No one shouldn’t take payment in “product”. It’s more than that. At the very least, this is what any small influencers should be charging for making advertisements or sponsored videos: Minimum wage (in my area is 14, so we’ll use that) x hours you spent (labor cost, include this in your invoice) Supplies used: any backdrop costs, prop costs, additional products used to go with the content, the food and beverage consumed whilst working (after all, most professional companies that work with film provide their workers with food and bev), etc Then, a standard for profit is %25 percent. So say for instance a small influencer spends ten hours filming and editing a video, has a small lunch, needed to purchase any products to make the video happen, etc Labour cost: $14.00 x 10hrs = $140.00 Supplies cost(est): $20.00 consumables $50.00 props and supplies x25% = $256.50 Basically a Small amount. So if a company that’s sending you product won’t cough up a couple hundred for your time and effort, and insists on you making a video for free, tell them no you charge for your labour and supply cost and a small 25% free on top. Basically; if any one is a small influencer, CHARGE FOR YOUR TIME. Now that a lot of major influencers secrets in the industry are coming out companies are going to be going for the smaller influencers and try and manipulate them into content for free or less money than deserved. Don’t let ‘em bully you.

I have been scammed twice. The first time was by a Fairly popular twitter user selling makeup bundles and luckily I was able to get my money back (from the bank not her) and the second by someone who lives in my small town. I was on their asses about refunding my money..I would have bugged and bugged that company until I was compensated. People can be so messy. Sorry it happened to you! This is why when artists commission their art most of the time they’ll ask for half of the money up front. That way they haven’t lost money on supplies they may have bought specifically for the project or money they’ll have to spend in the future on new supplies that they already owned which they used. This also means they do get some kind of money for their time. I’d suggest that next time, if possible, ask for half of the money up front and see what comes out of that. A trustworthy company shouldn’t be too afraid to do it that way.

Hi, I'm from the UK. We do have a small claims court which will probably cost less if you ever do decide to go down the route. But honestly I think sharing your experience is doing more damage to them than the cost of the paid sponsorship. It's a shame because they looked like pretty good lashes and would probably have gotten a fair bit of revenue from your video. Ps your hair and makeup is amazing! You look glowing today 🖤🖤

Most artists (at least in the music industry/people I work with) will take a deposit (20-50% of the total booking fee) a reasonable time before the event they play. This protects the artists because some events get canceled or fail and they dont make the sales that they projected in budgeting before said event. And if the artist didnt take a deposit beforehand they may never get paid. Why I am mentioning this to you is because, with this deal the artist at least makes some money even if the show gets canceled so they dont take a complete loss. Because had they not taken the deal with the failed event they couldve got paid from another promoter/venue. Im not sure if that is how it works in the beauty industry but it may be something youd want to look into. Also, contracts are really nice for situations like this. It gives you the ability to sue if they dont follow their word. If you have anyone who knows someone in the legal world it is totally worth asking about! I hope you have better luck in the future with your brand deals!💖 love your videos!

I’m from the 🇬🇧 and I’ve never heard of this brand hmmm. Firstly well done on calling them out. Second,y I’m also an artist (I’m a storyteller, performer and facilitator) and this kind of thing happens all the time unfortunately so your comment about you wouldn’t do this to an artist is sadly untrue. You are also asked to do stuff for free because it’s good exposure (to who?) or someone may take pictures ( that you probably can’t use). I found a great way to get companies to pay is to draw up an invoice as soon as you get the agreement sorted. On this you outline your payment terms including how it is to be paid, the instalment thing and most importantly how many days from the date of the invoice it needs to be paid within. It’s standard practice to say 28 or 30 days. Then what you do is add a clause at the bottom of the invoice which states that for every 7 days the invoice is late 10% will be added to the total invoice amount as a late fee. It’s funny how quick the companies pay up when the cost begins going up. And it’s not about wether they book you again, I’ve found if you’re good most do. It’s about setting a precedent for yourself and everyone else in the industry. If they get away with it they will carry on doing it. Finally it may be worth sending an official looking email to say you will be taking it further even if you don’t. Add the original agreement, the invoice and your payment terms to this to show you mean business. Hope some of this helps and you get this resolved xxx

Hey, in MY opinion, you didn't follow up enough! I work for a marketing company and we follow up A LOT. Once a day at least. We fwd the email and then say "HEY DID YOU SEE THE EMAIL BELOW?"
