Same, actually. I got the cheapest version of what I knew would fit me best, and I'm _still_ paying off my flute now! That was a really big financial decision to make (I don't actually recommend this route, unless you really have your financial plans sorted out and stick to it), and seeing how things have progressed in my life, I don't regret it at all. 😊

That flute sounds gorgeous! I learned on a very old inexpensive flute my mom found at a secondhand music store. It was an Arnold brand. I can't find any information about it. It came in a professional case. It had caps on the ends to protect it when it was stored. When I was in 10th grade, it was stolen from my locker. I was heartbroken. My parents went out on a limb to get it for me when they really couldn't afford it. That flute had the most beautiful sound. I wish I still had it 😢 I'm not very big either. 4' 10.5" and very small framed. All my years of playing have taken a toll on my small hands. Both of my little fingers are full of arthritis and misshapen from stretching to reach certain keys. I seldom play anymore but listening to you gives me the urge to pick my flute up again. I'm nearly 64 now. I regret not getting into teaching which is what I had planned on doing. I fell in love, got married and had 3 babies. Somehow my love of playing music got pushed aside. I truly regret that. Having a bad case of celiac disease didn't help much either. It's probably the real reason I stopped studying music. Anyhow, how can I find out about that old Arnold flute?

I don't know if it's allowing the post because I posted and the message evaporated. I found an Arnold flute on E-bay. It was the first hit on Google when I searched Arnold flute.

I want that case! I've had cases "explode" when accidentally dropped and watched all the pieces of a couple of my flutes go plopping onto floors. My nearly 20 year old ProTec's zippers have finally died and I don't like the newer ones, so this Brannen case looks like winner. My search for my professional flute took years. I tried Powell (love the headjoints, not wild about the bodies), Haynes, Tom Lacey, Yamaha (for some reason, I sound mushy on these), Tom Green, and a few others I can't recall, and found that my Altus fit me best. Funny how that works, especially when on paper a lot of these flutes are so similar.

THE HYPE OVER THIS CASE IS REAL! Brannen ACED the design!! I find it really comes down to when you look for a flute for yourself, _that's_ when you figure out that the flute really chooses you. For me, meeting a Brannen flute for the first time when I was a teenager was 100% chance, and I don't take it for granted. I'm so glad you found the flute that chose you! It's so magical when it happens. ^_^

Not sure Brannen design this case... look at this : www.bamcases.com/instruments/vents/flute/4571-etui-flute-hightech-silver-carbone.html It's french made ! :) They made expensive high-end case : about 300€ the case

This case is not by Brannen! The brand is bam cases. I have string player friends who use this case for their violin and violas and they are the best. There was a problem with the case manufacturer they were using before (I think they used cases from Northwind) but a bad batch of velvet ruined many flutes. Now that’s why they use bam cases. Flute world sells them.

Joanna, this was incredibly helpful! I just picked up a Brannen headjoint to upgrade my Yamaha. Recently I have been playing on a vintage custom Haynes, and both flutes require very different embouchure positions. Watching your video was so helpful to understand how to change over my tone. Also, the harmonics help a lot to find the best position! Awesome job :)

My Brannen is 69X. I won't put the last number. I bought it in 1985. On the suggestion by Clifford Tretick, who worked at Brannen, he actually recommended a Protec case before I sent it to him for repair. I said "you mean those cheap cases we sold at the music store where I worked?" He says that they're actually some of the best cases made. I wound up getting the micro-zip case double for flute/piccolo. It's hard, much like the Brannen case, but much cheaper. It actually fits my Brannen very well.

It is a BAM case. I recently bought a new head joint for my Brannen, and my case was falling apart, so when I sent my flute to be fitted with the new head, I bought a new case too. The Brannen person I spoke with told me that they weren't using Northwind cases anymore, they were using BAM cases: Brannen has a contact with them now.

That’s the same for me! I sound amazing on Altus and my sister sounds amazing on Powell! Wow that’s a super high-tech case! My own flute case is made of wood coated with leather and the clasps of my case are like a brown color. Both headjoints are great! The Silver Head I feel like gives you a brighter and resonant sound while the 15/85 Head gives you a warmer and richer sound. 😃❤️🎼🎹

Great review, I also play a Brannen as my main flute- 14k model with silver keys and an original 14k Lafin headjoint. My flute was made in 2006, so I have you beat with the old serial number mine is 5796. That hard case with the locks is super cool, and for the price my flute costs, I think it should have an ultimate case like that. Northwind cases are nice , but for a $30,000 dollar instrument, Brannen should take care of their customers and give us a better option. Dynamite case, and great review! Sending 🎶💜 from the S.F. Bay Area! 🌞

How do we know whether these flutes are professional or intermediate asides from the price and you telling us? Do you think you could make a playlist differentiating the two levels? I hope to get an actual intermediate flute soon and would love to re watch your reviews without wasting hours to find out I was looking at a professional level flute lol 😂 the flute I play on is open hole, b foot, and French pointed key arms but I got it off of ebay and it is unbranded. So now you can see why I said "an actual instrument/flute"
@JustAnotherFlutist7 жыл бұрын
We'll definitely keep this in mind as video we can make in the future! Mostly, the price does kind of tell you if it's an intermediate vs. higher end professional flute. Intermediates tend to be around the $2,000-$4000 range, pre-professionals $5K - $10K, and high end professionals are usually $10K+. It's definitely a huge investment, so I'm glad you're thinking smart about this!

Do you have a flute right now? If not, see if you can rent one to learn first! That way you don't have to commit to an instrument while you're still figuring out the basics. If you've already learned the basics, do some experimenting to see (1) how you _naturally_ want to play (try drawing out on paper what everything feels like in your mouth: how the air moves, placement of tongue, etc), (2) how your current flute likes to be played. Then, figure out if the way you naturally want to play actually matches with how your flute likes to be played. And then compare notes with my videos! 😊 Happy shopping!

Hi Joanna, I really need your help! I've been playing flute for about 3 years and I've made it a habit to play REALLY rolled in because I sounded less airy and I would produce a clear tone, so naturally I would just remain in that position. But my band director has told me that I must roll out in other to be able to project more sound, but every time I roll out, I sound really airy :( I've tried rolling out little by little but I still cant seem to transfer the clear tone that I produce when rolling in, to when I'm rolled out. And now I've noticed that when I try to play slightly rolled out I end up rolling in too much and then I cant play low notes at times and I have to stop and roll out in order to play it (which still sound airy) I don't know if you'll see this, but I hope you do. Please help :( I really love flute and I practice everyday and this rolling in too much is so stressing
@janepembleton-smyth13877 жыл бұрын
AnomalousCoffee Try turning out and relaxing your lips forward for instant improvements. If you see the way Joanne plays - her embouchure is relaxed and her sound is rich. (Turning in makes your lips too tight. If you then turn out, still with tight lips, the air is too high and the sound becomes 'airy') Relax your lips forward whilst turning out and doing Joanne's balloon thing in the mouth for a gorgeous tone.
