Closest case I can think of is Page's solo in Stairway to Heaven A good chunk fits the A minor pentatonic, but yes, at certain moments he added more notes from the A minor scale that make it richer

@Zorro7269

@@adamf.4823 You can, and I honestly think I’ve become more creative because of it. I’ve seen all these videos of dudes saying “Practice these scales for [Insert number of] hours, and you’ll get a lot better at guitar.” But it’s like, that’s kinda boring, isn’t it? Practicing the same sequence of notes over and over, for hours. I’d rather spend that time makin’ riffs and stuff, being creative. You can practice scales all you want, but you can’t make a chorus effect guitar swell as ethereal sounding as I can. The only thing I know for real is, if the notes sound good in sequence, it’s good. If separate guitar parts blend together so well you’ll literally ascend, it’s really good.
@lebronjames8544
@lebronjames8544 10 ай бұрын
@@Zorro7269 you don’t just practice the “same sequence” for hours and hours. There’s lots of different scales and all those scales have different shapes. You can work the scales up and down the fretboard too and not just in one spot. You can try to get good being self taught without knowing any scales or theory but you WILL hit a ceiling. This channel has videos for people that think they can get good by just teaching themselves and not learning any theory, chords, or scales. “You can practice scales all you want but you can’t make a chorus effect guitar swell(?) as ethereal sounding as I can” lmao ok dude.
@Zorro7269
@Zorro7269 10 ай бұрын
@@lebronjames8544 No need to be condescending, asshole. You don’t even know what a guitar swell is? That’s… Odd, given the current topic of conversation, that being needing to learn things in order to become a “Better” musician. When will I supposedly hit this ceiling you speak of, because there doesn’t seem to be one. I don’t need to know scales or theory to create riffs, I go off what I think sounds best in sequence and 99% of the time, it works. Wouldn’t ya’ say that’s more impressive than creating riffs based off of some stupid set sequence of notes? Because I would. You undersell people who are self taught. Kurt Cobain was self taught and he ended up creating one of the most recognized and successful bands ever by just using a sequence of simple power chords, no fancy scales and he knew no theory either. None of the members of Radiohead aside from Johny Greenwood know a fuckin’ thing about music theory, and they’ve created some of the most critically acclaimed albums ever like OK Computer, Kid A and In Rainbows. Dave Grohl doesn’t know music theory, and he’s the main guy that creates song parts for the Foo Fighters, yet he still created amazing albums and songs such as Bridge Burning from Wasting Light. Again, you undersell self taught musicians. Besides, who cares if there’s a ceiling, sometimes simplicity can be more complex than complexity. Just a few simple notes can speak more words than a bunch of notes all within a certain scale.

But half of the notes sound sharp or flat - I know it's deliberate, but that's what puts most people off of jazz: the wild, irregular note and key changes and the sheer spamming of notes in general.

@@hanburgundy4317 It's a really cool conversation! Exactly the same reason why people hate jazz, is the reason why people love jazz. Tension and release, is one of the fundamental pillars of music composition, and jazz is a masterful genre for the development of that very concept (classical music too! Of course). It really only sounds out of place to an ear that's not familiarized with the lexicon, and/or the functionality of each musical component (harmony, melody, scales, voice leading, counterpoint, chromaticism, chord tones, extensions, etc, etc.). 😁🙌🏼

I'm looking to help 90 guitar players improvise anywhere on the neck in any key over the next 12-24 months. Enrollment will CLOSE ON MARCH 31. Time is ticking. Once the program is closed again it will remain closed for another few months. You could use that time to advance as a player or continue fookin around. The sentiment of not learning anything new is really a plague in the music world. I've had to quit bands when a guitarist said.. "yeah I'm over 30 now so I'm pretty much done learning.. The “I learned it sixty years ago and haven’t learned anything new since” is so sad but true. I can’t learn enough and certain people (ahem, mainly certain generations), know a handful of chords and some tired old scales and don’t want to learn anything else yet they sit back and trash talk others that are light years ahead of them because hiding behind a keyboard is easier than practicing.
