I'm a 55 year old disabled cancer survivor who also survived open heart surgery and I have managed to maintain my good attitude (life's good most of the time) I really don't have any problems I have a couple issues but who doesn't have issues. Anyway sometimes I just need a good cry and David Gates is my go-to guy. All I have to do is listen to, I found your diary underneath the tree and started reading about me? That's as far as I get before I burst into tears. There's nothing like a good cry and then it's all about moving forward and once again life is good most of time 💖❤️💖

Andrew, mate ,,,,at least you make it thru the first verse, I know all his stuff by heart and only need to think of the song to loose it. Give Freedom a listen, upbeat song, David is a very gifted writer and performer, so glad to have found his work back in the day, even if it is painful to listen too. I hope there is someone or something special in your life that makes it worth living, and if that is the case , I wish you nothing but good health and happyness, you lucky guy

My God, how can a song be so gentle and crushing at the same time?? Even after the crushing blow, when he realized "the love she'd waited for, was someone else, not me..." he still wished the BOTH well. '
While living in Las Vegas I got to go to a Bread concert. I was only 14 and it was 1977. Had gotten a backstage pass and after the concert was over my friend and I met David Gates..he invited us up to the party but we passed on that. Just love the way he sings these ballads about love and relationships...the 70's was a great era of musicians!

"Bread" is (at least for me) remains 1 of the best bands of the 1970s. David Gates once explained that while most bands were SCREAMING ABOUT VIOLENCE -- i.e. overspill from the 1960s -- "Bread" decided to lighten up. The result? Pure sweetness & soft melodies that can charm the birds right out of the trees! They are superb singers & musicians! We are the beneficiaries of their brilliance. I count my blessings daily because of "Bread"! Peace & Love, Cav in Oregon. 10/28/15.

Another beautiful song by Bread. The words connect and the music soothes. Cheers, to all the others who know unrequited love.
This is why I love Bread so much. They show the real kind of true love. Unconditional love, and flawed people. Showing people how to love in the right way.
This is a whole love story in 3 verses and a chorus. To be able to do this in so few words is pure genius. I'd give my eye teeth to be able to write something that has as much power of story telling as this song has. One of the best songs ever written, in my opinion.
That is the genius of it, definitely. The economy of the world play is wonderful. David Gates had a unique ability to turn a phrase: "When she confronted with the writing there, simply pretended not to care," is a pretty amazing mouthful of a rhyme; in just a few syllables he conveys a complex series of emotional moments that we only fully understand in the proper context midway through the final verse. Very impressive.

The 1970s love songs and Guitar Rock.. Were the greatest time ever!
The last line should read "All the sweet things THEY can find." Ennobling, selfless love in spite of crushing betrayal and disappointment, indicative of the tender spirit of its author; so does the song "It Don't Matter To Me."

"The love she'd waited for was someone else, not me." ARGH. Those words are sad, but that's what a good song does to you, makes you feel the emotion. Bread is remembered today mostly as a soft rock group, but they certainly had heavier music in their catalog (Fancy Dancer from Guitar Man, one example).
Great song great work thank you for posting . best regards Steve in York

In between 1 & 2 was the one that I courted with no success and she now really regrets it and when we met again at a reunion she was hoping I would be single, (she, my wife and I are friends tho) but the gal I met 43 years ago this month is the keeper! In 1975 a few mos. after graduation, he was killed in a car wreck. We listened to other rock, but these songs I still know by heart. I miss you, Gary, and I love you and hope to be with you again.

That was me, as a Teen... To want love, and need it, so badly, and just when it seemed I had it, I was denied it. Ah, to be that young again.... So many choices I'd have made differently, if I'd known then, what I know today. But... that's the past. Going back again is a flight of fantasy, not today's reality. You see... sometimes life's funny quirks and changes, bring you both back around the same way... and reunite you. That's my life... and my observation is? Sometimes you have to spend a lot of time, with Ms. Wrong... to appreciate Ms. Right. I'm just glad that we finally found each other...again...after spending years, wasted with the wrong people. I miss my youth... but not that initial heartbreak. Not at all.

LOL You know I get to this old song and is going 2022 because someone broke up in Christmas of 2021 and expect the man that she loves would love her. To all the single women, pray for the man who loves you and is willing to marry you, and do not pray to the one who you love and does not love you! The same for the man, love the woman who loves you and not the one who does not care for you. It will be karma if this thing happens! This is a tragic sentimental, hopeless romantic love song!
