Brass bands are an old native British tradition of music, originating from the Victorian era, performed by working people in industrial communities, usually sponsored by their employers and covering popular, folk and classical pieces.There are a number of competitions for best band held annually, especially in the North of England. Standards are incredibly high, even when compared to professional bands or orchestras. Although viewed by some as dated , the tradition has become popular all over Europe .
