Oh I see the potential! I’ve watched his highlights. Unreal! Athletically he’s a beast. His size, speed, and agility are not gonna be an issue. Although similar, they are 2 different sports. Can his Rugby IQ and instincts translate into American football. He’s young though so he’ll have time to develop those instincts and IQ. I can already picture him bursting through a hole, turning on the burners, and taking it to the house for 70 yard touchdown run. “Oh My! He’s leaving everyone in dust! Touchdown! LRZ to the House!”. @@gmoney8399 Honestly, it makes me think about some of the guys I grew up watching and how they would have fared in the NFL(most of them are retired now). Simon Zebo used to somersault over guys to catch high balls in traffic with a crazy vertical leap, George North could’ve been an amazing full back with his speed, size and raw power, Quade Cooper could throw like a QB and could land the ball on a penny. Talking of which, everyone is talking about LRZ at WR/RB, but what about an old-fashioned style full back? He’s strong, he can tackle really well, and set up plays with lateral passes and bursts of speed.

@@TheArgonaut90 I’ve visited England a couple times and went to several Professional Rugby matches…. and I can tell you 100% without a doubt there are pro rugby players that would ABSOLUTELY be playing in the NFL had they been born and raised over here. I played High School football (I believe what you guys would call secondary school) with 2 guys that made it to the NFL. They weren’t stars, but they were good. They played multiple seasons and got a lot of playing time. One was a real close friend of mine… He started at middle linebacker for the Oakland Raiders for a season. The other one got a Superbowl ring with Tom Brady and the Patriots……And some of the Rugby players I watched play were just as big and athletic as my buddies. But we start playing American Football at six years old. You guys got some beasts over there. But we just have so much more time to develop our football IQ and football instincts. But in regard to your question, NFL teams don’t really use old-fashioned Fullbacks anymore. The position is almost extinct. But in the past, Fullbacks were mostly used just for blocking. They didn’t get the ball very much. They just blocked for the RB. And they were typically around 6 feet tall and 250+ pounds. I know lol we don’t use the metric system. They were shorter and much stockier than Louis. NFL teams in this era would rather have an extra RB, WR, or TE on the field. They are definitely going to try him as a RB, WR, and kick returner. He has great size and speed for those positions. He’s too talented and dangerous with the ball in his hands to be heavily utilized as a blocker. But I’m sure the first playing time he will see will be as a kick returner. That’s something he could be great at right away. Kick returning is something that will come completely naturally to him right away as a Rugby player. And like I said he’s too talented and dangerous with the ball in his hands to play defense. So he won’t be doing any tackling besides maybe Special teams. He’s gonna be juking guys out of their shoes or lowering his shoulder and steam rolling dudes with the ball in his hands. I have heard his Dad was a Huge American football fan and so is Louis….so I assume he watched quite a bit of the NFL as a kid, and probably played some for fun as a kid….so his football instincts and IQ might be more developed than most people would think.

Biggest difference with LRZ, although he wasn't the best on the international rugby stage, he has however performed at a far greater level than any of his rugby predecessors that transferred to the NFL.

There are two rugby skills the NFL could adopt, depending on the risk profile deemed acceptable: off loading in the tackle and passing. High risk, high reward, extremely entertaining.... it will be extremely difficult to defend and will probably change the way the game is played. Getting players when to know when to pass/lateral OR NOT is going to be paramount... if they do adopt any of the above. Apart from that he's a great signing because of the amount of attention that comes with him. If you're wanting to build your brand internationally you might as well be smart about it.

Couldn’t agree more. Off load in the tackle and passing (left and right) out of both hands, and at speed in a controlled manner comes as second nature to him. He would have been doing it day in day out for 15 plus years. That’s without mentioning the blind offload passes they can do … Given the chance, he will be able to introduce the passing and offload game to American football, with new (fluid) running moves. NB top class rugby players rarely drop or miss pass a ball.

Dude was training in the IMG Academy IPP training facility 10 week crash course before the combine, with all the modern NFL training gear - laser timing/GPS tracking vests, etc. If he said he expected 4.2-4.3, then that comes from a real place, not a hand-time on a stopwatch.

Very good doc, and shows how their training is designed to be as close to modern NFL training camps as possible to prepare these guys for what’s ahead. Ex-pro and collegiate position coaches, ex-players, drills, training equipment/regimen, and getting used to the techniques and volume required of film study. It’s pretty impressive to see what living it 24/7 for just 10 weeks can do, but obviously, all these guys are very promising raw athletic talents to begin with.

Rugby players rarely drop kick returns. There is a lot of kicking in rugby and fumbling along kicks carried a lot of jeopardy. Rugby players get a lot of practice catching. Welsh international as was a top player for us at 20.

I played in a gridiron team with his dad in Cardiff back in the 80's and we all loved the sport. My only problem now is that I am a packers fan so I might have to switch to being a Chiefs fan! Several win-wins with this signing for Chiefs.. LRZ isn't just a random athlete from Europe who would have to learn the game from scratch. He's several steps ahead of other guys in the International Player Pathway as his dad played Football (admittedly at a very low level in UK)so there's already a passion and he will understand the game and watched it over the years. His rugby background gives him the ability to make fast plays and not be phased by making big hits on big men travelling at speed and he'll also be used to getting those big hit tackles back on him. His catching and passing game, kicking from the hand while running at full speed game, his ability to look for and create space on the field is a skillet he already has. He isn't just a good rugby player who was good enough to play for his country, he was p8cked to represent the combined players from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales as part of the British Lions team that played against South Africa.... his signing is creating a lot of new interest in the game from UK and will hopefully be more than just a European athlete brought in to take field goals then leave the field. Will be exciting to watch...

the difference between all the IPP players until now and LRZ is he is literally one of the top players in the world in his position in rugby RIGHT NOW. for his country he would be the first name on the team sheet, we have a sort of all star team that tours the southern hemisphere and he'd be in that. I hope his skills translate into the NFL and he gets on to the active roster because honestly give him 18 months and he should be coming to his physical peak which would be a scary prospect.

LZR scored 42 tries in 77 matches for gloucester (a crappy team) + about the same strike rate internationally 14 in 32 matches for a bad welsh team... pretty much the same strike rate as Lowe and Hansen in the best Irish team ever. on top of this he was the youngest person selected for the lions in literally 70 odd years and he's only just turned 23... honestly you can say that he's not one of the top rugby stars but objectively he is. hitting a strike rate of approximately one try per two matches in a great team is good... in 2 bad teams its incredible

Zammit played as a winger in Rugby and therefore did not participate in the scrum. I can see him doing well as a returner though because it’s the most similar to what he’s did in Rugby (just look at his rugby highlight and you’ll get it). Pass receiving; we’ll have to see on that; there’s no blocking in rugby and he almost never had to get separation from another player or catch a ball over his shoulder. I think he’ll need to develop before he really makes it in the nfl. 👍

6.3 210 now. Put on 20 pounds in IPP. Honestly guys he had a shocking pro day. Been running 4.2s and 4.3S in the IPP. Was very upset. Used to played against guys who that can run 10.7/8 and leaves them standing. Clocked at. 24mph on field. Obviously no pads and helmet

Some positions are more skill-reliant while others are more instinctual/reliant on athleticism. He's currently listed as a running back; I assume they're mostly looking at him as a returner with the league's completely new kickoff rules. i don't know much of anything about rugby so don't know if these new rules are something a rugby player can take advantage of. The NFL basically just stole the idea from the XFL, so kickoffs will ook like this next season: kzbin.info3gR5Q2ZkFGI Special teams is how a lot of players get their foot in the door making the 53-man roster. It would be cool if he could work his way into being a regular part of the offense, but that's a very hard mountain to climb. He has his work cut out for him.

In training and all those things his numbers are going to look good. the biggest caveat here is can he do it a helmet and pads on in the real thick of the game. Most NFL pros have been trainiing wit this gear on since they were kids. His numbers can look as impressive all ya want but if he does not have that ability with all the gear on he isnt going to get there..... I really do want to see him do it i must admit

He weighed in at 209lb btw, not 195. I'm british and a rugby fan and I'm sceptical about crossovers because the demands of the 2 games are so different and the talent pool for the NFL is so big, but...... Christian Wade probably would've made it if Covid then and injury hadn't got in the way. He was 27 when he switched. LRZ is 23. So time is on his side. 2 things - you could do with a professional '2nd division'. It would be so much easier to switch. I know the point of the NFL is that it's unique but you have enough players, spectators and money to have a very high calibre 2nd division nearly NFL standard which is where converts from a game like rugby could learn. 2nd, if he does make the roster I really hope Travis kelce tries more of those rugby dummies he did, and maybe even a pass. Kelce watches rugby and I know where he got the idea for it from. He got a touchdown off it. If you import rugby players someone will do it at some stage and I think it will change the NFL when they do.

@user-ki9um4ju9d problem is no professional rugby player would give up their salary to join a college football program and the gap between div 1 college and the NFL is massive. Think more like the English championship in soccer.. Salaries can be £1million, crowds are 20,000+. Players play their entire career in it without ever making.the premiership. The issue is the best teams in the championship get promoted to the premiership (and the worst teams in the prem.get relegated to the championship) and that's what teams in a theoretical NFL 2nd division or dev league would want to happen. 'Hey we won this league 3 seasons running. We want a chance to be an NFL team now' etc Unless they were owned by the NFL franchises and it was just a pure development league.

NFL teams rely heavily on players playing on rookie contracts to keep costs under the salary cap.. I don't see a universe where sports leagues here adopt a promotion/relegation system, although I think a lot of fans would like it. If I could have it my way, we'd basically do what you describe. College athletics is basically unrecognizable to me as a fan these days with conference realignment and the new NCAA rules.

He will be in the practice squad 1st year and hopefully the following year get a shot in the NFL. If he doesnt make NFL by the second year he will be back playing International Rugby for Wales as they could have used him this year, after finishing last in the 2024 6 Nations tournament.

It could really expand the Global popularity of American football. Only question is can he translate his rugby instincts into football instincts. I actually really hope he's mentored by Travis, the best tight end in the NFL!!!! Trav would be a great mentor & teacher, teaching him how to run routes & also helping him to learn how to get open!!!! I hope he is in the tight end room!!!! ( Obviously, he could still play various offensive positions!!!) But Trav mentored Rashee Rice, not Pat actually. Though Pat has to & all the more had to work with all the receivers!!!! But learning under Travis, he'd be learning from the best tight end & Andy is a genius when it comes to the how to use the tight end position!!!

No pads and no helmet are a different animal too. He's been playing without at a high level for nearly a decade. And don't tell me Rugby is soft, it isn't. Wide receivers are so well protected compared to previous decades, he won't see anything he hasn't seen before. I think Travis might have someone he can safely lateral to though.
