The Sherman is grittier, I believe? I’ve seen a video with the maker; looked like he makes them in the sunhouse (or similar), attached to the back of his place … big ‘outdoor’ area, crammed with gear … ☺️. Nice space to work in … sure beats a fluorescent-lit office …

The Italian Siel DK70 (1985), German Wersi Stage Performer MK1 SII (1986) synthesizers as well as the Oberheim DPX-1 Sample Player (1987) all used the SSM2045. VCA/VCF chips. The most famous device was maybe the E-Mu Emulator II (1984) which was used by pretty much everyone. It was a very popular chip back in the day and quite available, so a lot of DIY builders used them. I listened to the sound demos for the Mutator. It sounds very nice.

I am looking forward to the "BB" Mutator! Exciting to think what innovations they may include in this incarnation. Also, I love the idea of Behringer teaming up with the original designer/builder, Nigel Bradbury. Seems like almost every day Team Uli is announcing more fantastic news! And the anticipated delivery date of my pre-ordered Syncussion SY-1 has moved from end of November to end of August this year! Boom!💥 Happy days! I'm hoping that means the Linn Drum may be available for pre-order this side of Christmas! 🎉

@synthsamuraiproductions
@synthsamuraiproductions 12 күн бұрын
@hanzvolt Little-known fact: Contrary to the information given by the Mutronics website, the Mutator was conceived, designed, and the first production runs hand-built and tested by a British guy called Nigel Bradbury who started Mutronics with London-based studio-owner Mark Lusardi in the mid 1990s. With his partner and their new-born daughter remaining in their home-town of Oxford, Nigel worked on the Mutator in London for £50 a week, almost all of which was taken up by the rent for his grimy week-day accommodation and bus transport back home at the weekends. Eventually it became uneconomic and uncomfortable for him to continue spending so much time away from his family, and Nigel parted company with Mutronics with nothing but a second-hand Mutator (previously owned by Duran Duran, no less) to show for his hard work and creativity. His part in conceiving and creating what is probably the best analog filter unit available remains unmentioned on the Mutronics website and promotional materials, and some people feel he was unfairly treated by his business partners. To this day he refuses to discuss this period of his life. Nigel currently designs medical electronic equipment in Oxfordshire."

I had a Mutator back in the 90's. It was cool, but nothing really all that special. It was a filter and it filtered the lows, mids and highs. Didn't have a particular sound that made it stand out one way or another to the plethora of filters out in the late 90's/early 2000's. I thought my Frostwave Resonator kicked it's ass. The thing that made it special was it's stereo ins and outs. But other than that, ho-hum.

Why wouldn’t a synth player buy one?! If it ends up anything like the original Mutator, it will sound LUSH. Guitar players do seem/tend to know more about analog/vintage FX, in my experience … Mind you, I suppose most modern guitarists don’t really know what those old units sounded like, these days … Those older units all tended to have real CHARACTER; which I will take, over a relatively sterile sound with a bunch of ‘bells and whistles’, any day.
