As an avid Laker fan, these highlights don’t do his type of game justice; dunks & such. What he’s able to do on the court is unique. He’s a quarterback, smartest player on the court seeing 1-2 moves ahead of everyone else. He makes hockey assists. and fits amazing well next to dynamic scorers. As for his defense, according to multiple advanced stat models including RPM, RAPTOR, EPM, that is dominated by 7 footers, which models skew toward given the importance of blocks not only preventing buckets but leading to fast breaks, Caruso was in the 99 percentile among all players for regular season. In the bubble playoffs, he rated as the 2nd best overall defender behind AD. In estimation, the Lakers would have had to pay an extra 30-40 million dollar luxury tax bill to sign him, of course in addition to his would-be contract. I’m not in a position to evaluate the owners books but letting him go was a mistake if you wanted to win another chip. He was that good.
