Tash B On the Origins of “Dominican” The first recorded use of the word "Dominican" is found in a letter written by King Phillip IV of Spain in 1625 to the inhabitants of the Spanish colony of Hispaniola. In this letter, which was written before the arrival of French settlers on the Western side of the island, the King congratulates the "Dominicans" for their heroic efforts in defending the territory from an attack by the Dutch fleet. The term or demonym ("gentilicio") "Dominican" was used in reference to the Dominican Order - after their patron Saint Dominic - which had been a key institution and element in shaping the island's post-Columbian religious and civic identity for over a century. Stevie T On the Origins of “Dominican” The first recorded use of the word "Dominican" is found in a letter written by King Phillip IV of Spain in 1625 to the inhabitants of the Spanish colony of Hispaniola. This letter can be found today in the "Archivo General de Indias" in Seville, Spain....

Men do care about the same things as women.
@raymanjohan88387 жыл бұрын
Being a dark man and having light male friends we deal with this issue differently. We poke fun at each other about it but I think thats just because our generation processes this problem differently. I always thought that everyone handled it like the men did. Im now beginning to understand that women dont see it the same as us. Most the men in our generation just accepted what we felt insecure about, learned to embrace it, and kept it pushing. We were wrong to assume that our women did the same.
@kianah5447 жыл бұрын
Rayman Johan While I agree that black men deal with it differently, I can’t agree that they aren’t insecure about it and have embraced it. Maybe they’ve embraced their own dark skin but that doesn’t mean they embrace dark skin in general. Just because black men don’t feel inferior because of their own color, doesn’t mean they don’t perpetuate colorism. There are plenty of dark black men who project their insecurities onto dark black women. And that black man won’t tell you he’s insecure about his color. He’ll show you. He’ll usually do this by treating dark skinned women with the same level of respect CTG and Envy treated Amara with. He’ll do it by consciously or subconsciously making sure his kids don’t look like him by seeking out white or mixed women. Or if you really want to know how he feels, look at the language he’ll use to bash a woman who ironically looks just like his mother. Shes ugly. Shes bald. She’s nappy headed. He’ll use her hair texture against her, and he’ll make clear that it’s a negative feature, the very feature he himself has, which indicates some sort of insecurity that he deals with. He may internally blame her for it too. If this man was your friend, I doubt he would admit that to you. Black women don’t tell black men who worship white women they hate themselves just to be dramatic. Or one of this example man’s favorite words to describe the black woman: “bitter”. It has real basis. You can’t be so sure that most black men embrace it. When black men are insecure about their blackness, they’ll often place it on the black women who look like them. Black men may have the same insecurity of dark skin. It’s just manifested in a different way.

Keep asking the same questions over and over shows they were unbothered to even listen to her responses. Two grown ass men, one who wrote a book and both interviewed many entertainers but never heard or can't understand the issues of colorism and beauty standards among women in the entertainment industry. or rather think it is all in her head cause there is a Issa Rae and a Sza (only can name just 2)? Don't understand that there is an American market and a Latino market of music and she is trying to break in the American market to be worldwide. The point was not who is Young Hollywood and that his comments doesn't matter cause he is a nobody. The point was his comments echoes what the entertainment industry as a whole have been telling her and other dark skin Latinas for years. How can it be about if the music is great then it don't matter and then say Cardi B is America's sweetheart when she don't write her own lyrics or mix her own sound and is being carried all the way. What is the difference between Cardi B. and the internet Cash Me Outside girl (Bhad Bhabie)?? Really??? Hell Cardi B. can't even write her own tweets. Light skin ratchness will always win over a poise dark skin female human being is what DJ Envy and Charlemagne was serving in this interview. it was disgusting. Black Film Guild I did notice her getting a little tongue tied when explaining but it’s hard to get an issue when two people are practically questioning your very valid passionate argument for 30 minutes. I just think my biggest disappointment comes from the fact that i expected so much for Uncle Charla and Envy. They are usually very woke and intellectual people. But today they acted like everyone else. “Oh i didn’t hear of this struggle, it must be just a youthing and not an actual issue” but like amara said, there are a plethora issues in the world that they do not know about bc of how little the Afro latinx community speaks out about it and how little the media covers that particular topic. As intellects and radio host, they should’ve done a better job at listening and trying to understand her point.

I love what she represents, and I feel just as passionate as she feels; and this opens up dialogue regarding not only Afro-Latinos, but about the whole African diaspora-hell the Global African Presence is EVERYWHERE on this globe! (Runoko Rashidi). Angel Ramirez Jordan, who is a Pro-Black-Afro- Latino KZbinr, breaks it down perfectly, the difference between race and ethnicity; also the issue with colorism within these cultures.

The only difference between her and African Americans is that her ancestors from Africa were brought to South America as slaves instead of North America. So her ancestors adopted Spanish instead of English as their language. It's not that hard to understand.

Katrina White sis that's not entirely true. That slave trade story that they have been teaching us for hundreds of years is not ENTIRELY TRUE. Black people have been in every part of this plant for HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF YEARS. Yes some of our brothers and sisters from the mother continent was kidnapped and brought to other countries but only a few hundred thousand not the hundreds of millions that they have been lying about. So we have to understand that we are the original people of this entire planet and all other shades of people came after. Peace and love to you sis.💜

When black women advocate for themselves on this platform, the hosts take turns being as ignorant, defensive, disruptive, and dismissive as possible. This is so sad to still see from such a major platform in the culture. Black women should be first (not last) for us to develop and express compassion, coherence, and character in the presence of.

I am a latina woman (Cuban) who HAPPENS to be black and I am pissed. Y'all really let me down with this one. How can you sit up there and really question if the struggles she's talking about are real?? YES they are, and then to reference Cardi-B (who is one person and also light skin) as "proof" of how far we've come. Amara repeatedly stated that she was specifically speaking about the Latin American world which I can personally say and know that in our communities, no matter how beautiful, talented or educated, you will always be the last option as a black woman and it usually goes unsaid to the point where many wmen of color accept it as they way it is. Charlemagne says "idk why image is still a big deal in 2018". It's becauseeee the world is still ignorant af to what people of color STILL go through just to be heard, seen or even considered. I was so happy for Amara to be given this platform to speak out and to hear you guys say "oh but it's a storyline right?" truly just hurt.

Sharifa Rose this goes on everywhere. The moment you stop seeing yourself as Cuban and start seeing yourself as a African, you will understand.

Nick Harley So you read my whole reply and that’s all you got from it? Please please do not assume that I don’t know about my roots or LOVE the fact that I am black and of African decent. My words were specifically in regards to the ignorance in both Charlemagne and Envy’s comments. In Latin America we don’t really have anyone to really look up to in media as well as someone standing up for black rights at all so I was reaffirming her point from a personal view. Thank you

Nick Harley Nick Harley I’ll just mention a few quotes; “are you sure it’s like that or is that all in you head ?”or “is it a story line?” “I thought you were black until I heard you talk” “all of you sound like Cardi-B” you get the point. I hope

Deidra James Funny I'm seeing your comment saying this because I've literally just been on Twirra 2 minutes ago and there was a tweet someone wrote saying Angela Yee is always quiet when female guests get attacked. The thing is, from my perspective, Angela really couldn't jump out the gate on this topic because she can't relate to Amara's stuggle as a "dark-skinned" black woman with an afro. So Angela's input would be very limited, of course. I find it interesting though that the person jumped on Angela Yee rather than coming at the 2 males who were attacking Amara! How do these 2 clowns sit up there talking all that "light skin vs dark skin" mess ALL THE TIME but now when Amara brings it up, they try to play it down and act dumb??

They way I understand Afro-latina is the difference between race and ethnicity. So if you’re African American, your race is African but you live in America so that’s the place where you’re from and you live which is your ethnicity. But amara is afro Latina so her race is African but her ethnicity is Dominican(the place where she is from)

@andreacarter25517 жыл бұрын
I don't know why Charlamane acting like he don't understand. Let's take Destinys Child for example Beyonce is a Huge superstar no question I'm a big fan but how come Kelly Rowland is not just as big? She can sing just as good as her fellow bandmate? She has had some hit songs but I believe due to her skin color she doesn't get the same recognition and that's just plain FACTS. Colorism is still alive and kicking especially with women!
@supernovagirl7777 жыл бұрын
Andrea carter people running the industry are majority white people. White people prefer light skin and pretty hair. They want to appeal to people like them not the black communities or the Latin communities. And in no way am I saying this is right, I've just realized that's what going on.
@andreaj42517 жыл бұрын
Kelly to me is a good singer but Beyoncé is a great entertainer I’ve seen them both in concert Beyoncé sings dances runs 🏃🏾♀️around that stage & holds it DOWN 💪🏾I’ve never seen Kelly do that period. I don’t think it has anything to do with her complexion. I like them both by the way 🙂

@andreacarter25517 жыл бұрын
Tigerrose Lili carried away? She held her own in the group and can sing just a powerful as Beyonce. Just because she's not as animated as her doesn't mean she is not just as great. Beyonce entertains but Kelly can SING. I am a huge Beyonce fan but I still stand by my comment as far as Kelly and her skin color goes.
@donitaballard59287 жыл бұрын
Kelly's fame has nothing to do about colorism. She's fairly talented ,but she's not a Natural like Beyonce. Beyonce is not only talented but most of all she's driven and she's a workaholic. Now , I like Kelly more than Beyonce, but I can't agree on this particular comment.
