I always found the world of Brazil to be a take on the absurd inefficiency of the actual dictatorships in the real world, and how they contrast the absurd efficiency of fictional dystopias, like 1984. The state isn't malicious, per se, but no-one in it is willing to take tiniest personal responsibility out of fear for punishment, so they distribute the responsibility as far and wide as possible, until no-one has any idea of how their personal output contributes to the greater whole. The torture and execution of dissidents is a direct result of this; since no-one is willing, or at this point even capable of coming out to admit their errors, the only possible course is to explain all the destruction that ensues from their mistakes on malicious outsiders, terrorists. And since the imaginary terrorists are ofcourse impossible to catch, the entire state falls into a state of paranoia and is willing to do anything to protect itself from these assumed threats. The personal responsibility of state officials has become so non-existent that they no longer comprehend that they're condemning innocent people to torture and death for their own mistakes, they really think that they are fighting a seemingly unstoppable threat from within.

Brazil, I believe, was a condemnation of socialism. There were no terrorists. Things blew up because they weren't maintained and failures of this nature was blamed on terrorists. The government, was loaded with bureaucratic nightmares, which is why nothing was fixed. The "terrorist" of the film was a free lance repairman who skipped paperwork. He actually fixed things. Everything was overly complex, everything required a ton of paperwork, and everybody worked for the state, and nobody did their job. The society was a nightmare and if you noticed, Sam's job was utterly pointless. What, exactly, did he actually do? Supposedly, he was in law enforcement, but did he ever capture a criminal? The one criminal actually seen in the film was a free lance repairman, a HIGHLY valued terrorist, which the state can't catch. He was to be captured and tortured, because he was showing the incompetence of the system. That's why Assange is in jail, he exposed the corruption of the media, and the government. He actually did journalism, where our supposed "reliable sources" will not.

Not to dick ride all of you, because it's hard finding intellectual conversations like this in person on a film I like. But you all make a valid point on the movie, I loved it. Your all remind me of Vitor Hugo's old saying "Not being heard is no reason for silence". Good day all.

It's a critique of materialism, capitalism, fascism, nationalism, dysfunctional governments with excessive bureacracy where no one want to take blame for anything, are careless and only out to do things for their own good. By the way, Soviet Union wasn't even socialist (or communist), but was Stalinist. Stalin hid under a few trappings of "socialism" and "communism" while leading a grand state that controlled so much, regardless of the fact that Marx' own idea was that communism had no state at all. If anything, true socialism and/or communism is way more pro-freedom, pro-welfare etc. than conservatism, liberalism and other right wing ideologies.

The ending of this movie consistently has a matrix like effect on me. He is in a fantasy caused by a kind of lobotomy an escape from the dreadful state of reality of dystopia not too dissimilar from that in which many of us live today. The question remains for all to choose, would it be better to live in this dystopia or to surrender to some kind of fantasy world like a video game or other form or replacement reality. Being assertive and remaining engaged and attentive does serve one well and avoids the kind of tragic ending to which our protagonist tacitly submitted himself.

This movie managed to make bills and receipts villainous! The scene where the reclusive handyman (the real Tuttle) gets covered by receipts and vanishes forever, the professional plumbers using the paperwork for repairs to evict Sam without notice, the erroneous accusations all due to a simple misprint. And the attitude of the state that it could never be wrong when something does go wrong.

IMHO Gilliam's masterpiece, along with 12 Monkeys The craziest part is that Brasil (I'm brazillian) is actually pretty much like the film, and was even more similar at the time the movie was made, when the country was getting out of 20 years of military dictatorship. The extreme bureaucracy, the aburd concern with looks (it's the number 1 country in the ranking of plastic surgeries), the huge economic inequality... I read somewhere that it's called Brazil but was meant to represent any of the Latin American dictatorships that existed at the time.

The name of the film has multiple meanings, on the surface its a reference to the song, Sam is dreaming of being whisked from his boring everyday life to an exotic location, but that location is only romantic in the song, the real place isn't. The regime isn't a direct reference to any real government, the actual setting is left vague so its message has universal appeal.

I love the hell out of that movie. Terry Gilliam is my favorite director. I only wish that my DVD had his commentary on it. Terry Gilliam's commentary tracks are the best. My favorite being his commentary for Fear & Loathing. I've seen that movie more often with the commentary than without. But I'm getting off track. Thanks for the video. I need to watch Brazil again. And good luck with the marathon. Look forward to the subsequent video. P.S. - Still miss Basement Jaxx during the opening. :P

This is 1 of the all time greatest films ever made. I love the work Terry Gilliam has done. From his animations in Monty Python's Flying Circus which connected one sketch to the next which made each episode a stream of consciouss. His co-direction on Holy Grail with Terry Jones. Art Director on Life Of Brian, the funniest comedy film ever. Time Bandits, Brazil, The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen, The Fisher King, 12 Monkeys, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, another of my favourite films, Brothers Grimm, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. Terry Gilliam is a visual genius. I love the work of Tim Burton, also a great visual director, who directed Alice in Wonderland, but i would have loved to have seen what Terry Gilliam would have done with directing Alice in Wonderland. I think it was made for him to direct, although i do like Tim Burtons version.b

I always thought this movie was a satirical portrait on the Brazilian government specially the military dictatorship. Watercolor of Brazil is a pretty good song but the movie's similarities with the country are too much to be coincidental.

There is the phrase the glass is half full (optimistic) or it is half empty (pessimistic). Brazil is as half empty a glass movie as one can find (and that includes DeNiro's anarchist plumber Tuttle). A phrase taken from other science fiction sums it up, "resistance is futile". - From the pessimist view of the film, a government burocracy cannot be made which is humane. Most humans are too self centered, too narrow in their thinking to be more than cogs in the 'machine'. And revolution is no answer either since anarchists can't cope with making a complex society work and simply engage in brutality. - There is only one way out in Brazil, escapism from the reality. While that can seem like childish fantasy, it is what is left when facing the cruelty in life as depicted in this excellent glass half empty film. So, the mental escape in Brazil is not childish at all. Childish escapism would be a standard movie savior who ushers in victory or the sugary they lived happily ever after. Brazil gives up on that path in reality because it cannot happen.

I always saw this film as not so much a criticism of government as a criticism of us. There is no talk about leaders or politicians causing the horrors; its the banality of evil. Thousands of cogs in a machine designed to destroy with each and every one refusing to take responsibility for their part.
