This is an interesting situation. For one, he said this to somebody’s kid. This would have passed me off as a parent if it was said to my child. I can see why someone would be upset about a cop saying that. The second point, is whether we are including cops as one of the rest of us. They receive significantly more protections than the general public. If there were another cop in dander and you in danger, we know the cop would save the other cop first. They don’t see themselves as one of us when their uniform and badge are on. They see us as a bunch of threats.

I agree that this situation is an interesting one but only because the context in which it was used. Usually, as a fellow African-American with the n-word readily accessible in my vocabulary, it doesn’t come off as derogatory; in other words, it’s usually used as a term of endearment as opposed to demeaning. That being said, the way the cop used it sounded derogatory. Used in a way of superiority, to put down. Whether he meant it in that way or not, leaving it up to interpretation probably isn’t the smartest move in his profession 🙇🏽‍♂️
