I'd be damn. After watching quite a few KZbin videos on my MasterLock 1813M that I forgot combo for a long time and was not able to use. Was getting quite disappointed with all of them because they were cumbersome and confusing. Then picked this video by Sammy because he had 300,000+ views and I said "why not?" gotbletu These Masterlocks were never safe. It was only a couple years ago that they changed the designs so that you couldn't easily pop the open with a soda can (you still can but it takes actual skill now). This just simplifies the decoding process which used to be quite involved.

gotbletu ABUS "Combination 78) locks don't work. I've tried it numerous times. Their locks either don't have a resistance spot or it's very hard to find. I've tried it with numbers assumed to the closest locked position and it never works.

This was the only tutorial that worked for me. I could get the first digit, but I struggled on the last digit. I had a lot of trouble working out which gate was the loosest because they all seemed the same to me. Samy’s work allowed me to bring it down to a choice of two and then the lock was opened. Yeah, that's what seems to work for everybody, just trying to build what you want to. I'm interested in programming and really just having a strong understanding of computers. I watched one of the episodes of the tim ferriss experiment where you hacked together a useful program that used data from other sites. That's what I would like to be able to do. I've been doing tutorials all over the place (probably not the best strategy), but I come away from it feeling like I haven't really learned anything. I know the next step is to apply what i've learned to personal projects. The problem is that, because I feel like I haven't learned anything, I never know where to begin. It's the vicious circle syndrome. Or it's the I'm-just-being-a-bitch-about-it syndrome. I'm not sure which, tough diagnosis. Anyway, thanks for getting back to me so quickly, and any advice is much appreciated!

Further optimization: you don't have to start over for each 2nd digit. In your case you could dial 20-2-16, then 6-16, then 10-16, 22-16, 26-16, etc. Once the 2nd digit you're trying is past the 3rd, stop going all the way around and go directly back to the second.

@@dudeurodude3845 Given that you know the first and last digit, you can rip through a list of middle digits fairly rapidly. Once you have dialed the first combo and tried the shackle, go straight to the next middle digit in your list, then of course the last (known) digit trying the shackle again, then the NEXT middle digit in your list, the known final digit, try shackle, etc. Say we know first digit is 3, last is 5, and the middle could be 0,10,20,30, we would dial: 2 full dial turns right to reset the lock 3-0-5-pull (pull means try the shackle) 10-5-pull 20-5-pull 30-5-pull Also, because of the dial slop (being able to accept numbers +- 2 of the correct one), it's actually easier to just run all possible middle digits than to bother with a list. I personally start out with 0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, etc, all the way to the top or until it pops. Have Fun.

I think this optimization may only work when the 2nd digit is larger than the first. I tried it with a lock whose combination was 4-14-36. Suggestions for the 2nd digit were 2, 6, 10, 14, 18, etc. If I try using the optimization and begin with 2 as the middle digit, it doesn't work, probably because "going past the 4" first means almost 2 complete revolutions of the dial. I try 6-36, 10-36, 14-36, and the lock doesn't open. If I begin with 6 as the 2nd guess, however, it works as you state -- 10-36, and then 14-36 opens the lock.

You don't need to know what the third number is. After you have turned the dial to the first two numbers you put tension on the hasp and turn the dial counter clockwise. When you hit the last number it will open.

I opened a second lock and it worked. But unfortunately, the first number was correct and second one was on the list, the third number was way off. It took me 50 tries to open the second lock, I was like why isn't it working, then it finally worked and realized the third number was wrong.

Interesting twist with my combo lock: I only had a single number locking up under 11 (6). So I tried your suggestion of going to 10-20 and looking for numbers there. Again, only 1 position (16). Out of curiosity I tried 20-30 (nothing), and 30-40 (36). So on the whole dial only 6, 16, and 36 locked up. I figured out through another method that my combination has the same first and 3rd digit (26). Using your tool, I just have to leave the Second Locked Position blank and it will give me the correct combination options. End combo was 26, 8, 26!

Turned out I had the wrong resistance number. technique works!!! i recommend taking time and repeated effort to get the 1st, 2nd lock, and resistance positions. then once you can get those positions then you have a much easier and better chance finding the right combination.

I wasn't able to 100% use your method in the video but through your video and website using the calculator you created I was able to figure out the combination to my mothers probably 50 to 60 year old master bike lock. It doesn't have a resistance location so I found the first 2 lock position numbers and plugged them in. Then I went through all 12 locked positions and found the anomaly as some put it. I then started with a resistance of 0 and increased .5 until i found where i had the option of my anomaly as my third number. the second number i tried as the second digit was correct. I have been trying to crack this combination lock for 20+ years and only thanks to your information was i able to do it.

+bryan986 You're probably getting the wrong point of resistance. Lift high up on the shackle as you can, but then fasten the shackle in place with your fingers on each side the way he does in the video. That way, it's up as high as it needs to be to find the point of resistance without putting too much stress on the shackle. Then, spin counter clockwise to get your number of resistance. It worked like a god damn gem for me.

His method does have some merit to it, it did predict two combinations correctly for me. What I've seen done at gyms where these lock are most often used is thieves will run a solid bar of steel inside the shackle and use the lock itself to twist off the metal tabs on the gym locker to gain entry in a rapid fashion. This makes sense, they've got to do their thing and gain entry in 10 seconds or less.

@@samykamkar Finding resistance point is not possible on some of the locks of this model. For these, the only recourse is to use the more tedious and somewhat error prone method which have you first find all twelve lock points (that's the error prone part), after which some arithmetic jiggery-pokery gives the third number, 10 possibilities for the first number and 8 possibilities for the second = 80 possible combinations. There are 64,000 (40x40x40) possible three digit numbers in base 40, not 64,000 possible combinations for this lock. The number of possible physical combinations for this Master lock is 40 X 10 X 8 = 3,200.

@@Bankable2790 It's exactly as Sammy does in this video from 0:49 to 1:45, where he finds the first two. You just continue turning counterclockwise to find them all. Here's one of the many written procedures on the web on what to do with them: www.art-of-lockpicking.com/how-to-crack-a-master-lock/. Note that these written procedures have you write down all twelve, not just the ones that center on numbers. You end up ignoring the ones that land between numbers as Sammy did, but it's wise to have them in case you don't get the results expected from this step. Having the whole set makes it easier to go back and figure out which one(s) you read wrong. Sammy's lock and mine are not sloppy, so that wasn't a problem, but some of these locks can have a lot of range in the lock points so it's easy to misread what the center point is. - Good Luck

I had to watch the in depth video to understand how this lock works before I had an appreciation for the resistance point you were talking about. Once it was clear what was happening, the website solver gave me the correct combination among the 8. This is very cool!

if you're getting more than 1 spot than you're pulling too hard... pull a bit lighter and it should only stick in one spot.. add 5 to the resistance point for your first number
