This was an excellent performance. At the time LeAnn was just 17! She was still being pulled in many directions and figuring out who she was as a young woman, a person, and an artist. Of course she is lip synching here. She is not a known dancer, and did very well. Her team wanted her focus to be on the moves. She was hosting this year and also sang somewhere over the Rainbow to close the show. She was excellent at every aspect of this performance. Fire can be very dangerous to work with and LeAnn did great. At this time remember, Shania was also breaking through as a HUGE artist, changing country music for the rest of its path. LeAnn was, is, and will always be one of country's finest with the most gracious heart. Just like Tanya Tucker did many years ago starting out as a child star, they had to figure out who they were in front of the world, and every camera. This brings her to who she is today, a very gracious and humble soul.

I didn't know Leann had done such production number where she danced like her pop peers Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Jessica Simpson! I always thought Leann is older than the three but I was wrong. She came in first at a very young age but she is just as old as the other three Pop stars.

This a lil Vegas for me but well done just the same. I love this song so Leann could sing this in a bathrobe while eating potato chips and she would still bring it. I'm a choreographer and the staging is impeccable. The male dancers superb and Leann who isn't really a dancer moves well and is framed by the dancers in just the right ways.

Every record label wanted their artist to be like Britney Spears in 2000. & it wasn't even about Britney Spears at that point in 2000 anymore, that had just become the trend to have back up dancers and wear crop tops. But make no mistake, it was started from the Britney Spears train after she debuted in 1998, and every label was releasing teen blonde singers by 1999 (Christina, Jessica, Mandy etc) to try to recreate her success. Rimes is an interesting exception though because she blew up a year or two before Britney with a pop cross over song "How do I live" written by Dianne Warren. Her pop cross over was a bit unexpected as she previously had been hailed as the young new country star that was going to preserve the old country western sound. "Cant Fight the Moonlight" was written by Dianne Warren as well who had helped LeAnn cross over into Pop music a few years before so its not surprising Rimes chose to collab with Dianne again. The outfit and dancers was more of a sign of the times than a Britney immitation. No one really categorized Rimes and Spears together for anything. The public saw them pretty differently I think. I do wish labels didn't try to force the dancing on artists who aren't natural dancers (they did it to Jessica Simpson and Mandy Moore as well) , although LeAnn does look like she rehearsed well. Considering how amazing Rimes lives vocals are, it really is amazing that the record label prioritized the dancing (with inevitable lip syncing). The country music awards show audience watching this performance though.. I would love to know what was going on in their heads.

Singers are often pressured into creating an entire dance performance just to get attention. This trend (not exactly a new thing) has diminished the appreciation of a singer's vocal talent. This performance has a troupe of male dancers, which does not add much to the song. The counter argument is that some talented people have so much to offer. I look at all the great singers of the past 40 years and very few (if any) had to hit us with a sexy dance to get our attention.

I used to hate this stuff. Jewel and Nelly Furtado did the same thing. I called it "selling out." Now, maybe I've gotten older and wiser, but it doesn't bother me anymore. It's the nature of the business and I understand that compeltely. If artists like LeeAnn Rimes don't at least make the attempt to be sexy, they're instantly forgotten as one hit wonders. I remember an early interview with Jessica Simpson on Muchmusic, where she pointed out that her first single wasn't a big hit like some of her future songs, largely because it was a ballad and she didn't show her stomach and shake her ass around in the music video. It's the nature of the business. It's very misogynist. If you're a guy, you can get away with having a great voice, being a great musician, writing great songs and wearing a suit and tie. But if you're a young, female artist, especially in pop, R&B or hip hop, you'd better be selling your goodies, or nobody's playing your song on the radio. Not a whole lot has changed in that respect. I like to keep my adult viewing and my music separate, but as long as there's consent rather than coercion, particularly of minors, I'm okay with it. But given what we know now about the entertaining industry as a whole, it's full of perverts who use underage kids as their toys in disgusting ways. I thought this was hot at the time, but I'm basically within a year in age with Ms. Rimes. I'm 39 now, so it would be a little weird and with life experience, I can only imagine what this lady went through around this time with guys in suits pushing her to do things she probably wasn't entirely comfortable with.
