Why is it so hard to get adults to agree or solve complicated problems together? Why do humans cry? Where did we come from and what makes us so #unstoppable?
Link to the full video here: • BRAVE YOUNG MINDS | Q&...
In this conversation, organized by the Brave New World Conference, Yuval Noah Harari sits down with children, ages 10 and up, to address these questions and more. The event was held on September 18 in Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, Netherlands.

This is a good way to engage young minds, to air their curiosity and ask questions that interest them most. The better part of the question and answer forum is the participation of a learned resource speaker in the person of Prof. Harari whose knowledge on world history and appreciation on the capability of modern technologies such as computer-based artificial intelligence to know and influence human beings upon their persons as well as on their social, economic, political affairs and belief systems, which at it was enjoyed by the young and brave minds participants allowed them exercise more power of their intellectual faculties! I remember our national hero in my homeland Philippines, Dr. Jose Rizal, who truly understood the power of the youth when he declared them: "The Hope of the nation." Thank you and more power to the participating youth and unstoppable brave minds!

There is so much of value in this. I hope people will watch Prof. Harari’s talk on consciousness which provides the conceptual basis of his approach to humanity and our modern problem solving capacity. I cannot help but notice a missed opportunity in this QandA. When talking about money I would have liked to see some mention that it isn’t just a story, it’s also a representation of an agreement. At its root the story is that we need to account for contribution and subtraction of resources. Now that we have the technology to greatly reduce the amount of physical labour required to survive we can have different agreements. We can learn and teach and work in ways very different to how we have in the past. We may not need to actually have this fine grained accounting. Many countries are looking at a universal basic income. At its best a system like this would provide everyone with enough to meet basic needs. Then work becomes something driven by interest, skill and the need for belonging. Those are very different motivators to survival. One thing I’d say to the architects of tomorrow is please consider that those of us who aren’t motivated by competition may languish if we are not asked to contribute. So please help us devise ways to avoid the stagnation of choice paralysis. We can do so much more for each other if the technological tools we use to learn and work engage our minds by always providing a clear next step.

This was the most refreshing and best of the interviews of Pro. Harari. its excellence is about the way the moderator formulates the issues and rephrases what she hears, it actually brings the best version and portrayal of Prof Harari,. I Love that she also pays equal attention on questions of children and praises them, she is actually interacting as a human being in her real self to engage with others no matter of status and age. She does not see it as she has a job to do and give all the praises to the Prof at the costs of the audience being ignored. Whereas in all other interviews of Prof Harari, I have seen the more " mature" adult moderators, despite showing superficial respect for the prof, most aim to lure him to a wresting circle, deemed to bring him down as "who are you as a historian to predict future and you are the most intelligent pessimist, etc" but again what a delight to see the young are not that ignorant or judgemental and focus on his true message, less prevent disasters, lets be kinder humans to one another and to our plant.

Wonderful and really eye opening analyses by Prof Harari about the human situation.Human cooperation, he rightly emphasises, is central to what humanity is or is not oday, and what it can be in the future. History of the human species he suggests should be mandatory for all the children of the world. Teaching the history of our own group nation religion only is at the very root of most problems humanity faces today.

@@therealtulipI suspect what is being reflected here is differences in thinking about consciousness itself. Tolle has appeal with people who are happy to entertain a spiritualist perspective in regard to consciousness. On the other hand Prof. Harari asks us to be critical thinkers about the spiritualism we may have inherited. I’d be even more confronting on this issue. While I used to be able to embrace spiritualism on the basis of my feelings I have now seen ‘the emperor’s new clothes’ so to speak. I look at most organised religion and spiritual traditions as attempts to organise and control human behaviour. ie that they were an appropriate solution for their time perhaps but have an awful way of turning into power dynamics. We give some people huge amounts of opaque power and then are surprised to find that opportunists have worked their way into those systems. Looking into this with any kind of rigour quickly reveals sociopathic horrors which were allowed to flourish because of the lack of transparency. If what I’m saying so far isn’t making much sense it’s probably worth watching Professor Harari’s talk on consciousness.

Is it possible that humanity would move past the point of no return, and not even know it? The moment when the scale tips would not be obvious it would just be a tiny gradient in an entire strata of events. And meanwhile we'll still be thinking that we have time. Staring into our screens, and looking out our windows, thinking everything looks OK. Living in intellection, discussion and data collection.

I hope the following helps improve the reasoning that starts at 26:50 Cooperation is a human strength, not the human strength. Cooperation can be a bad choice too, it is unreasonable in a liferaft with supriments for one, or with a canibal stranger hunting for dinner. In circumstances like those, competitive strategies can work better. The most successfull in nature, regardless their sex, is neither the one who cooperates best, an "extreme comunist", nor the one who competes best, an "extreme capitalist". The two extremes are wrong, as is so often the case when reality is reduced to a false dychotomy. The most successfull in nature is the best in identifying the circumstances (type of game), deciding if it is best to compete or cooperate, and then acting accordingly (oversimplified for simplicity, but already better than the false dychotomy - and easy enough for kids). Orcas and whales provide a good example of different strategies for different games. When food is scarce, orcas hunt whales, predator and prey, no cooperation is possible. Then, when fish is abundant, orcas and whales cooperate. Why? Because they get more fish working as a team! Clearly, orcas and whales recognize that both have to adjust their strategies according to the circumstances (type of game) to maximize their results. We should be able to learn a thing or two from them...

I like Harari very much and most of the time I agree with him, but in times like in the minute 41:00 of the video he starts talking like economy "is just a story" , not a science, ruled by logic. This may lead to dangerous stories, like the myth that central planning of the economy, also known as socialism, may result in something good.

The question about male dominance in so many human societies I would have to say my theory is that it's because of child rearing in the cultures depends on primarily women raising the children rearing you know the whole pregnancy issue where the woman can be kind of out of commission for period of time creates a tendency to believe that the male worker and the way a male leader in the whatnot is more dependable they're not drawn away from their duties for a child rearing purposes as a woman is expected to be devoted to their children.

How to make Christ real to his devotees? In the ceremony of the Mass, the priest takes a piece of bread and glass of wine, and proclaims that the bread is Christ's flesh, the wine is Christ's blood, and by eating and drinking them the faitful attain communion with Christ. What could be more real than actually tasting Christ in your mouth? Traditionally, the priest made these bold proclamations in Latin, the ancient language of religion, law and the secrets of life. In front of the amazed eyes of the assembled peasants the priest held high a piece of bread and exclaimed "Hoc est corpus!" -(This is the body!)- and the bread supposedly became the flesh of Christ. In the minds of illiterate peasants, who did not speak Latin, "Hoc est corpus!" got garbled into "Hocus pocus!" and thus was born the poweful spell that can transform a frog into a prince, and a pumpkin into a carriage. Yuval Noah Harari (21 Lessons for the 21st Century, Penguin Random House UK, Vintage, 2018, page; 329)

Yuval speaks a lot of sense until he mentions his HUSBAND. Then for some reason I get a headache and feel a bit embarrassed for the audience and here I'm pretty sure it must have been confusing for the children attending. I would prefer if he said his "spouse" adding the word "he" further down the sentence if he wanted to make clear that he was in fact married to a man, although that makes me question exactly what I understand by the word 'marriage'. It seems to detract from what he's saying at least to me.

You are such a contradiction. You believe in evolution, and that would imply the survival of the fittest, but you also think cooperation is how leaders rise to power. In the real world it is the strong that rise to power…maybe not physical strength…but they are not mentally weak and they do not cooperate fully….most leaders are very disagreeable. Women tend to be very agreeable. That is ONE reason why there are more men in powerful positions rather than women. There are many other things in your views that are so contradictory it’s really hard to listen to you.

@@razonyespiritu we are not animals and your idol is wanting to reduce men and women to animals and insects. No justice, no choice nor free will. Let's bring back slavery heh! Let's own nothing. Let's get harvested at their whims for organ donations. let's be communist like china. This is going backwards where they want to pervert/word salad you, manipulate you, psychological perversion of good things, progress to have us to be tagged like cattle and no rights. WAKE UP.

@@tatianacomeau7244 my idol? i dont even like him. i dont need your advices thank you, i know all about the nwo,and years before the plandemia. and you can not say humans are not an animal species, thats not objective and rational, anyway,2 humans can be very very different in culture/mentality/consciousness. we can not generalize. but i dont believe in evolution,by random. there are very powerful and superior beings behind the creation of humanity

@@razonyespiritu I believe God created man in his image. Yes I can say men and women are not to be defined as animals. I know where the deceivers, liars, manipulators want to take this further. Just like all psychological twisting of truths, using the cover of "virtue" has been done to us thus far, to degrade us, destroy us. We have fallen from grace and have been manipulated. Just look back each generation. They have degraded us through movies, shows, music, education and so on. We have been under attack always but did not realize it. JFK and J. Edgar Hoover said it best.

@@tatianacomeau7244 what it matters are the moral values, ideals, which come from a universal consciousness. religious beliefs are relative, and not the most important thing. anyway, for sure good and evil exist, and we are in a battle field down here, for our souls, that must ascend to a higher dimension, realm,at the end.

It’s so sad to hear Yuval telling these young minds, we are just “animals”. That is the first lie.

What's wrong with being described as an animal if you don't mind me asking? Once humanity thought the Earth was at the centre of the solar system then Copernicus showed that it wasn't. If some day someone shows that we are not at the centre of creation would that be such a terrible thing? Perhaps you think too poorly of animals?

Following on from my comment from a few days ago Teresa I did find his use of "husband" to describe his spouse in front of these young people as possibly confusing. Perhaps I'm just being homophobic without consciously realizing it.
