorcycle in most of the developed world. But it does suffer somewhat short gear ratios and unnecessarily high cruising RPM, as most motorcycles do). 12.) Kawasaki Z900RS (Considered the best performance retro bike from any manufacturer, is the most popular bike). 13.) Royal Enfield 650 twin. Just look at these. The used bikes are going up in value, it's one of the best looking retro bikes ever. Take one look, and you'll want one.

Do NOT buy: 1.) Moto Guzzi (too much vibration). 2.) Harley Pan America (not reliable). 3.) Sportster S (not reliable. The new Harley liquid cooled engine suffers bad electronics). 4.) Kawasaki W800 (dangerous weak chassis and handling, with speed wobble when new. Unless you want to upgrade the shocks and tires, which is possible). 5.) 5 speed FJR1300 (too low geared, but good). 6.) Goldwing 1000 (bad clutches on first Goldwings). 7.) DR650 or KLR650. Both of these are great if certain issues are adressed, the DR650 shifting drum bolt, and KLR cam chain tensioner must be replaced. 8.) Kawasaki Vulcan (some had plastic gears on the oil pump I believe, and would fail. But I am not 100% sure). 9.) ZX-12R Kawasaki. The ZX-12R had a bad oil sump design and would explode. They didn't recall it, they quickly stopped making it, which is why they instantly made the ZX-14R instead which is a very good bike. 10.) Early Indian models (bad suspension without progressive springs, and not good ride quality).

I think Suzuki could revamp the motor for a bit more power and torque, and update to a 6‐speed transmission for better highway cruising. Maybe some suspension tweaks. But I'm pretty happy with mine.

I agree with you 100%. I still have my 2012 M109R that I bought brand new. I went thru 5 other motorcycles after the 109 and sold 3 of them after 3or 4 years. I sold my 2015 Sportster 48, 2017 Concours14 & 2018 Vmax but I can’t seem to part with the 109. I currently also have a 2021 Rocket 3GT & a 2022 Triumph Bobber. I think, if I could get my hands on a Thruxton and the Goldwing, I’ll have a pretty solid stable of bikes. Also want one of those Kawasaki W800.

Hmmm favorite car would have to be my 1998 Dodge Intrepid. It was literally unbreakable. Transmission issues took it out but not after having the vehicle for 20 years and running it ragged. I loved that car. If I win the lottery I’ll pay Dodge themselves to build a new one

I'm glad you retracted. I just got a 2008 m109r a couple months ago. I felt your first video was a little harsh. I admit the first to second gear trans is not as clean as I would like, but it become second nature pretty quickly to just be firm when doing that switch. Like anything manual, it just takes some time to develop that muscle memory, then it's smooth sailing.

It wasn’t. It was to bring awareness to the 2nd gear issue. There’s no reason a bike should drop out of gear from 2nd to neutral. That’s literally dangerous and can get you killed in traffic.

I just gave up my M109R this past July and traded it in for a 2021 Harley Street Glide Special that I absolutely love. My M109 cut off on me in traffic and i was done, it was probably a simple fix but I don’t know how to fix motorcycles and when I went to Harley dealership I absolutely fell in love with the street glide special plus my M109 was not comfortable to me. Just wish I had made this move along time ago now I got alot of Diamond audio speakers and amps to sell that came off my m109 smh

Current favorite bike would be my suzuki s83 boulevard. Got it dirt cheap just to truly try out a cruiser and I love it. Was looking at 109r's and others but am happy I got this since it really handles pretty good being 200+lbs less. Not sure why i still like it so much compared to my multiple other bikes, but it always makes me smile. Also, some ancient bikes have large community's that sell parts. Me and my dad are into moto guzzi's and the big block motors they made for 35 years with quite a few interchangeable parts. I know BMW is the same. All depends on the bike. Still want a proper muscle cruiser like a rocket 3 or vmax but am pretty content as is.

Great video. Great lookin bikes. I love the M109R for the looks more than it's power but the muscle bike that I really wanted since before I ever threw a leg over a motorcycle was a Vmax. I finally got a second gen recently and wow is it one helluva machine. An M109R and a Ducati or two are definitely next on my bucket list.

My 109r original 2006 model has been nothing but a beast of a bike I've never had any problems until I took it in to replace my clutch cable and It was only after that did I had to change my clutch plates I don't know what they did but my bike has not been the same. even with that issue, I'll still be buying a 2024, The 109 is the bike for me Suzuki to me is the bomb, going back to my 1982 GS1100E days I seriously thought about Harley but no can do. I'm faithful to my Suzuki like she's my wife lol

I tend to not worry about parts for a bike. Most manufacturers support them for 10 years. If you get an older bike that had a 10 year production run, you will have a lot of bikes with parts. I do go to eBay and look at a model I am thinking about to check if there are bikes being parted out, etc. It helps ease my mind that I will be able to find them. I want to take on an older bike project, but I am not that confident in my skills yet either. I am taking on wrecked bikes, but only ones that I know I can get parts. Favorite Bike was an 86 Heratage Classic. It got the chrome treatment. Lower fork legs inner and outer primary Cone cover lifter blocks rocker boxes transmission end cover and shifter cover. If you don't want to polish aluminum paint it or chrome it. Andrew Ev cam Mikuni carb. Plus the the overdrive pulley set up for the Electro Glide. Rode it up and down the Easter Seaboard and to Canada. Favorite cage was a Ford Econoline van 300 ci straight six. Damn good engine. My Labrador loved the view from the passenger side. @@BrandonBicasso The single advantage to Chrome is windex and a paper towel will clean it. But never wipe it with a dry cloth or towel. The result is tiny scratches which mar that smooth shine. Cheers have a good ride today.

My first real bike, is also my current bike. A 2016 Yamaha Stryker. Got it brand new in 2018. I have loved it so much. I've only ridden a couple other bikes in the past. Last year, I was able to test ride some Indian models, and the Pan America. It really opened my eyes to how much is lacking in my bike. Not so much with power\performance, but with comfort aspects for sure. The Stryker is a sport cruiser, and has a pretty stiff ride. The seat is pretty bad and starts to hurt after only a couple hours. The clutch pull is also very heavy, which I didn't realize how heavy it was until I rode other bikes. Non of that is a deal breaker by any means, and I still love the hell outta my girl. The Springfield Dark Horse is my dream bike right now. Rode it last year and fell in love. Great power, super comfortable and handles great. I still want to try and ride more bikes this year to experience more.

Being 6'5" with a 36" inseam M109 is one of 3 motorcycles I've found to be reasonably adaptable for comfortable operation. +3" forward controls and or a +3" taller saddle would be perfect. I'm currently on a "slightly" modified KLR. The Concourse would also need a custom seat.

I sold my custom Victory Hammer last year now looking at both these bikes as an option for my next. Any advise on the M109R? Is that tranny issue only on the older bikes? I like the blacked out versions anyways, the matte grey limited edition (2017)? being tops for me but they all are cool. Prices are decent on these and some of the Vrods too, not as good as a Victory but I've been there done that might be time for something else. I used to own a 2006 streetrod and it just felt small compared to the Victory and I'm only 5'9' do you find the 109r a more stretched out bike than the muscle? The reach of bars and pegs seems a little wonky on the muscle also. Great content as always.

If you want to find parts for your pontiac g8, look to the aussies as the car is actually an australian car, a Holden Commodore with a few cosmetic parts swapped such as body kit and has been converted to left hand drive. There is a lot more of these in australia but they are discontinued here in australia too.

Suzuki sticks with what works and it doesn't stop at the 109. Their DRZ400-650 have been around basically unchanged for 20 years and again, still available new. Like you said, just change the colors. :)

I sold my 2008 M109R because it had a tiny bit of a miss to it at lower RPMs. I new that it was more than likely a map valve,wich is why I traded my 2002 Yamaha warrior XV 1700 straight up for it in the first place. I think I had right at $1,500 in the Yamaha, and the guy was asking $5,500 for the Suzuki. That was one of the better deals that I have ever had, but before getting the chance to plug off the map valve a guy in Nashville Tennessee offered me $5,000 cash money for it. After selling the Suzuki I ended up getting another Honda VTX 1800. My m109 had the same color of paint job that yours has,wich reminds me of a 1969 Camaro SS for some reason.

Brandon, I just got a 2009 M109R. I think it has almost 22,00kml on it. It is very clean. What book do you recommend I get to do my own maintenance on this bike. I’ve been riding sports bike for over 15 years, from the day I rode the M109R, I fell in love with riding a motorcycle all over again. The Gxsr750R was felt like a shore, rising to work quick and that’s it. Riding the m109r feels like an adventure and it’s an enjoyment altogether.

I would also like to see some updated Suzuki Cruisers across the board. It seems they are very into their sport bike lineup like the GSXR and the Hayabusa, but they are more or less ignoring their Boulevard/Volusia lineup. I'm currently riding a C50, and it would be nice to trade it in for a more modern C50 or C90, but right now other than a slightly different visual change, it's the same bike.

Hey! Yes, the windshield helps a lot. I’m able to ride up to around 140km/h without as much buffering. And when you get off the bike, you don’t feel like cardboard. This is the one I got. I've got a 2006 with 100000kms on it. 2nd gear is clunky but fine. I suspect 2nd gear failure is caused by the angle of your right wrist

Not gonna lie...the M109R is my first dream muscle bike. If I could ever fit on one without needing to be straight legged to the pegs, I'd happily throw money at it. I currently own and daily my second love. The Yamaha Raider. 10k on the Odo and no issues yet. One anoyance I have is its throttle. It's not very smooth. I go from no power to all the power. This summer I'm ordering a tune and an airbox kit to let her breathe a little better and smooth out that throttle. The biggest issue I have with my Raider is that Yamaha discontinued them in 2017. Finding any aftermarket or OEM parts is difficult and always expensive. I wanted to cry when just the backrest cost over $200. If the worst were to happen and me and her end up on the ground, there's a good chance that I'll be looking at a total replacement instead of repair. Due to the extensive effort it takes just finding parts.

Great story I currently own a 1989 Kawasaki zx10 bike was put in storage for several years but would like to bring it back to life, starting looking at the m109 love the bulky quality of the bike my question is do you have any recommendations on someone trying to bring back to life a Kawasaki zx10 with a major problem with gas tank pitted with rust on the inside trouble finding a new tank because of the age.

You’ll probably have to run vinegar through the tank then recoat it to prevent rust again. And then change out the fuel filter and purge the injectors. There’s videos out there on the vinegar idea and tricks on removing the rust.

The 109 is almost certainly going to need a major update at some point thanks to emissions BS. Hopefully in the process of updating it they can cut off some unnecessary weight. I loved my v-rod, though I begrudgingly sold it since it had been beat to hell and I didn't wanna fight it to keep it on the road lol. I am looking to sell my Low Rider S though, awesome bike but it's really just not worth the money. Been tossing around Boulevards (both versions, the C90 and M109, real shame they don't really make a C109 lol) and some of the bigger displacement Yamahas. M109 might be my next baby, just depends on what the market has to offer when I start looking lol. You clearly ride it a lot. I have some pretty horrible lower back issues and sciatica. How is comfort for you for longer rides? Thanks for the video brother

Hey, I’m pretty comfortable on it. I’ve put 500 miles on it in a day with a passenger. That was without a wind screen. Lots more comfortable now with the windscreen as it prevents rapid fatigue. I recommend it!
