Dumbest decision of my life was running out of gas on 59 on my way home from bartending at 4am. Coasted into a gas station on bissonet and saw first hand the tragedy of prostitution. Words can’t describe how terrified I was. I was 22, platinum blonde, white girl wearing my bartending corset, booty shorts, fishnets and knee high boots. I truly believe the only thing that kept me from getting robbed or raped was that I looked too much like I could be under cover. Minnow in shark land.

As a former Houstonian, it's sad to see what has happened to Alief. I didn't grow up there, but I have friends who did, and I attended some summer sessions in Alief in college. It was a nice area 30 years ago. I heard it had gone to shit but to see the level of depravity it has sunken to is shocking. It's a shame to see all those young black men and women going down a glorified path that will lead to ignoble death, prison, or a destitute old age. Quick money is alluring but it often comes with strings and really shitty lifestyles that are not sustainable.

Growing up there in the early 90s to early 00s, it’s crazy to see what the Southwest side looks like now when I visit Houston. It looks like a war zone. It used to be a really nice and well-to-do area (middle and upper middle class). He wasn’t wrong when he said most people there can’t say they’re from there because a few decades ago they couldn’t afford to live there and the racial make up was completely different. We left that area in 2003. After Katrina, nothing was the same.
@lumensauce31994 ай бұрын
Some parts of Alief do indeed look like a war zone but overall it's just a busier place, more crowded with a lot more businesses. As long as I am mindful, I don't feel that it is *that* unsafe. Just avoid certain parts and certain times. Lots of great places to eat there still, better than what was available in the '80s that I remember. The infrastructure of today's Alief is also better than what we had out there in the 1980s also.

First time I drove through there I couldn't believe what I was seeing. One lady stood out the most she probably was only 5ft tall but had on some extra tall heels and her hair was done up to look like she had two ice cream cones in her hair. I didn't even know street walkers were a real thing. I was just going to a house party that drove through there. My wife and I were in disbelief at what we were seeing.

Learned a lot lol. Thank god that area is hard to get to. You’re either in southeast Houston or on the north side. If you get to the west side of Houston you’re probably on the freeway going out of town
@SkillTrill7134 ай бұрын
You sound like somebody who’s definitely not from Houston. The SW side has everything Htown has to offer for a tourist.

@@SkillTrill713 yeah a Texans game or rodeo. Alright alright the Sugarland area is pretty sweet. They’ve really worked hard on making Sugarland a cool spot to go out to. 59 is a fucking nightmare though

I moved to Houston in ‘88. The first place I lived was on bissonet. I had a black girlfriend who was a HPD officer, she told me that I needed to move out of there! 😂I had no idea what was up. I was new to Houston.

Whats sad that area used to be sooooo nice. I used to go to Slyvan tutoring over there. Used to go to Westwood mall all the time. Loved going to that Dilliards and got my school shoes over there. Even bought my BMW and truck at the BMW lot there.
