I myself had never actually had occasion to hear any of the riot grrl bands and wanted to check them out. it just happened, much to my disappointment, that they do nothing for me, and I said so. it's not a crime.

@Faris.g.karadsheh Sleater Kinney was not a riot grrl band. Neither is Le Tigre. Le Tigre is Hannah's band she started in the 2000's, riot grrl was no longer a thing at that time. Riot Grrrl isn't a genre, it was a loosely organzied feminist movement. Riot Grrl bands are those specifically involved with Riot Grrl. I am VERY familiar with Bikini Kill and they weren't just not good, they were embarrassingly terrible. Their singles were produced enough to be listenable but live, they couldn't play their instruments if you put a gun to their heads. you can't even tell what song they're doing until Kathleen starts singing because the musicians were so out of sync, it sounded like everyone was playing something different. They were the worst band I've ever heard in my life. You can't use unpolished punk ethics as an excuse. "Love Comes In Spurts" live sounded exactly as it did on the record. I've seen L7 live and they were fucking tight.
@moonlily1
@moonlily1 8 ай бұрын
@Faris.g.karadsheh I'm totally on board for what it was about. I like the message, I like the presentation, I only ask that people know how to play their instruments. Not even incredibly well, just passably. I've seen children who can play better than Bikini Kill- literally! The Linda Lindas play their songs better than they ever did. It meant a lot to me too, that's why I was a little deflated when I finally heard it, and the skill level was non existent. Especially since women in music aren't taken seriously, there's no room for incompetence.
@moonlily1
@moonlily1 8 ай бұрын
@Faris.g.karadsheh Riot Grrl would have had a broader influence if they'd had better quality music and weren't intentionally exclusionary, but at least they inspired others to carry the torch.

@@robertsmithfan877 Forgive 10 years ago me. I dont even know what the context to this is or if I was even being sarcastic or not lol. I will retract the fashion aspect of the statement but I still believe to be a "goth" and even a "punk" you have to be in the scene some how. Whether you only just listen to the music and are some what informed about the history or you're complete active in the scene. Repping the scene with out knowing what the scene is poser-ish (for lack of better term). Fashion comes second but not mandatory.

Actually, you can. If you have some orthodox concept of what goth is and you adhere to it and condemn people who don't, then you are conformist. I'm not saying you are, and I'm also not saying this is necessarily entirely bad, but, by sheer definition, you can be goth AND conformist. Just as I don't think 'mainstream gay' is a contradiction...though it is awfully sad...
@moonlily1
@moonlily1 15 жыл бұрын
I'd like them better with a different singer, probably. no, it's not new, it sounds very 1977, except most of the 'amateurish' punk bands were better than this.

appealing to some, not so much to others. why are people so self righteous about this stuff, like everyone who doesn't like the same music they do is a moron? i don't give a rat's ass if you like the velvet underground or not. I appreciate that they had the guts to get out there and make themselves heard, but they are just not great musicians in my opinion and I don't enjoy listening to a weak and untuneful voice. but good for you if you dig them.
