Breakfast with the Elephants - Maryland Zoo

This was a very unique experience. Maryland Zoo in Baltimore hosts Breakfast with the Animals around 2x a month for several months in the spring and summer before the zoo opens for limited number of guests. Breakfast, chat with the keepers, a special gift and other fun takes place during the 90 minute event. Once the zoo opens, guests are free to continue enjoying the rest of the zoo. This was a great experience, and Annette was in heaven the entire morning. Was nice to have the exclusive time in the zoo. Another video will arrive next week covering the rest of our day at the zoo.

I had a chat with an African Cow, almost 30 years ago. This was at what used to be Marineworld/Africa U.S.A., in Vallejo, Solano County, California, at the top of San Pablo Bay, of the greater San Francisco Bay. It was a 10 or so minute ride on the elephant's back. After the ride was finished, I got to hang out with her for about 3 minutes . . . while her wrangler WAS NOT looking. We said our hellos; I stroked her cheek; I stroked her shoulder and flank; and such huge soft and tender brown eyes! Her hide, though you could tell was extremely thick, felt so velvety; I would think that her handlers give her frequent rubdowns with lotions and emollients, to get that soft skin. And, always those EARS! I rested my cheek against hers, and she brought her trunk to gently rest upon my shoulder . . . I think we were starting a wonderful acquaintanceship. Well, daggummitt, her wrangler saw us, and said FIRMLY, "Step away NOW, or in 30 seconds, Park Security escorts you out of the Park, PERMANENTLY!" But, I did get to have my "Mama Tembo" moments, with a Pachy! I felt like the late Elsa Martinelli's character, "Dallas"/"Mama Tembo" . . . "Mother of Baby Elephants", in the Kikuyu tongue, from the 1962 John Wayne movie, "Hatari!". Would this zoo have breakfasts with Lions, Cheetahs . . . Rhinos . . . as well? There is at least one high-tone resort in Africa, where you can take extended peaceful safaris, mounted on these wonderful pachyderms. I sure WOULD go, if I had the money. Ah, yes; to spend time with my mount, once the day's ride is finished, to help feed him/her, and spend as much time with her/him, as I'm allowed!
