Amazing collection! Growing up in Brazil through the 70's, 80's I regret not having given the proper attention to these musicians till I was in my late 20's. I know most of those you reference here, but am discovering some of these albums I hadn't heard of before. A couple comments on your points: at 9:00 Elis Regina, one of the greatest singers of all times, is a double first name. No one would ever call her Regina. Either use Elis Regina or Elis. at 27:00 Paulo Moura was primarily a clarinet player. He occasionally played tenor, not soprano sax.

Didn't know airto was on bitches brew. I had been listening to jazz in general back long ago. But i had no idea what i was listening to years ago! I was listening, but i wasn't hearing the sounds and players on all these recordings. At 54, I've learned more to appreciate these awesome artists, they've got all my love today!!!!!!!

Danny thanks for introducing us to Soul Kress! Soul, thanks for sharing your knowledge, fantastic recommendations! I lived in Brazil as a kid, my father was a record collector of both Jazz and Brazilian music, so I grew up to a lot of those tunes. I also later came (back) to them via CTI records so I would obviously like to mention the Brazilian composer and pianist/keyboards Eumir Deodato in the jazz-fusion genre, his album Prelude (1972) is a fine exemple, Airto Moreira plays alongside. Laurindo Almeida was a wonderful guitar player with a prolific career, he also crossed over into bossa nova like many other Brazilian prominent musicians (Luis Bonfá, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao Gilberto, Oscar Castro-Neves), check his collaboration with Stan Getz on Verve (1963), or in a different style his later recording Moonlight Serenade (1981) with Ray Brown on Jeton, the German audiophile label. The pianist Sergio Mendes, before crossing into funk and disco and way before venturing with The Black Eyed Peas, did record some cool latin jazz/bossa nova, I like The Swinger From Rio (1964) featuring Tom Jobim. Eliane Elias is another (later) talented jazz pianist from Brazil, her album Plays Jobim on Blue Note (1989) is a fine exemple. Nana Vasconcelos was another great percussionist and so is Paulinho Da Costa. If you like vocalists Flora Purim recorded with many jazz fusion musicians in the 70s and 80s, including her husband Airto Moreira. Ana Caram, another vocalist, did some fine recordings in the 90s on David Chesky's label. All those artists can be considered more mainstream, some might say more commercial, but they are all great ambassadors of Brazilian crossover jazz, so I'd thought I'd mention them. In the young talents please check the pianist Amaro Freitas.

Danny - thank you so much for doing this. I know very little about Brazilian jazz. After watching this I found a few of these albums online. MP3 only but still listenable. I'm really liking this. This is the power of the internet when used in a good way. Very few things in this life make me as happy as finding new music to love. I wouldn't have known about this otherwise. Great work.

Nice video & selections. I think part of the reason why Airto made it so big in the States & Europe was because of the 1964 military coup in Brazil. He & Flora moved to California in exile. Have met a lot of Brazilian music fans who haven’t heard much of them. Gilberto Gil & Caetano Veloso were both detained by the Govt late 60’s and were living in West London in exile for a few years. Pretty sure they took Reggae to Brazil from the Caribbean community there.

I wanted to recommend an amazing lp I just found in my record shelf new and unplayed from apparently a very long time ago....New Blue Horns...on Riverside...1959. Unissued versions of the blues....Chet Baker, Kenny Dorham, Nat Adderly, Clark Terry, Blue Mitchell.....amongst the above quartets, quintet, and sextets we have other greats...Monk, Art Blakey, Paul Chambers, Bill Evans and more. A forgotten lp that brings to us amazing amazing beautiful jazz. I have the OJC lp from 1986 and it sounds fantastic...can be had new still on the cheap!!

This one called out to me though. Gonna try for a 2007 Japanese pressing. I really dug A1,A2, B2,B3 of Syncro Jazz - Live...love the flow of these tracks...looks like the 2019 re-issue of 500 still has copies available out there. Thank You Danny for this great education.
