Usually I'm a jaded cynical asshole, that scoffs people mourning famous deaths. Kon's is one of the three deaths that really sadden me and leave me wondering how much more we could have gotten out of such an amazing person. Also, if you haven't already read that, Kon's last words, a letter to his parents as he was dying from cancer, are truly an incredible read that will leave you sobbing, and I think any of his fan would still love to read them nontheless www.makikoitoh.com/journal/satoshi-kons-last-words

Your satoshi kon series keeps getting me to cry I was born in Japan, lived in America and have since moved back to japan. At every turn in my life I’ve had to deal with being belittled for both who I am and the history of where I’m from. As a young girl in America with a Japanese accent, kids who had never met someone who is Asian would call me by slurs, blame me for things Imperial Japan had done, make fun of my accent and my food, until I hated myself for being Asian, until I attempted to eliminate everything “foreign” about me. Eventually, after both my parents had died while I was in my twenties I was left with the job of looking after my younger sisters. And as a teacher I couldn’t raise two kids in America, so I moved to where I was always a citizen, I went home for the first time. For a year finding work was hard, I was called a chameleon, a fake Japanese because I was so obviously American. For the first time I hated my younger self for hating me. People would accuse me of being complicit in what Americans did on Okinawa. Anytime an American did something shitty, somehow I was to blame. It’s been 5 years now, I’m still American in obvious ways, tattoos, unaccented english, and a love of watching videos like this to name a few. But now that I live in tokyo, had have synthesized my two histories, for the first time in my entire life, I’m happy. I finally feel love. This has been weird and rambly but I’ve always loved millennium actress for its prospective on WWII, about how both sides were grey, because as a kid and an adult history taught to me in part by millennium actress was my best defense against people who hated me for what I look like not who I am.

Hey I disagree Logan! I understand his work is tense and dark and features themes of sexual assault and violence a lot but this video specifically discusses very large scale acts of those themes in real life perpetrated by real people so I felt the least I could do was consider how that may affect my followers!

it's very, very rare that a video on this platform makes my eyes tear up. Rarer still that it's an analysis of cinematography putting me on the brink of crying. I had chills running down my spine every minute or so watching this video. I had to just sit still and stare at the screen for a full minute as I allowed the experience to properly sink in. Something about the way you discuss the notion of love resonates in my cold, sad, foreveralone heart in a way I cannot put into words. I could sit here and write a thesis-long comment about how much I adore your videos, the broad and universal scope that you steadily funnel down into a razor-sharp point over and over again, the unapologetic passion in your delivery that makes me care about things I never knew I could care about, the obvious care and research you put into understanding the full context of every aspect of these films... Seriously, I could go on forever, but I won't. You are the most heartfelt, sincere, and enthusiastic creator I have ever seen in any medium, and it absolutely blows me away every single time you put up a new video. I'm a creator myself: an illustrator, specifically, and I can honestly say that watching your videos inspires me to push myself, improve, and care about the work I make more than almost anything else I've ever experienced. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for everything you do, Breadsword.

To say that this video perfectly encapsulates the nature mankind’s love of love is an understatement. I’ve long since battled with extreme loneliness, crippling depression, suicidal and frightening thoughts, feelings of utter despair and a sense of total worthlessness. But that idea, the concept that I too could find someone who gives my heart the overwhelming sensation to stand up, move forward and RUN for all I am worth......that is one of the very few things that truly keeps me going in life. For a short moment in I had someone with whom I felt a shared love. But, much as with the many flawed, human and at times broken characters in this film, I too made my fair share of mistakes. Ultimately when I should have been moving towards that person and forward in life I opted to stay still and let the distance build. Mistakes, doubts, obsessions, anger, regrets, all of it pushing and pulling at life, when in reality, all I had to do was run past it, and go towards what I now know was love for the sake of love. For the first time in an extremely long time, as I watched your video today, I was moved to tears by something greater than the sum of it’s whole. Thank you.

Your video made me realize something: there's someone in my life I still love, despite all odds. And lately I've been bitter than I ever was, slowly turning into The Old Lady, like in the movie, because my pursuit for her has ended, because of the distance between us, physically and figuratively. It's too soon for me to stop running, I must run after her, no matter where it takes me... Thank you.

That made me cry! Millennium Actress is my favorite film of all time, period. It resonates deeply with me, because... I've been obsessive about shipping since early childhood, and... It's something that makes me really happy, but at the same time, it gets to me sometimes that the characters I love aren't real. It can be a reminder of what I don't have in my own life, what I can't truly believe I'll ever find. If I had to show someone how it feels, I'd just show them Millennium Actress. Chiyoko's in love with this idea of a man she met once, and is constant pursuit of something unattainable. And the movie also has a lot to say about our relationship with fiction, how it's as much a part of our lives as external reality. That's the point of showing Chiyoko's movies as part of her and Genya's real life -- to them, the distinction is meaningless. And now that I think about it... Fiction is the eternal pursuit of our desires and ideals. God, what a painfully beautiful movie!

So worth the wait, and I eagerly awat more! Satoshi KKon is one of my favorite filmakers of all time. Every one of his films managed to shake me emotionally. I did a presenttion on him for my Asian Art History course in college. My professor had never heard of him before, but became hooked onto his cinema shortly after. It was actually my professor that told me one morning of the heart breaking news that Kon has passed away, the next semester after I had presented. He was an amazing creator whose creations connected people so well.

That intro definitely describes me when I was younger too, maybe even still now! I still feel that inside me these days, no matter how negative things make me or I make myself...

We need more people like you in the world in my opinion, or so it seems, because I don't actually know you in person. But...To be so honest and aware of our nature as humans, the history going from our respective countries to what we've achieved as a species, as well as the horrible things we have done to ourselves and to the world around us is captivating to say the least. Thank you, really. Almost every single one of your video analyses has moved me in a way that would make me feel guilty if I didn't share your content with people, sadly I'm from South America and pretty much nobody here speaks English on a fluent enough level to follow your train of thought throughout your compositions, that being said, you definitely need more exposure. This episodes about love really hit it kind of close to home right now for me, because I'm currently dealing with the "loss/absence of love" at this particular moment of my life. Keep being smart, and uploading content that makes you proud, I and many others will be waiting with our thinking caps on for your next upload.

I wish I had watched this when you first uploaded it. It wouldn’t change how I feel but it’s like you’re late to a party that everyone’s been to but still want to enjoy it anyways. This message of love, the artistry of how it presents its theme throughout a single action as running and how it reflects so strongly on what it means in Satoshi Kon’s Millennium Actress. It all feels like a memorabilia of the beautiful, tragic, and heart-pounding feelings that are invoked and pulled out from a long forgotten memory until now. Your work on these video essays rlly lets me see these things in a whole different perspective than I originally saw them. My eyes and heart are open to all of these subtle motifs, thought-provoking imagery, and deep symbolism that escaped me the first time I watched it. And it makes me want to rewatch it all over again just to see it w/ these new ideals that you’ve inspired within me. I want to thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos. They mean so much not just to me but for anybody else who has felt like chasing after something impossible was still something worth trying. I hope that you continue to inspire others just the same.

This film is always one of my favourites, it is so beautiful in a Japanese way told with modern and western ideology. It shows you the beauty of uncertainty and loss, and wave it with the burning desire to chasing behind pure and love. You made a great video, and I really envy your ability to tell this story with such elegance and passion. I am just sorry that youtube didn't really reword long video that is long not because it refuses to end, but there is just so much to tell.

You actually moved me to tears with your video. Thank you so much, this feels like a love letter. This feels like poetry. I sat completely transfixed in front of my laptop for 32 minutes, existing very much outside the timely boundary. You resparked my love or this movie I couldn't watch for the last couple of years. Whenever a movie touches me so deeply but I don't understand why, I try to push it away from me. You actually made me understand why it frightens me so and I feel like I can watch it another time. Again, thank you so much for your hard work!
