I grew up singing in church too and my choir director would not let me change from tenor to bass, when my voice began to change. He always told me that he couldn't afford to lose me at tenor, in the choir. And today at 56, I still can sing tenor after some 50 backgrounds on records here in Nashville over the last 20 years.

Would love to find some clip of his brothers singing too, he seems very impressed by their talent and he himself is fantastic. Talented family he comes from

Yes if ya don't use your voice it loses it's tone especially after 60, I note the I have to sing 1 hr every day if possible, to keep in tune

Hi Bill and Reggie, I’m a speech language pathologist. With regards to keeping your “boy” voice, this can be dangerous because some teenagers have been treated for having an unusually high pitched voice and not being able to use their “man voice.” It is natural for a male voice to “break” or deepen during puberty. If you mess with this you could potentially damage your vocal folds.
