Degtyarev was a genius of mechanics and technology. At the factory, the lugs were adjusted using a file and a smoker: they looked at the sooty surface to see where to file. And the worn short lug was riveted and stretched with a hammer, the lug is shortened there while the receiver does not stretch. Everything is straight and perpendicular, accessible even to Pakistani craftsmen. Maybe even this is described in the armorer's manual.

After the war in Chechnya, most of Degtyarev's machine guns were put out of action. During shooting, the barrel overheated, the chamber became larger, the cartridge case fell through and the firing pin only left a mark on the primer, but there was no shot. Argentina for example sleep well at night with a meagre budget of 3.7 thousand million dollar. The United States use their military power to dictate their policy over other countries. 6:05 - that drum actually looks pretty sweet! Belt feeding removes all the spring issues and the winding. IDK how to reload it manually, but I like the concept, as it keeps the COG centered. Ammo cases on the side might be fine with mounted guns, but they´re sh1t if you have to hold it. And carrying loose belts is a Hollywood thing. Looks dope, but it´s horrible to actually keep them on your body when running, crawling or anything odd you might wanna do on a mission. The downsides might be that the end of the belt is not accessible until it runs out, if you want to connect another one, and it takes a bit longer to reload a mag when you have to wiggle the belt out of the carrier manually to feed the first round. The non-disintegrating belts might also cause problems snagging on anything on or around you. They might be easier to reload though - but at that point, you´ve got enough time anyways, so first things first. Another plus, though - you´ve got a machine gun with adeauate ammo for patrols, and if you need base defense, the same gun mounted on a tripod, could feed from an even larger ammo case for sustained fire capability. This gun is actually awesome!

A quick change barrel was sacrificed for light weight. Soldiers needed to reduce fire rates to prevent heat damage. But more ammunition could be carried. Some small LMGs have been built with quick change barrels since then. Potentially, 2 guns could be carried in a squad to sustain greater fire. An AK-47 type LMG using box magazines replaced the RPD which shared AK parts and could still sustain similar firepower. The AK-47 was developed as a powerful submachine gun. Western AR's where generally developed as rifles. As rifles, Western AR's had accuracy as a priority. The AK-47 was designed for rapid target acquisition and rapid fire over long range accuracy. Soviet squads had a marksmans, DMR, rifle for accurate fire support. AFV's could deliver infantry close to attack positions.

Now Brandon, there's atleast one woman who watches your channel. I married her 17 years ago, and she's how I found your channel. And we are both subbed to it. She ran across your 1858 Remington video, when we inherited my great, great uncle Bat's bird's head grip Peacemaker, and an 1858 passed down on dad's side, since 1871. My grandfather's aunt was Fred Masterson's daughter. While William Barclay Masterson was living in NYC, and working as a sports writer for one of the papera, in 1918, he stopped to visit with the family, on his way to a baseball game in GA. Along with his Colt, there's a picture dated 19 April, 1918, eith him holding my 2 year old grandfather, on his lap. Sadly, that Colt is one 9f uis "bar guns ". He'd buy one at a pawn shop, carve notches into the grip, and offer them for sale, for drinking money. This was one of his last ones, purchased late 1919, a few months before he passed. It then went to his neice in Shinglehouse PA, to her daughter, then to my grandfather, my dad, then me. It is already listed in the will, to go to our daughter and son in law, upon our passing. Only way it leaves the family, is going to a museum, for others to see. Along with the picture, his last handgun license, as the Sullivan Act was, and still is, in effect, and his travel log and diary. So yes. There's at least one woman who watches your channel, in my family, and I'd bet on 2. Our daughter owns an AL Guy AK, from when you were still in NC.

The handguard (and maybe the grip) of the RPD can be seen in Fallout 3's "Chinese Assault Rifle" The stock is also similarly shaped, though it's a wireframe in the game and not solid.

By the way, the RPD was not designed by Vasily Degtyarev alone, it was created in collaboration with his son, Vladimir Degtyarev. Although the most famous invention of Degtyarev Jr. is the RPG-7. Yes, everyone knows what an RPG-7 is, but no one will name its creator. In general, the RPD was originally created as a "heavy avtomat". Let me explain, submachine guns were called ordinary avtomats, in Soviet reference books it says that a submachine gun is an "avtomat for a pistol cartridge". Well, if Tokarev simply remade his AVT-40 for the Elizarov and Semin cartridge (7.62*39), then the Degtyarevs went the other way: they converted the DP-27 light machine gun into an assault rifle. But then they created a backup version and replaced the disk store with a tape receiver. Well, the resulting machine gun was called RD-44 (Ruchnoy Degtyareva or Handheld Degtyarev), and after it was adopted, it became an RPD.

The SKS was the first rifle I ever shot. Been a huge fan of 7.62x39mm every since. Personally, I prefer an AR-15 chambered for 7.62x39mm. I can only say this, because there has been major improvements to the magazines in the past 2 decades.
@1111Tactical Жыл бұрын
AR-15 and 762x39 is cringe. Needless reliability issues for that caliber, and the aesthetics of an "AR-47" style rifle is always an afront to God. 😅 If you want something a little bit AR and a little bit AK in that caliber just get a Galil Ace Gen 2. You also get the rock solid reliability of AK 762 mags

The exposed piston (basically making it a short stroke piston operation) was an upgrade made by (I assume) other Soviet-bloc users of the RPD. The original Russian RPD had a closed gas system and as a result, was horrifically over-gassed. I have had to machine several new gas adjuster blocks for RPD MGs over the last few years, because they will otherwise beat themselves to death, bend the rear take-down pin, destroy the recoil spring, etc.

That, or modern gun technology hasn’t really evolved that much. And how much different can a machine gun really be from what’s already out there?
@HKBronc8 ай бұрын
@@matthewgabbard6415 Hit the nail on the head there. The M60 was a derivative of the MG42, the M240 was a derivative of the M60, etc etc. And the Germans still use the MG42 in the new MG3, same thing but with some pic rails and chambered in 7.62 NATO. I think your point about Kalashnikov changing everything is interesting, as this gun was replaced with the RPK in the Soviet armed forces. A gun that was considered to be much worse than the RPD in it's role as squad automatic. Perhaps the excitement around this brand new gun, that changed the way we think about firearms design, caused the Soviets to change some things that really shouldn't have been.
@Victoratify Жыл бұрын
Who thought that the PKK is worse than the RPD? The Soviet Army did not think so. On the contrary, they considered that replacing the RPD with the PKK is beneficial.
