I find making a sim with 2 good traits and a 'Fatal flaw' always mixes things up. I used to do it in 2 & 3 and loved the fact Medieval had this baked in. It make sims more rounded with good & bad behaviours

If I want to make a more flawed sim, I'll do the personality quiz that you get recommended when starting a new game I usually end up making a new sim and copying over the traits so I can change the aspiration, but it's useful to get yourself over that block 😅

one of my sims has burn scars and wears an eyepatch due to losing an eye. i have background reasons for it and how he tries to hide it and how it impacts his behavior and personality, and it's pretty interesting

i love doing this! i typically change most features of my sims (whether it be from how i first generate them or from how they naturally age up) but i love leaving whatever details that are generated with them, like the medical wearables, birthmarks, etc.

I recently made a TS4 Sim who constantly and consistently wears only that ridiculous robot suit, called her First Name Last Name, and started her on a rags-to-riches-esque limitation where I wasn’t allowed to get a standard job and could only make money with odd jobs and stuff I found. The more I played with her, the more story kinda unfolded. Thus far, I’ve decided that she’s a research bot living in Sulani. She was supposed to be a joke character, but I’ve literally only played with her for today, and out of my years playing TS3 and TS4, she is already one of my favorite Sims I’ve ever played.

Oh I feel that! I made a super evil "me" to play on a whim and they've quickly turned into my longest lasting Sim with a growing story and unnecessary amount of lore.

Also something else that can be surprisingly good for inspiration is that story feature!! You just sorta click randomly and work from that! I for example got an insane mermaid gardener who likes purple and pipe organs! It was fun making her looks (and even house) with that in mind!

I actually didn't know the story feature can generate occults until now. For me it always makes 'human' sims. Is there something you have to select in order to make it count? Because it didn't change even when I responded to the questions I assumed would determine the occults, such the ones like what do you think about sunlight and whether aliens exist.

@@tomokokurokiirl there are specific questions ( "What do you think about the ocean?" "What do you know about vampires?" and "Do you belive in magic?" Are the ones I usually go after but there are plenty more) And if you select the correct choices ("I feel at home" for mermaids, "you can always count on me, erm them" for vampires, and "give me a wand and a spellbook and I'll show you magic" for spellcaster) you have a very high chance of making them! I don't own werewolves and get to work (aka aliens) yet so I don't know the questions for them... Edit: I just looked up on the wiki, it seems like it's kind of a point system, so if you jeep randomizing until you get the right questions you win!

I like using the story feature for making adult Sims since it can generate them with skill points without fussing with cheats. But it can take a few tries if you're trying to get occults, and several if you want them to have a specific skill.

I’ve been trying to play with “sims I don’t like” I start out small like maybe the looks, or a trait I don’t like/don’t use. For example I use a lot of trait that are “good”, eg good, bro, cheerful, neat, active, loyal ect… So what I now do is I can use 2 “good” traits but MUST add at least one “bad/not ideal” like hates children, loner, lazy ect just to get me into a different life. 🙂

Yeah, same here, I don't like playing actually just bad sims. But I started balancing out the personalities of all my sims, including NPCs. Some will get two positive and one negative trait. Some will get two negative and one positive trait. I find all Sims more fun to play this way :) I also try to make the negative traits make sense in the whole of their personality.

Reminds me of the Sims Medieval trait system. You got two traits that could be good or bad, but you also had to pick a fatal flaw guaranteeing at least one negative aspect. There were also quests you could complete, optionally, to turn them into positive ones.

I play with legacy challenges like Not So Berry and similar, where I’m given themes and traits for each gen. Helps me break out of my comfort zone in building and CAS. I still find myself using female sims for my heir 99% of the time but I blame the lack of CAS for male sims for that, female sims just have so many more options even with CC 😂

Something that I started doing is what I call the 'Name Challenge'. Basically, you randomize a name and then create a Sim based on the vibes you get from the randomly generated name. It's a really fun Create A Sim challenge!

a thing i do is randomize the sims and try to stick to what got rolled. for the outfit I pick a piece of clothing and build their style around it, and unless I go in with already a strong idea, I randomize traits

I don't use TS4 much anymore but in TS3, sims with negative personality traits are SO fun. I do random rolls for a lot of my legacy challenge kiddos because it's cool to just see what you get. It's also fun to try and interpret their traits in different ways or tie them into their backstory. I usually roll all their personality traits when they're born so I can play the sims with their full personality in mind from the beginning.

I recently made a little bo peep sim + build and it was really fun! I’m still working on the landscaping of the build but once i’m done I’ll put it up on the gallery bc the little cottage I made is super cute and i’m really proud of it. I rarely decorate in all pastels and most of my builds are a little bigger, so it was definitely a bit of a challenge.

I’ve started making it a rule where I’m not allowed to change anything about the random sim except what can be changed in real life. I have to work with the features I’m given, and it’s led to some really interesting and unique looking sims! I also try to keep their hair texture the same but just give them a better cut/style

unless i have a specific vision in mind from the start, i randomise all of my sims' traits (and preferences, sometimes) and build the rest of them after. i don't like having too much control over who my sims are as people bc i know i'll gravitate towards certain things - i even have mods that automatically randomise traits when ppl age up, and i LOVE discovering traits and preferences in gameplay. some of my favourite traits to play with nowadays are traits i never even used to consider when i actively chose them, bc they're more negative, but i just LOVE the gameplay effects and the sims i've created w them. it's sooo much more fun than having perfect sims, especially if ur like me and make gameplay decisions based on ur sims' personalities rather than ur own

I also recommend changing the cc style just for a week, I’m an alpha cc user since the start, but after using maxis match for a week two years ago, I started to use different methods to make sims and now sometimes mix the styles!

My first ever sim, in her lore, was an evil demon hellbent on destruction who saw Bella goth and decided know what pretty lady, drowned Mortimer in a pool, and then got with Bella, all the while just being generally annoying and unlikable and I miss it so much, sadly when I accidentally overwrote my main save I lost him 😭 still gotta get back to remaking him lol

It was so much fun imagining what like Justice or The Hanged Man would be like as a person. (Justice ended up being a teenage girl and The Hanged Man became a sickly looking little freak btw.)

One of my favorite sims I have ever made is a sim who started off as the human version of Flurry from Animal Crossing (she's my favorite villager) and that same sim ended up being named Angelica Innoscent who looks super sweet and adorable on the outside but is actually a notorious criminal who is secretly trying to become a mob boss. Something I do in CAS is randomize two to four Sims, then create their children. Sometimes I'll do this for several generations until I get a Sim I particularly like. And I can then go back and customize the others whenever I am in the mood to design Sims. It keeps their appearances a little more "fresh" than the generic Sims the game generates when you hit random.

I struggled as well with making Sims to my liking. If they're female I made them too much like me & if male, I made my perfect husband lol What broke me out of this was randomizing traits & aspirations, & forcing myself to keep to them. I also started randomizing clothing, hair, & makeup & would only clean up anything too out of sorts or color mismatched

I have a really bad habit of that too! Something that I do is that edit townies that I don’t like but my one rule is “I can’t change the face beyond 1-2 features nor can I change the skin color” It helps a lot. I’ll change 1-2 features to make them sim look more ethnically accurate but beyond that, it all just styling!
