I am saddened by the news of Gordon Lightfoot's recent passing. He was a very gifted singer-songwriter who has produced so many good songs in a sixty-plus year career in music. My favorite song of his? If You Could Read My Mind, followed by The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and Sundown. He was truly a legend, not just in Canadian music, but world music, particularly in the U.S. Midwest with regards to the Edmund Fitzgerald ballad. May he rest in peace and gifted talent. I met him in Peterborough (festival of lights), it was about 2 in the afternoon. I spotted him at his trailer behind the bandshell and I yelled to him and said come over and say hello to your biggest fan. There was no one else around and I had the good fortune to have a one on one with him for a good half hour as he invited me to sit outside his trailer under the canopy. I told him that I did not think there is another musician that could make the music feel what the lyrics are saying like he does and he looked at me and said that is a very profound compliment and prolly thye nicest one I have gotten. It was my dream come true as I play most of his songs on my guitar and sing like him too as our singing voices are pretty much identical. Love you Gord

I never knew the rich history of Gordon Lightfoot and well..... now I do! Im from down here here in Columbus Georgia in the States and I will say to you if you get to read this.... that you so gracefully made a profound effect on me growing up.I loved the song Sundown ..it gives me nostalgic past memory chills as a 6 year old ,,,,,,I use to sing to your song everyday ...literally!!!! and it's now become a blessing to my personal life and thank You sir!From a number one fan here in the States.Thank you for all the important and sincere meaning in your song writing.

@@TangleF50 No, sorry. These are amateurs without a clue as to how to step back and let the star shine. While its important to keep the energy up and the interview going, even when the subject may be a bit slow (or humble) you ask the Q and get out of the way. The ability to interview is an art form, Howard Stern does it better than virtually anyone else, because he knows that despite his own success, its the guest who matters.

Saw him in concert in Vancouver at the QE Theatre - 1969 or '70. He was briliant. The music was superb (of course) - but he was funny as hell. Completely unexpected. It was so great, also, to see/hear John Stockfish and Red Shea - little did I know I'd be in Toronto in 1973 - doing session work produced by Gary Buck, and working with Ollie Strong, Al Brisco, Al Cherny, John Arpin - and Red Shea - shamelessly stealing any lick I could. Have loved Lightfoot for decades. My 51-yr-old son knows everyone of his songs - from my endlessly playing the vinyl albums, over and over. How incredibly grateful I am - to have come of age when Lightfoot and James Taylor, and YES, and Joni Mitchell, and Buffy Ste Marie and Steven Stills - were producing the best music of all time . . . Long may you all run . . .

One of my musical heroes - for a lot of reasons. Not the least of which: what he has been through physically including his time as an alcoholic. He is a survivor - salute!! But - listen to other interviews regarding how the Edmund Fitzgerald evolved and he'll tell you it was an article in a national magazine that inspired it. Not some night in an abandoned house as told here. He has the article framed in his house and even pulled some of the lines out of that article (as he read in that interview). The guy interviewing here should be selling used cars - not trying to interview one deserving of such respect. Singing the song together? That was a rare moment that won't be forgot (unfortunately).

The interviewers talk so fast. Why? It's really interesting. Everything is quick. "Let's get the words out. What are you doing???? What have you done??? Tell me now!!! "Let me tell you. Quickly! "Gordon Lightfoot is a poet, storyteller and iconic musician. Watching this is embarrassing.He should never had to agree to interview this way. Let's flip the script. Interviewers and media and audiences start to accommodate artists to hopefully... eventually... get it.

This is a very perceptive observation. Gordon Lightfoot was very gracious to them here but they did not merit it. Rest In Peace Gordon Lightfoot. A true master of his craft to the end. A poet of the first order and a Canadian national treasure.

Yeah...I always thought "Sundown" was about his relationship with Kathy Smith. I don't think that "I can see her lying back in her satin dress, in a room where you do what you don't confess" has much to do with the sun setting over some farmhouse somewhere. I guess he just didn't really feel like he should "go there" in this particular interview, because Gord seems like a pretty straight shooter. But I understand you need to pick your spots.
