Just a quick note - While the game isn't "pausable" during the initial setup, the game time doesn't actually progress, even if your villagers dawdle about. There is no rush to place your starting town.

Very good to know. That would have been a bizarre design decision otherwise.

A large number of small farm plots with a mixture of crops isn't 'gamey,' it's actually historically accurate. Subsistence farmers knew that crop diseases were a thing a would do just that, hoping that at least some of the crop would survive, even if doing so was less 'efficient' than having one big field of a single crop. To peasants and settlers, "optimizing" wasn't about maximizing gains but minimizing risk.
@robertnett97937 ай бұрын
Good observation. That and also many farmers didn't have very large plots of land - at least in Germany. There were lots and lots of small curvy plots dotted around until the I do believe 'Flurbereinigung' - about 'land-cleanup' where fields were swapped so one farmer had all their fields in one big chunk. Question would be if this has been intentional from the beginning to indeed reduce spread of blights or if it just was a positive by-product from having rather small properties...

@@robertnett9793 in north america the three sisters was a common method. corn, squash, and peas. they limit the amount of damage they crops do to the soil and gave three high product crops. the Mexicans have the same thing but they call it something else. we came to find out that peas add nitrogen to the solid, corn pulls nitrogen and squash kills weeds.
@robertnett97937 ай бұрын
@@nicholas-cs7vr Ah. I didn't know it's called 'The Three Sisters' in English :D In German it's simple 'Drei-Felder-Wirtschaft' - about 'three field (crop) farming' - we are efficient and boring that way :D But I do believe many farming communities developed similiar systems - for exactly the reasons you explained. Especially considering that artificial nitrogen fertilizer wasn't arount until the early 20th century.

Lots of small farms isn’t gamey. Well, it might be but it’s also quite accurate for the time period. Prior to mechanisation - or indeed proper crop rotation - farming was conducted using many small plots, often devoted to different crops, as you not only had to oxen/hand plow the area (an awful, back-breaking task) but also had to weed it. Then there was the whole manorial economy where the major landowner required everyone to work their fields, then the peasants / workers worked their own private plots in their own time for food. Which is why the ‘manor’ would make a profit, even if individuals did not.

I really love the idea of having curved roads and a bit of a more natural look. One thing I think could be improved on is the ranges of several services - like the market or tavern and stuff. Because I feel, the game wants you to build a certain, very predictable way, if you want to have the max benefit. So things like having isolated homesteads with just nice looking scenery and decorative stuff in between ends up being worse than a rather ugly grid pattern... Maybe an approach like City Skylines does (where just the direct happines impact is limited, but services reach over the whole map for example) or some 'This tavern can support X people and just applies to the X closest homes, or increasing the range of your market with haulers... basically anything that would allow you to go nuts with aesthetics without sacrificing ingame bonuses would be highly appreciated...
@henryglennon38647 ай бұрын
Mostly agree. I really like this game, and have a couple hundred hours in it, BUT once you understand how to optimize desireability bonuses, you kind of get strongly nudged into very formal designs. For example, you can build only ONE temple, so for maximum efficacy, it HAS to be at the dead center of your residential area, and your market HAS to be at the dead center of a cluster of houses in order to maximize the number of houses supported. That, and I wish there was some sort of seaport/trade route locus that implicitly connected your town to a wider world that you have to build around, or respond to.

Something you can do with the lumber is placing decorative trees and harvesting them! 5 gold each, 1 tree per tile. Once matured they are extremely fruitful. It's like planting your own forest for timber.

One thing that I like about this game's aesthetic is that, since it was developed by the same team behind Grim Dawn, the buildings almost look like they could have come from Grim Dawn pre-apocalypse. I think a few of the assets might have even been recycled from Grim Dawn assets.

I slaughtered my cows 🐄 😑 after I didn't know how to take care of them at first. Chickens breeding goes wild. I put my barracks by my trading post and gold storage. Worked better. They kill off the raiders. I transfer gold to vault next door in case they try and steal it. Round about thinking, but I caught on.
