something so satisfying about the smooth graphite lines of that traditional pencil.
@steverudethedude3 ай бұрын
I agree. The tactile experience of drawing with a traditional pencil is truly satisfying. There's a level of control and precision that's hard to replicate with digital tools.

That's fantastic to hear! I'm glad you found the tutorial on breaking down Jack Kirby's comics helpful. Kirby was a true master of figure drawing, and his work is a great source of inspiration and study.

Great job doing those breakdowns..!! Yes, ...Jack was a genius... and Master Story-Teller...!! Wished you, Steve, were doing a few books on Jack's characters.... Like The Guardian, Sandman & Sandy, ... and maybe even the G.A. Manhunter... together. Thanks for what you're doing here...!!

I agree that Jack Kirby was a genius. His ability to create complex characters and compelling narratives was unparalleled. I'd love to delve deeper into characters like The Guardian and Sandman & Sandy. It would be a great opportunity to explore their origins and development.

I love how he can't help being anatomically correct all the time. There are some subtle things he quickly puts in there that are so telling... very different from the Kirby we all know and love, but still clearly influenced by him. So cool. Also, I'm going to run to the art store tomorrow and get me one of those Derwent pencils ;) Tools, man. So addictive.

I really enjoyed this study of Jack Kirby's figure drawing. I find his work endlessly fascinating and always captivating. My favorite work of his has to be the Eternals annual. I really wish there was more audio and video of him, but I've been fortunate enough to have seen his 11X17's and when I saw what he did there, my mind was absolutely blown. While I was younger I would over pass over Kirby not having the maturity or the eye to see what he put on the page. That all changed when I saw his pieces in person. Upon close inspection, I saw he was something akin to Picasso in how he rendered things, but was absolutely floored at "Kirby tech and architecture". There were some images that just didn't translate well into those little mass printed floppy comics, but when you see it in person you realize the genius necessary to pull some of these things out of his imagination that didn't exist, but were made to look like they absolutely coud. Whenever I hear stories from such amazingly talented artists / professionals such as yourself on what Jack could do.and his feats of artistic strength such as drawing straight on the page without constructions lines, or a few outlines, or never missing a deadine or working on 4 books at a time...I just admire the man so much more and feel incredibly inspired. Kirby's influence is still alive and well...Tom Scioli, Darwyn Cooke, Bruce Timm, Erik Larsen, Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, Glenn Murakami, Mike Mignola and so many more. People I want to draw like and unabashedly I will ape when I am in the mood: Steve Rude Alex Toth Jack Kirby Don Bluth special addition: Frank Frazetta (I wish I could ape his work, but it's impossible at this stage of my art game) I don't know too many people that can match you five powerhouses in execution, passion and imagination.

Thank you so much for your kind words and for mentioning those incredible artists. I'm honored to be included alongside such legends. It's true that Alex Toth, Jack Kirby, and Don Bluth have had a profound influence on my work. Their unique styles, masterful storytelling, and unwavering passion have inspired me throughout my artistic journey. Frank Frazetta is another absolute powerhouse. While his level of detail and dynamic compositions may be challenging to replicate, his work continues to amaze and inspire me. I'm always striving to improve my skills and learn from the best. Your encouragement means a lot and motivates me to keep pushing forward.

When I was a kid I had no real appreciation for Kirby. I recognized the energy and the dynamism, but the drawing/design work put my desire for augmented realism off. It took Steve's work in Nexus to turn that lightbulb on -- like here, he showed the underlying link Kirby had to contemporary fantastic drawing for comics

That's a great insight. It's amazing how our appreciation for art can evolve over time. I'm glad my work helped you discover the beauty of Kirby's illustrations.
