Isn't that just the beauty of hybrids, Petra? They can truly surprise us and make us question everything we thought we knew. 💚🌱

Aloha Memo, Thanks for another interesting & informative video. Spot on & helpful. 1) I have a Patricia X, and the X? kinda drives me crazy, cause I’ll never know what the cross is, haha. 2) I have 3 different Splendid’s that are all a little different, & 2 different Glorious’s that are a bit different too. 3) I have a couple of Philodendron NOID’s, drive me crazy too, (not knowing ID) 4) I scored a beautiful Philodendron SP Esmeraldas that goes by 2 or 3 different SP names………. It all really shouldn’t matter to me because I’m not OCD. I’m very ADHD & will forget all these silly details, before I even finish this post, LOL….. PS: Your New Conservatorium is looking Grand!!!!!! Blessings & Much Aloha!!!!!!

Thanks, Al! 😁 It seems like the mystery of hybrids and their parentage is both fascinating and a little frustrating, isn't it? And, I'm glad you like the new conservatorium!

Thank you as always Memo for an informative video, often wondered about some of the points you mentioned and now I know 😊 I appear to be on a serious Anthurium fixation at the moment can’t help myself lol, all of them being hybrid’s mainly because of what you said about them allegedly being hardier than the true form. I have a king and queen which we’re doing great when I got them but really struggling now.I hate seeing them that way so decided that would try some hybrids, only one of my new babies is of royal parentage so to speak the others are crosses of some of the most beautiful Anthurium out there (in my eyes anyway). I have actually just purchased a very young seedling of a Papi x Papi fort Sherman x veitchii and very much looking forward to watching that particular one grow, and of course the others am excited about as well.

Thank you for your kind words, Kathy! 🌱😊 I'm so excited for your journey with your new Anthurium hybrids. They truly can be fascinating and rewarding to watch grow. Your young seedling sounds like it's going to be an interesting one!

Hey thx for the interesting video! One thing i wanted to say is that i really dont like how everyone, and you are certainly not the only one, seem to point out that hybrids have 'ALL THE GOOD TRAITS' when i would argue many hybrids don't, but the ones that do are the ones that are selected from out of all the seedlings, given a name etc. Anyway the world of horticulture has been hybridizing plants since forever but from a conservation perspective i would much prefer it if only people who know what they are doing create hybrids. Like you mentioned i much prefer knowing what i have, preferably the species in almost all cases. I think it is a little sad people aren't more focused on pollinating the plants with pollen from the same species to keep diversity up, possibly creating hardier plants/cultivars rather than hybrids. Sexual recombination is all that is needed for a chance at that fabled "vigor". I do have some bromeliad and anthurium seedlings coming up that i do not know the parentage of since i nicked the fruits from botanical gardens.😅 keep it up, cheers, DN

You got the fruits from what!? I hope you had their permission
@danielnewald4758
@danielnewald4758 Жыл бұрын
@@you_gullible_fucc they cant use them anyway since the parentage would be uncertain in botanical gardens bromeliads are mostly propagated asexualy, as are most aroids, you wouldn't want to accidently muddle the type specimens up by having cross polination after all so the fruits that pop up around the tropical greenhouse that are not inside protective netting are worthless to them

There is a difference if you flip parents. The mother donates more genes, half a set of chromosomes but also mitochondrial DNA. The father only half a set of chromosomes.

Thank you for your insight! I appreciate you bringing up the importance of mitochondrial DNA. The world of genetics is a fascinating one!

Intergeneric hybrids actually do exist!There are quite a few planty examples, including intergeneric orchid crosses and intergeneric cereal crop crosses (I.e. Hordeum x Triticum). The genera must be very closely related and intergeneric crosses are much more difficult to pull off successfully. With plants, you often have to be more involved in the crossing process and watch it every step of the way so if the cross starts to reject, you can perform embryo rescue in TC or something similar.

Cool video :-) OK, so female x male (hope that´s the correct one :-) ). "Splendid" is truly splendid, I only wish to have space for it :-) I recently saw this beautiful Ecuagenera´s verrucosum hybrid called "Amazon Sunset" - I wonder if it is less fussy than the original species or not.

The "Amazon Sunset" looks absolutely stunning, Sparkle! 😍 The best part about hybrids is that it's always a surprise to see how they'll turn out - sometimes they're fussier, sometimes they're hardier. Only time will tell!
