Hey y’all!! Thanks so much for tuning in to another dumpster diving adventure. We were so surprised to find MORE ephemera that we found a few months ago.. in the same apartment complex but a different dumpster. The photos are beautiful, we’re guessing that they are 1940’s and definitely from a Navy ship. We’re just blown away and can’t wait to share them in an upcoming newsletter ❤ hope you all have a great day!! I kept thinking about how y’all use the word ephemera and your use of it isn’t how I thought of it, I thought it meant something that didn’t last long or live long like a Lunar Moth, so I used Google to find out, and Google says that it is something that’s short lived. I remember hearing the word used by an appliance delivery driver in 1995 when he saw a lunar moth on my front door frame. And until y’all started using it I don’t think I’d heard it since 1995. It’s a pretty word I think. 😊 Also, I’m pretty sure that bone shaped pad is to put animal’s food and water bowls on.

There’s a Victor Edward Lauderdale repository at the University of North Texas, Willis Library in Denton, TX. Victor Edward Lauderdale was a corporal and member of the first platoon and in charge of the 5th squad during World War I. HIS SON was in WW2 and it seems you are finding his things in the dumpster. Here’s his obituary: Victor E. Lauderdale, Jr., 91, of Denton, passed away on Wednesday, December 25, 2013. He was born on April 3, 1922 in Ambrose, Texas to Victor E. Lauderdale, Sr. and Opal Meals Lauderdale. He married Juanita Jenkins in Italy, Texas in 1943. He served in the United States Navy during WWII and was a retired professor from Tarrant County Junior College. His wife Juanita passed July 2014 after living in Denton 64 years. (I don’t think the younger relative realizes the history they are throwing away in the dumpster. Glad you are saving it!)

Hi! I believe the photograph you found with the name “Lusk” just might be a relative of mine. I took a screenshot of the picture and sent it to my sister and we both think the writing is that of our grandmother’s. Very distinctive. Also, her maiden name was Lusk, a fact I had forgotten earlier. We have/had ties to Texas and Mississippi and our father served in the navy during WW2. Very cool find and thank you for saving a bit of history.

Honestly if there is family, they may not have any connection to anyone in those photos. We have close to 100 photo albums and the last 2 of us have no children. When we go those albums will end up in a landfill somewhere. It's sad but it is inevitable, in our case at least.
@GuyWithTheDogs6 ай бұрын
@@vcneveroski Indeed. I know that there are people who like to collect and save pictures of strangers, but as interesting as that may seem to some people, it does nothing to "preserve the memory" of the subjects in the pictures. The pictures are simply some of the trappings of life that come and go. They are the flotsam and jetsam of our experiences.
@lolaottinger30386 ай бұрын
@@vcneveroski My grandparents lived in a rather small town in Texas during the oil boom, I had quite a few old photos of them, one showing them outside a tent they lived in while waiting for their house and grocery store to be built. My daughter told me a few months ago that she wanted all of my photos, but chances are she would not be able to name any person or place before her grandmother’s generation. One of my nephews has developed a keen interest in some of the old photos and I did give him some I had, and one of my cousins worked on a family tree but sadly there are many mistakes in it and I am probably the last living person that could make corrections to it now that my cousin has passed away, but don’t think anyone has time for that anymore. Lort! I lost my train of thought, but back on track now, the town turned the Depot into a museum, and I’m thinking about getting copies of all of the old photos I have and sending them to the museum. So maybe there is a museum near you…..
@mariah36546 ай бұрын
@@GuyWithTheDogs That is your experience. There was an article in The New York Times where someone had found a loads of black & white negatives taken by a nanny of everyday people in New York in the 50s. The pictures ended up being worth a lot of money, the were like art. I loved looking at every single one of them, even though I didn't know the people in the photos - neither did the woman who took the photos. She would just randomly take pictures out on her walks when she was a nanny with the kids. It was fascinating to look through them. People do collect negatives and develop them from garage sales, etc., not knowing the people. So yes, it does keep their memory alive.

I LOVE your channel and your caring ways when discovering people's pictures, and, of course, the care you take in trying to save and reuse as much as you can from the dumpsters. I was curious why you thought the picture of the killing of pigs was beautiful? You seem to be such sensitive people and love and care about animals. Ever since I was very young, it's been hard for me to see animals treated cruelly--I stopped eating meat at the age of ten when I understood what I was eating--my parents were so mad at me. Anyhow, I think you guys are amazing with what you do in bringing awareness to all of us that we need to be less wasteful. Thank you for that!!
