The background to this lay in 1966. Brazil had been hacked to bits in their group by Bulgaria, Hungary and Portugal and went out early. The next time they came to Europe they expected the same. So from their first game Brazil played a very unlike Brazil game, not just this one - this match was a second tier group game. Holland for their part did not play like this until this game. Prior to this match Holland knew what was in store from Perria (sorry about the spelling of the centre half) and co. And after this game Holland reverted to their normal game.
@realeyesrealizereallies11766 жыл бұрын

I agree with inner opinion - Van Hanegem, Gerson, Overath and Puskas were as accurate but REVELATION's left foot was the most powerful I've seen - check out his goal v Zaire in '74 - WALLOP. Also, he was tactically flexible and bright 'upstairs'. In the heat and altitude of Mexico, Brazil hit on the required combination with their 4-2&½-3&½ system in which Rivelino played a working attacking game from the left wing and provided the two halves.

In addition, Holland played the entire tournament with their 3-rd choice goalkeeper and the absence of the two original center backs (one due to injury), and a half fit Rensenbrink (in the final), as he was injured in the game against Brazil. That's how it was then, even worse in the amateur leagues, referees were awful and if you a bit useful you would be taken out of the game. Leeds United were noted for being able to give more than they would take, they had Hunter, Lorimer, Clarke, Madely and a few other tough nuts who you wouldn't cross without payback. All top teams had to have that ability to get in and fight. The terraces (fans stood to watch games in the main) reflected what went on on the pitch. The whole thing of playing and watching was rougher and tougher. It wasn't the family game it is today. Today's football is more athletic, more sanitised, 50 replays of every incident makes it over analysed for me it's not as exciting as watching 2 teams really fight it out. Today's footballers would do well but they would be shocked at the state of the playing surfaces and the tough tackles that were allowed.

You are laughing, but Rensenbrink got injured and only played the first 45 minutes against Germany. A lenient referee from East Germany was a strategy

Holland was more violent this game. The referee whitout any shame, stole Brazil. Brazil couldn´t anyway go to final according superior instructions.

MMA on a football pitch. Most Dutch players of that team came from Amsterdam or Rotterdam. Big cities. They didn't let themselves to be fooled around. Street life on the pitch.

This match was at least a battle to go for gold later. Both teams wanted to fight for it! Not some fake diving cheating pussies U see nowadays (f.e. Spain or Portugal)

Today football players are more like artist, maybe too sensitive but talented (Spain, Portugal, France...); obviously you miss that bad motherfucker style butchery, and that is the reason why your dirty country will never ever win a championship...

Luís Pereira, who got sent off, is one of the best defenders of all time. 562 games with Palmeiras and 171 games with Atlético Madrid. Brazil v Holland 1974 is an insane match, though. Holland started it, they always started it, that's why the lost the Final against Germany. Half of the players went out to hurt the Germans in the second half, while the others tried to play their classy game. The Dutch weren't "laid back" then, they were a tough-tackling outfit. Holland v Germany 1980 Euro semi-final is also insane, after that the Dutch game declined until Gullit and van Basten came along. Pereira has said, "it's long since forgotten between Neeskens and I, completely forgotten."
