As someone in a relationship who also went to an HBCU, it is extremely awkward to navigate homecoming with your partner and be around everyone from your past. HBCUs are small, everyone is like family, and your college friend group most likely includes people from your past. It doesn’t mean anything inappropriate going on, but at HBCU homecomings, you will be around or with people you had prior dealings with. And it can be very awkward because they’re going to be everywhere. The experience is about reconnecting with people but it’s hard to understand from the outside looking in. I will say, it’s probably easier for men. As a woman, getting into parties and clubs can be very difficult if you have a man with you (friend or your man) especially if he didn’t go to the school or have connections.

Incredible episode!! You all are incredible men thank thank you for putting these perspectives out. It cannot be understated how important it is for men like you to be stating these behaviors so that this doesn’t get read as weakness or less masculine SOLELY because it’s not seen enough. You all are the best

42:52 was deep. It's a a factor that has been set by society standards of what's the traits of a man so a lot of us men strive to be providers, care givers, etc before we're even out of adolescence.

I am a single mom raising a black boy. Why don't you come up with a mentorship coaching program for black youth in LA? I have been searching, but I can't find what my son really needs.

When ur Greek at homecoming .. u are so deep into catching up with ppl and a lot of stuff is going on… It’s too much to bring ya partner and have to explain every discussion or person etc. If you trust each other it doesn’t matter….some ppl have other intentions but if ur faithful it’s not that serious.

I think your partner may feel left out during the hbcu homecoming unless she brings a homegirl…there are a lot of conversations that would be at that are specific to the hbcu experience especially Greek life

I think most relationships don’t last because like Duke said they dk each other. There a saying that it takes about 1-3 year to learn your partner fully. Throw a baby in there and it harder. I agree with being a good guy even with it challenges can be hearing the gratification from people feels goods. Great episodes 💯

Imagine those moments when as a man, you are in full blown anger, or full blown hurt feelings…are you guys able to take criticism in that moment? :)

If things reach a full blown issue, it’s not that issue in that moment…that represents a bigger problem because it never should get to a full blown issue, major communication problem and lack of Emotional Intelligence.

@ Ok. My comment was more so about them discussing if it was helpful to correct their women in the middle of her being “emotional”. Men also have emotional moments, but I think it can be easy to forget that, and imagine what they may not appreciate in the middle of their own emotions. It can be tricky trying to teach each other while emotions are high on either end.

Prior to me having my son I never understood why relationships end after the baby. But now that I have actually been through it, I can honestly say for me postpartum depression was a huge deal in my situation. And a lot of times men don’t know what to do or how they can assist the mother while going through postpartum depression. It’s a lot to deal with as a man. We all hear the sad stories about babies being left at trash cans or babies are being killed by the parents, well that’s postpartum depression. It’s just a lot to deal with and men are leaving rightfully so!

It’s hard to accept the “rightfully so” portion of your statement because if you decide to take the risk of getting someone pregnant, you run the risk of experiencing your partner go through the worse because of pregnancy. It’s unfair for a man to check out just because he doesn’t want to deal with that part of his responsibility. If he doesn’t know how to lead her through the postpartum he needs to get therapy, find community, pray/find a connection with a higher source SOMETHING!!! If he’s tried all that and he’s still miserable then fine… atleast he tried.
