The cassette Walt finds in the car he steals in the opening moments is a Marty Robbins cassette, containing the well-known country song “El Paso”-in which the hero meets a girl named Felina. @Red Sparrow - That's the point. He becomes a bad guy, but a very realistic one, he is still understandable and relatable, and has some good traits. The point is that no person is totally bad, but you can become very bad by doing a lot of despicable actions and harming tons of people if you make certain decisions and feed the greedy, self-centered part of yourself. The typical villain in the movies is someone who has been entangled for long in this kind of bad scenarios, which develop after bad decissions, and has gotten cold-hearted, and become used to murder/lie and similar stuff. It's very interesting to be able to witness the whole process and the actions that take a normal family man to become such a horrible drug lord. One can even observe where he could have gotten out and why he didn't, until his end.

@jesuschrist54175 жыл бұрын
@Honk Honk I agree somewhat with what you're saying. I hate it when people call Walt and Heisenberg two different people, because I feel like the point of the show is to show a gradual transformation from a good guy to a bad guy, not for Walt to find a switch in himself to flip. In my opinion, Heisenberg was just his criminal name, and to go beyond that and say that he needs to inhabit this "Heisenberg" personality in order to do the crimes he's doing, takes responsibility away from the man himself, Walter White. I believe this is clearly shown by the fact that deep down he wants people to know what he's done. I wouldn't call it virtue signalling though in the context you responded to. He could just be saying the worst character in the sense that he thinks he's a badass. Even if he's saying it that way, I think talking about the morality of his actions is part of the potential commentary you could have about the character.

If you can do that, wake up everyday and try to make things better then maybe one day better becomes good enough. That's Walter White's ending, good enough. John Smith I don’t understand why walt gets as much hate as he does. Nearly every bad thing that happened was bad luck or an accident, that’s not to say he didn’t make stupid choices but he wasn’t to blame. Hank was way too angry when he found out. He had a right to be pissed but he seemed beyond furious. Jesse also overreacted. Both of them are just as much responsible for Hank’s death as Walt is. Walt didn’t know Hank and Gomez were the ones in the van until after he made the call, and he did everything in his power to call it off when he found out. Walt shouldn’t have taken Holly, but he found out that his son and wife hate him, plus he was beaten up. He wasn’t thinking straight and when he was he gave Holly back right away. Walt was just unlucky, his motives were almost always pure
@hamsterfromabove89055 жыл бұрын
Walter was a murderer. Walter poisoned a child. One thing to note was that Jesse's reaction was perfectly in character. Jesse was always shown to have a soft spot for children. First Jesse let himself get fully disowned to protect his little brother. Next Jesse goes to the house of two meth heads to demand payment (the atm incident). Risking his own life to do so, Jesse stayed long enough to make sure that Child Protective Services could help the little boy. Finally Jesse was shown developing a real connection with Andrea and Brock. When Jesse realized that Walter poisoned Brock it caused him to go a little insane. It doesn't matter that Walter didn't know who was in the car. Walter called for his hitmen to come and kill who ever came out of the car, that's a pretty fucked up thing to do. Walter stood over Jane before she died and chose to let her die, just so he could control Jesse. Saying that everything that happened was bad luck or an accident is being dishonest. Actions have consequences. Just because someone doesn't understand the consequences doesn't mean they aren't responsible.
@eliasgibson47435 жыл бұрын
John Smith Walter only ever murdered in self defense. He only killed when it was them or him. And he did poison Brock, but the tiny dosage just made him a little sick. He was perfectly fine and Walt planned that. Even though Jesse is soft for kids, he still overreacted. Keep in mind that Walt thought the people in the car were there to kill him when he made the call. He thought Jesse was tricked him into going somewhere remote so he could kill him. Calling hitmen on someone trying to kill you is self defense. And Walt called Jack off the instant he realized what was really happening. It wasn’t Walt’s fault that Jack came anyway. Walter did stand over Jane but she needed to die. Not so he could control Jesse but because she was blackmailing Walt and probably would’ve sold him out to the police and she would’ve just killed herself and Jesse later anyway with drugs. Her dying of overdose was unavoidable. Walt just saved Jesse because he cares about him. Walt made some terrible choices but he was put into terrible positions. He always tried to do the right thing
@voteZDLR5 жыл бұрын
"Then do it yourself" I think Jesse MIGHT have shot Walt at that moment if he didn't see Walt was shot already. But he does see he got shot. And if you think about it, it's the metaphor behind the entire series, but the cancer didn't kill Walt. Gus didn't kill Walt. Hank didn't kill Walt. Walt killed Walt. He literally died accidentally by his own machinations.
@Bluebelle514 жыл бұрын

@@Bluebelle51 No of course not, but I do think he was planning on killing Jesse, too. But only because he believed the Nazis reneged on on their deal, and instead of killing him (for ruining everything for him and his family) they "partnered" with him. Only upon seeing him did he realize "Oh this isn't a partnership at all. This is slavery."
@Bluebelle514 жыл бұрын

@voteZDLR4 жыл бұрын
@Kyle Whitehead No, he was planning on killing Jesse. When he lets Badger and Skinny Pete out of his car (and tells them to give the laser pens back -- right after he threatens Elliot And Gretchen Schwartz) he basically asks if they've seen any blue meth around lately and they say "Yes, it's as good as ever too!" and then Walt asks them "Who is cooking it?" and they're like "Uh, we thought you were? Again, it's as good as it's ever been." and then immediately he knows it's Jesse. The first thing that enters his mind is they reneged on the deal and decided NOT to kill Jesse but to instead become partners with him instead. The entire time up until he sees Jesse in shackles he believes that both Jesse and the Nazis betrayed him, but seeing him in such a bad state is when he realizes "They've been keeping my boy here, my second son, and FORCING him to cook." so in that instant is when he changes the plan and instead decides to kill the Nazis alone, using his own body to shield Jesse from the bullets. He may not have gone with that plan at all if he intended for anyone in the room to survive. But he didn't want them to survive, hence the massive whirly gun. At the end of the day he loved his formula more than anything or anyone else. And the idea that it was still being made and profited from without him (and in fact being made by his protege, the only other person perhaps in the world who could make meth like he could -- Jesse) drove him mad.

Brian Gonigal: On September 7th, 1978 Georgi Markov, a Bulgarian writer was working for the BBC in London. He was a strong critic of the Bulgarian government. While waiting at the bus stop for the bus to take him to work, he felt a pain or sting on the back of his right thigh. He looked around and saw a man picking up an umbrella who crossed the street and got into a taxi. This came to be called the "Umbrella Murder". When he arrived at work, a red pimple had formed. That night he developed a fever and was admitted to the hospital where he died September 11th, he was 49. Because of the odd circumstances and statements Markov made suspecting he had been poisoned, he was autopsied and a metal pellet was found. The pellet was .067 inch's in diameter, 90% platinum and 10% iridium. With 2 .014 in holes drilled in to make a X-shaped cavity stuffed with ricin. (from Wikipedia)

@alexanderholzer73925 жыл бұрын
AFAIK M60 typically has tracer rounds, so it makes sense that the bullets would be lit up.
@sandercohen33095 жыл бұрын
They weren’t all tracers though. It was a pretty standard 4:1 ball to tracer ratio, as seen on the ammunition boxes in Walts trunk. There were 4 boxes, which is a total of 800 rounds. That means he had 160 M62 tracers and 640 M80 ball (which will rip through virtually every common Western building material, as proven in the Breaking Bad MythBusters episode) Doesn’t seem like he used all 800 rounds (because AFAIK he “only” had about 40 seconds of sustained fire) But it was still massive overkill in that situation. Those dudes would’ve died in real life as well. Guess Walt didn’t want to take any chances, lol.
@sandercohen33095 жыл бұрын
Another *INSANE* thing to think about: These tracer rounds contain red phosphorus, making it the 2nd time Walt uses red phosphorus to kill someone. He used it for his very first kill (Emilio) and his very last kills (those Nazi pricks) Haven't heard this mentioned anywhere, but I'm pretty sure it's true. Not sure if the creators actually thought about this, but if they did they are geniuses.

i thought it was funny. similar to his ringtone for walt “lydia oh lydia, have you met lydia? lydia’s a lovely lady”
@AlmightyDude4205 жыл бұрын
It's a song from one of the Marx Brothers movies from the 1930s. I think it's the one where they go to the circus and they meet Lydia the tattooed lady

Walt's silent goodbye to his son kinda mirrors Mike's silent goodbye to his granddaughter in episode 507.

@@seedlesswatermelon417 Early Dexter was amazing. Nice dark comedy/drama. HBO's Barry feels like a homage to Dexter.

25:52 Still love how Walt just stands there for a second and watches Jesse strangle Todd. I remember the first time I watched this, as soon as that chain was around Todd's neck, I was on my feet!

After the 1st episode Steven said "I can't imagine where this seies goes from here." So, now that it's over, could you have even entertained the thought of where it ended up going?

Best written series on television, ever. In my opinion. So many shows could learn from "Breaking Bad". Clever writing, knowing its screentime and knowing when to quit.

He thought of everything. Even down to leaving his fingerprints on the equipment so the cops think he's the one that's been cooking for the past few weeks/ months. Bravo Vince! I recommend watching the video of the actors' script reading of the last episode on KZbin

Podcast Notes: Felina *CONTENT WARNING: ending ones own life, torture* This one is going to be long & broken up into several replies. Guests: Editor Skip Macdonald; co-exec producer Melissa Bernstein 1. Vince wrote & directed this one 2. When did they know Walt was going to die? Vince can’t remember, but they pitched everything to the network 8 weeks after they started writing season 5b 3. In that pitch, Skyler was possibly going to end her own life-around ep 14, Walt would walk in on her in the bathtub. Their colleagues said “please don’t let him do that!” Another option was she left with Walt & the disappearer, but they didn’t think she’d leave junior & knew he wouldn’t go 4. Before they shot season 1, Vince pitched a scene where Jesse was killed & Walt was so filled with rage & out for revenge against this kingpin (not a character who ended up on the show). Walt got the guy & chloroformed him & shackled him in a basement, set up a rifle across the room with a trip wire that the guy can trip himself...Walt started removing bits and pieces from the guy every day...the guy was such a badass he wouldn’t kill himself...it goes weeks, and he’s missing like up above his knees. Junior was going to somehow stumble across this guy & lean in to try to help him (give him water or something). The guy’s eyes opened & he somehow realized he’s Walt’s son, pulled the trip line, & killed both of them! everyone he pitched this to was horrified 😂 5. He doesn’t undo all the damage or atone for all his sins - there’s too many - but given the limited way he could make good, he does 6. Vince thinks Gretchen & Eliot will follow through & Jesse got away

7. In 5x01, did you know what he’d do with the weapon he bought in the teaser? No, they’d talked through many options, but they said “it has to be something cool; we’ll figure it out later.” They didn’t have uncle jack or Kenny or Todd dreamt up yet; having the m60 helped them come up with those characters 8. They suspected in the writers room that he always at the back of his mind, though he didn’t want to get caught, wanted to be known as Jesse James & get credit for everything he did 9. As much as they made the show brick by brick, they still had to know essentially the endgame and talk about it early in between planning other episodes. They’d talked about him having a new wife, cooking (like, gourmet cooking - they had a scene of him making peanut brittle in which you can tell by how precise he is that he misses producing meth), that the Volvo in 5x01 was legit his, that he was teaching somewhere, etc. but they feel really good about what they ultimately landed on 10. The thing Vince thinks they did best was to mine their own history - e.g. “Tio gave Gus a little look from his wheelchair in season 3. I wonder what that was about?” 11. Why Felina? The song at the open in the car, El Paso by Marty Robins - in the lyrics, the cowboy is in love with Wicked Felina. He kills a man for her, flees town, then rides back into town on a horse bc his love for her is greater than his fear of death. He ends up dying. Marty Robins spelled it differently, but Felina is an anagram for Finale, so they changed it 12. The house that was used for Gretchen & Eliot in s1 (iirc) was no longer available as that neighborhood had changed its rules so no filming could be done there. It worked with the story that they’d gained even more wealth & upgraded, so they found this incredible home

13. The conversation Gretchen & Eliot have as they walked into & through the House was partially invented by the two actors on set as the house was larger than the written dialogue would fill. 14. Todd’s Lydia oh Lydia ringtone! (Ok this is from me - It’s the original by Groucho Marx that Alpha sings to Lydia!) Insert with Aaron: 15. Aaron went to Bryan’s house and they read the final script together. They read the teaser silently & then discussed it, then read the rest out loud, each of them taking certain characters. At the end, they looked at each other, both teary-eyed, and just stared for about 15 seconds, not knowing what to say 16. It’s almost good Jesse didn’t get away scot-free...hopefully this will have changed him. 17. Aaron got the box Jesse made, his Cap’n license plate, a Heisenberg hat, and Vince promised him the burnt pink teddy bear Back to regular podcast: 18. They had Chief running away at the end of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest when they wrote Jesse running away
