This came from the era of peace and love. My wife of 42 years has always and will continue to be the love of my life. This came out when we were dating. We would sit in my 69 chevelle ss with the doors open listening to the 8track. Vowing to love one another to the end of time. We are still going strong with no end in sight. Love you sweetie 4 ever and always..😘😍

David Gates is one of those songwriters that got noticeably better over the years. There was a bit of jealousy in the band because he got all of the hits, but let's face it...he wrote the better songs. 'I Want To Make It With You', 'It Don't Matter To Me', 'Everything I Own' (about his deceased dad), 'Diary', 'Aubrey' (which I can't listen to without tears), 'Guitar Man', etc.

Jeanette Wyatt If my intention was to ‘start an argument’, I would have used inflammatory words. The last sentence I wrote was “ I didn’t think this was”...that implies that I don’t know. If my intention was to argue I would have declared that I knew it wasn’t written about his father...but I don’t know that. It’s called a conversation.

This song can be best described as a poem set to music. My English teacher in the 70's had our class focus on the poem, not the music. But so very powerful with music. This is especially evident at the point where Gates sings, "If the world should stop revolving spinning slowly down to die, I'd spend the end with you". I think you missed the power of the words in this song. As a kid, I know I missed it when I first heard it in 1971. But my oh my, does this song ever mean so much more to me once I allowed the words to drive.

This song is a challenge to sing but so worth it. I'm glad you enjoyed it and that you listened kinetically. A song from the same group but with a different mood is Dismal Day. It describes some big parts of my life, and I am impressed with just how high Gates gets on it.

I first heard this song when I was 6. It was played at the end of a Hardy Boys show when Shaun Cassidy's character got heartbroken by a dumb girl! He was walking alone sad on the beach and they played this song. I asked who sang that song and from then until now I've been a huge fan! My pastor growing up also loved Bread he'd go around his house singing Diary and Aubrey! Coolest pastor I've ever know! Much love JCJ!!

David Gates had amazing songwriting skills. He wrote a ton of great songs, Guitar Man is probably Bread's most famous song, then he had others like Aubrey (my personal favorite), The Goodbye Girl (his biggest solo hit, which was made for the movie of the same name), Suite Clouds and Rain, among others.

My first record was either Blue Moon by The Marcels or Are You Lonesome Tonight by Elvis both in 1960 at 6 years of age. I didn't realise "The Twist" was a cover by Chubby Checker :)

@@Isleofskye Hank Ballard originally recirded it but the words were considered sexual and it never went anywhere. Chubby Checker put a dance to it and it was his biggest hit. He followed it up with "Let's Twist Again Like We Did Last Summer.. Over here you'd hardly find anyone who has heard of Hank Ballard and Chubby Checker is considered the only one to sing it and not a cover.

I named my second daughter Aubrey after a song of the same name from Bread. The first line of the the song goes "And Aubrey was her name." I thought, well of course it is. So my ex-husband and I named our second baby Aubrey. She'll be 30 in December.

Oh, sweet memories from my childhood. I love this song. I had an album (yes a real vinyl record) with this on it and would listen to it over & over (and of course sing along). Davis Gates, one of the most talented and prolific songwriters ever!!! The man put out so much music and he was a literal hit machine! Also, this was a song that everyone always wanted to learn to play on the acoustic guitar. Of course the number one everyone wanted to learn was Stairway to Heaven. But this one was very popular to learn back in the day.

I use to listen to this when I was a young teen! My sister and I each had own copy of the album The Best Of Bread. One side had all the slow songs, the other the fast. For a time, every night when we went to bed we would put them on the record player - you could stack them, when one finished the next would drop - and fall asleep to Bread crooning; first the fast side then the slow side. One of the few good memories of my childhood.

Bread one of my favorite groups of all time. At the time this guy and I was best friends. This was somewhere in the early to the mid seventies he owned a 1965 Mustang and we would listen to Bread on his eight track tape player. We were best friends for quite a few years. I miss those days. We didn’t drink or do drugs. We just hung out together and had a lot of good times. I no longer live in the same area. I have not seen him in a while. I might try some time this summer to stop by and see him. He met this girl a couple of years later and they got married and have been together ever since. I am married to but it took me a while to find the right person. I have been married for thirty-seven years. They have been by far the best years of my life. I got really really lucky.

It was just a Love Song. Plain and simple. I sang it as a solo in the 7th grade. Bread was BIG in 70's. My music teacher sure was shocked when I asked her if I could try it....but was pleased as well.

I wouldn't say that Bread was disco, they were considered more of a contemporary soft rock sound......Most of their songs are mellow, with great story lines, and soft soothing melodies......If you want to tap into your emotions, cry, or even just chill, Bread is a great listen :) ❤️ 💛 💙

Ty -- I don't know if you'll see this but I just watched you on Martha McCallum's program on Fox News channel. And I had already thought that we might have more in common that just great music -- and seeing you on Fox confirmed it. It looks like you ARE a renaissance man, and glad to see such an obviously wonderful human doing so well. I hope more people become aware of you. I'm definitely a fan!
