As Brazil Carnival fans know, the Bateria ( or Drums Section ) of a Samba School is naturally lead by their Samba Master, known in Portuguese as “Mestre”. But he also has the help of the Carnival Queen, called “Rainha de Bateria” or Carnival Queen who´s function as you will see on the video is to present both the Drumming Master and the percussionists.

The samba drumming section is the heart of the Samba, and without it, there is no show or parade. Everything revolves around the samba drumming section, which sometimes has up to 450 percussionists, but as an average of 300 -350 Brazilian Samba percussionists.
For the first time, we are seeing Larissa Nicolau being the carnival queen for “Academicos de Santa Cruz Samba School” , whose colors are green and white. Important to note she was the official Brazilian Carnival Princess for many years before becoming a full Brazil Carnival Queen. Congratulations Larissa!

Thanks! We are planning to post a video a day thru the 2017 Brazil Carnival season...let´s see if we are able to make this. This Queen by the way has an interesting story: her parents are part of the board of the samba school and she learned to samba dance since she was a kid. For two last years shewas the official Princess ( some schools have that too) and for the first time, she is a full Queen, the hardest post to achieve at a samba school...Great performance for a first time!

Very good question. They have been changing since before it was too disorganized and too many samba-schools. In a very short summary there is : The Elite Group ( six samba schools parades Sunday and 6 Monday) . Then there is what is called "Group A", that has 14 Samba Schools,: 7 of them parade friday and 7 parade Saturday at Rio´s Sambadrome, where this footage was made. Finally, there is Group B, with 13 schools that present themselves on another location.
