Their surname is Mario because the first couple of games were "Mario Brothers" games. It was initially referring to Mario and his Brother, but that usage implies that they both have the surname mario. Then Miamoto codified it in an interview!

Imma be a party pooper and agree with Howsey, overly complicated gossips are not that funny. it slows the game down and is rarely entertaining. Shitgossiping is funny but if you’re gonna make a joke at least make it quick
