Agreed! I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one to see this masterpiece of a season. Even some of the visual story telling when it comes to white balance is amazing this season. We went from almost green warm light to gradually shifting to white clean light and now this season we have it in the opposite direction. The white light has turned blue and cold. It makes you feel alone and almost beat down by the intensity of the lights of the kitchen.

@@TheAtomicVisionShow You saw a lot of things I saw too -- but the way you describe each episode and referred to the places that add up to Carmy "just not getting it" really helped me to see the thru line and all the discordant things that actually DO work together! The Bear is a love letter to healing, in exactly the same way that it's a love letter to food: it's relently focused on how it's made. We're in the kitchen watching the chefs work, and we're following the crew watching how they heal. The show honours the work and the process.

Another thing people seem to complain about is the overuse of the Faks. The Faks may be discounted as mere comic relief but after seeing your analysis it is clear that the Faks embody the relationship and culture of love and care. Even when they are haunting each other they are together and a family. And even if they are not mature in the traditional sense that are more emotionally mature than Carmy

@@pistachiohno0613 yes that is a complaint that my mind won't be changed on. The Faks were way too much, a bit overused, their scenes went on at least a minute too long, the John Cena as a Fak brother cameo was silly (and I LOVED Fishes, so I'm clearly used to The Bear's use of guest stars, but this one just didn't work for me).

Perfect! Your Episode breakdown helped me to appreciate season 3 even more. And yes, Napkins is the best episode in this season. And I have to say, after seeing Napkins, I really like to see a prequel series on how Mikey and Richie take over The Beef from Mikeys’s dad.

Thank you! This breakdown was so well done. The Bear is my favorite show. I was frustrated with S3 after such an uplifting S2. But you helped me see what it is...a pause and a playbook for healing. Those contrasts you pointed out were significant: love versus anger, compassion versus judgment/criticism, and avoiding perpetuating the wounds and scars inflicted on us onto others. You helped cast S3 in a different light for me. I don't plan to repeat S3 as often as I did S2, but I'm reminded every season counts 😊

I am so happy that someone put my feelings about S3 into words. I just loved the season, as I began to cuss out Carmy for not realizing what the fuck he was doing to HIS place, for which he worked a long time, for which he bled and cried. I am so psyched for S4 to just show us how he is gonna see his mistakes and what he is going to have to do to earn the trust and loyalty of his people back. I loved Sydney's and Richie's arks, they were just incredibly awesome. They've all come so far from S1.

Another brilliant breakdown. I agree 100% to everything you said. In my opinion, the reason so many people don’t like the third season are the unresolved issues between Carmy and Sidney, Carmy and Richie, Carmy and Claire and Carmy and Carmy, cause in a sense he is still stuck in this cold store and is haunted by the ghost of Chef David (Joel McHale). And as we all know, „haunting“ is one of the central themes of season 3. And because Carmy is stuck and miserable, all the others are stuck and miserable. So in a sense, on his hunt of perfection, Carmy is the main antagonist in this season. And that’s a very bold story choice by Showrunner Chris Storer, for which I salute him. So, did I like season 3 as much as season 1 and 2? Probably not. That said I still love every single episode, because, there is a lot to love. And arguing, that nothing happens in this season is utter nonsense. Some episodes may not be that exiting like in season 1 and 2. I get that. But the „Avengers Assemble“ phase is behind us. Now Sidney, Richie, Marcus, Tina and the rest have to grow as a team. And exactly that moment of triumph is what Chris Storer is denying us in Season 3. But hope is already planted in the last episode. And that’s why I’m more than exited for season 4, cause I trust the Christopher Storer as a storyteller. From the perspective of the Hero’s journey season 1 of The Bear was all about establishing THE ORDINARY WORLD and to gather new companions. At the end of season 1, when Carmy found the money, we finally got the CALL OF ADVENTURE. So LET IT RIP! Season 2 was all about purpose, change and developing new skills. Remember the moment when Tina is in culinary school and looking at Carmy’s knife in her hand, smiling proudly, like it is a katana. “Let’s do this!”. The zoom in on her was straight out of a samurai movie. Same with Richie and his new (earned) suit: “feels like armor!”. And, not to forget, Marcus in Copenhagen. Season 2 is all about getting new skills and getting ready to rumble. It’s basically a big training montage. Because in the end of season 2 everybody is ready for CROSSING THE THRESHHOLD into new territory and „fight“. So Season 3 is all about the metaphorical fighting the way trough THE DARK FOREST. And it doesn’t look good, cause Carmy, as the leader of the pack, is haunted and stuck. And when we reach episode 9 (Apologies), EVERYTHING IS LOST. Mainly cause Carmy is no longer the beacon of hope, change and progress. But hope is around the corner, cause in episode 10 (Forever) he finally confronts his personal demon - Chef David. It’s the central turning point which is brilliantly analysed in this breakdown. And than there is his talk with chef Terry. So, if I’m right with this Heros Journey theory, season 4 will be all about “rebirth, atonement and return to the status quo”. In the end, there will be some kind award for Camry (Claire?) and elixir (maybe the insight, that “Every Second Counts” is not only a mantra for workin in a kitchen, but for life in general. By the way, a lesson Richie already learned in FORKS. That’s why this episode is universal loved by everyone. Richie already made the change, that Carmy has yet to make. Through out season 3, Carmy is a lost soul and has to realize that it’s not perfection, nor a Michelin Star whats important, but the people you serve and of corse, the people he works with. So, in a sense, he has to get rid of the ghost of Chef David and has to let the spirit of his brother Mikey and the joy The Beef back into his life and his restaurant. And to a degree, this is already is planted. Remember what joy Ebra experienced, when he is working with his old crew again? Cause like Natalie said, the Beef sandwiches are the only thing, that makes some steady money. By the way, my favorite episode in S3 is of course Napkins (with Ice Chips at a close 2nd). Tinas Story is so wonderful and uplifting and her talk with Mikey is so moving, that I suddenly felt this urge to see more of Mikey and his struggles and joys with The Beef. Maybe there is a prequel series in there somehow.

I know it's easy to take anything that people are as a flaw and say "but that's the point!" But I can't bring myself to hold it against the show that it doesn't just give me what I want. The first episode set that up. It established from the get go a lack of forward momentum. I craved that forward momentum. I wanted story. I wanted resolution. And the show told me to relax, take a breath. This is a tasting. Not À la carte. It's delicate. Balanced. Precise. If you want to order off the menu, McDonald's is open 24/7. If you want to try this, have some of this. It's what we got I never got past my craving for. Plot and resolution. But I was able to deal with that feeling and just enjoy what I was served. That, in and if itself, was a pleasant experience, and I think undervalued

Yes! Thank you for your review. It is nice to find someone who interpreted the season as it was intended, or at least how I think it was intended. The bear was never being primarily about cooking and skill, it was about internal personal journey, being carmy's the main one. I think this was established in the first scene of the series when Carmy is faced by a caged bear which can be the seen as the internal strugle that he has represed inside himself. This season is the set up for the resolution of those internal conflicts and that is why it feel that it is not resolved, ans the show should end with him being at peace with himself and the making up with his main relationships.

The one thing I've noticed no one talking about is how the series reflects irl restaurants when a new chef/owner takes over an existing restaurant. This third season felt pretentious for the sake of being pretentious the same way that fine dining establishments do. The direction they are going with the story is pretty clear and will leave the fans with a very satisfied feeling in the end the way any good meal should. Great video and great insights.

Glad you mentioned it. The pretentiousness of "The Bear restaurant" is extremely on point, so it only makes sense that the season itself acknowledges this...by being a bit more pretentious thematically. Thank you so much.

Thank god for you truly seeing season 3 for the beauty that it is... I was getting so frustrated by the general review saying "This is the worse season" or "Has The Bear become too mainstream?" and all that BS. IMO this season was brilliant in its roll out of episodes, where it felt like we all were healing with Syd, Ritchie, Natalie, Marcus, basically everyone except Carmy. Looking forward to the next season where we dont know if Carmy spirals or he actually starts reflecting on his actions..

In the vacuum of a single season of television (released all at once, mind you) I could see how season 3 comes off as stagnant, but I think it's a brilliant and forward-thinking decision for the overall story. Whatever happens in the show going forward, it was necessary to see the day in, day out struggle of running a top end restaurant, pushing for accolades, and most of all, to depict the burnout that comes from even just a single month of this shit. Barry and Succession both have entire seasons where the leads are stuck in a toxic cycle, and people love those seasons in hindsight, because 2 or 3 episodes of something just doesn't feel all that bad, even when it's meant to convey months in-universe. I think the first episode in particular is really genius, Carmen had some great monologues in Season 1 and 2, but it goes against his character for him to be someone who talks about his feelings, especially at this point in his arc. It's a lot more effective for us to see what's going through his head while he's making pasta or cutting onions by himself before anyone else comes in at the restaurant. The only thing that kind of sucked was the abundance of guest chefs, they're clearly very proud of the response they've been getting from the hospitality industry, but so much time in the last episode is spent fawning over Will Guidara and Grant Achatz like it's an episode of Mind of a Chef that the 3 pivotal characters, Terry, Carmy, and David, really only have like 5 minutes of interaction. It also read like a bit of PR, I'm not the type to demonize the literal best restaurants in the world for letting people work there for free if they ASK to do that, but I know for a fact that Daniel Boulud is not that pleasant when he's teaching.

Great write-up. I get your feeling about the "real-life chefs", but at least they served a purpose, ultimately. Thank you so much watching/commenting like this. I really appreicate it.

My problem with this season is that all of the deep themes and hidden meanings you talked about could have still been explored while still resolving plot lines that were left hanging. No one really made any decisions in this seasons, and they could have! I don't need to see five or ten seperate scenes of a calm kitchen to know The Bear is disfunctional. Or Sydney struggling with making a decision for half or more of the season. Set up - Reminder - Payoff This season had set up. With the review, Sydney's decision, Carmy apologizing and getting a hold on himself and a lot more. This season had SO MANY reminders! We constantly recieve the same information without any meaningful additions. but no payoff, and it could have! It had time and didn't use it efficiently. We could have had payoff for things set up in this season and then have them deal with the ramifications of their decisions in the next season but I feel they didn't have too much story left to tell but they had a 4th season they felt obligated to make. The other two seasons were properly paced. Not this one, unfortunately. That's what hurts my viewing enjoyment. Not lack of deep meaning. Great video though, very insightful!

While ice chips seems to be one of the the best episodes of the season to some people, I myself was kinda sleepy. I think it's a bit too loong. cutting 5 to 10 minutes of the hospital scenes would still bring a homerun with the climax scene of Nat & Dona loving each other again with that "baby I love you" song.

Around minute two, you mention that Carmy uses the anger fueled by Chef David’s hateful remarks to make himself a better chef. This is definitely true, but you then proceeded to play the clip of Carmy talking about wanting to “make him proud”, to make him say good job. but the “him” that Carmine is referring to in that therapeutic speech is his brother, Michael, not Chef David. It’s important not to conflate these two, because it was always his brother whose approval he was seeking. Chef David was mostly his abuser. *edited for spelling & accurate word choice

You're comepletely right and I'm glad someone caught that, sincerely, thank you. The reason I edited that scene into this video came down to the realization as to why Carmy wants to impress Chef David. In the clip, he is referring to Mikey, saying that all he wanted was some support from his big brother. So, that's why Carmy went out into the world to study/learn to cook, to "prove Mikey wrong". And that fixation slowly moved to a new target. David, Carmy's mentor/boss at his NYC job. He wants to impress both of them, equally, as if they were the same person, and now that Mikey is sadly gone, Carmy's last place for "validation"...fell into David's lap. And we all saw how that ended, this season.

I appreciate your analysis and I actually got all of this. That’s doesn’t mean it was well executed or entertaining which is the main thing this show excelled at in the past. These points made this season were amazing but the awful way it was portrayed made many so disappointed

I couldn’t stop watching season 1 and 2, I stopped watching after episode 4 of season 3. It’s not that nothing happened , it’s just the emotions expressed in a scene are always tuned up to a 1000, never subtle in its movement Also the character is a terrible chef, a Michelin star chef doesn’t create a menu that changes every day, a great chef doesn’t mess around like that surely . I dunno, I guess I’m one of those negative bastards, and I’m willing to give season 4 a shot, but for me, we’ve been stuck in carmy having a mental breakdown for 3 seasons and I’m a bit bored
