That “scrapey” sound is how all metal producers tell the bands to play chugs in the studio, it makes the attack more punchy

It is if you can control it. What he’s trying to say is that it’s harder for beginners or someone that’s self taught and maybe doesn’t have their style or skill set down. Guitar is weird because almost everyone has a bad habit or something they do that’s technically wrong… but that’s also something that can make you different and set you apart. I mean Jimi Hendrix playing a left handed guitar right handed?! Just try holding your guitar that way and try playing anything… weird right? But that’s also the only way he can play. I could be wrong, but seriously doubt he could play right handed guitar. But learning the fundamentals in the beginning definitely helps with correcting bad habits. I always drop the pick (1 year playing) and I hold the pick the first way… trying to use the second way in the video but I always default back to the first way for some reason?? Driving me nutz

I never considered how much the pick is showing when I encountered picking problems and assumed it was due to the type of movement I used. When I used the minimum area possible it felt way comfier and I somehow got more speed with it. I also use the first method but with the minimum area showing. Found it more comfortable than the second method. Thank you!

As you grow in your guitar journey you'll learn that there are many many different ways to hold your pick and none of them are "wrong". I, for example, used a penny for many years. Now i mostly use my fingers, but when i do use a pick i use the rounded back of the pick. Ive learned to do this without the "scrapy" but ive also learned ways of using the scrapy sound to good utility. The scrape can be very useful in chuggy metal sounds for instance. It also helps add pick harmonics to the tone of otherwise regularly picked notes. The amount of charm you can add to your tone simply by developing different approaches to picking opens a whole new toolbox to explore.

I used to do the first way, played like that for about 20 years. I discovered the second method a year ago and I’ve never looked back… i don’t know how I went this long without discovering that way but when I did it’s like I was able to finally play like I’ve been playing for as long as I have. Something about the first method just held me back I guess. I also can attribute it all to finally broadening my scope of styles, and really learning how to play. Not just looking at tabs and doing a horrible job of covering songs I liked

Thumb, index and middle fingers. Maximum control. Maximum tone options. You can loosen up and let it get floppy without losing it. You can tighten grip and it gets rigid. Use a big pick, like those one inch triangular monsters (I don't know how you kids use those tear-drop shaped, finger-nail sized little picks) and you can squeeze the thumb between the two fingers and bend the pick making it super rigid. These all create different attacks and either damp or accentuate harmonics. Also for tapping, you can just pull off your index finger and tap while the thumb and middle hold the pick. FURTHERMORE you can also PICK harmonics quickly by pulling the index off the pick and damping the node with the index (instead of tapping it) while the thumb and middle pick the string. Through changing pick attack and moving where you hit the string you can create a mild slow phase-shifter sound USING YOUR HANDS. That's right, I'm pulling out the "tone is in the hands" arguement. You CAN get different tones by HOW and WHERE you attack. BTW while I am ranting, those volume and tone knobs don't always need to be always set to 10.

As a metal player, correct, it's faster, and often in metal that scraping noise is actually desired in the tonality, and can add to the aggression, it can also be a detriment at times, so when I need it to be cleaner sounding, I can change to a different grip. That said clearly from the above I'm in the camp of usually holding it the second method.
