Thank you for this Breakdowm. I really appreciate the way you and Benny explain calmly so many perspectives of this rapid. I like how you recommend where to look as I always seem to look right at Phil’s and swammed it again yesterday. Arghh! Will try to remember all this stuff next time.

14min in, Benny gives some of the best advice you can get on paddling big water. Thanks for the tip!

This is one of the best teaching videos I have ever seen. As a first timer on the Ottawa this year I swam McCoy's twice and got my way down on the right side of Phil's hole twice. My first swim was trying to run Phil's tongue, which went ok, but I stopped paddling too soon. I think if I tried to cross over and catch one of the eddies on the left, I would have made it. Anyway I look forward to coming back next year and having another excellent week with an OKS instructor. After my week on the Ottawa, I came back very confident on the relatively tame rapids we have in New England. Thanks Casey, please do a video for the Lorne, Norman's, Coliseum and any other rapid you can. I will watch this one 50 times before I come back. Cause dude, I need revenge on McCoy's !

Great video! I am heading out to the Ottawa for a paddle next week for the first time in years, so this was an awesome refresher

Very clear video. Really helped me understand McCoy’s from top to bottom. I don’t think I’m ready for it, but I feel better that I will be sooner thanks to this video. Thanks, Casey!

Great episode Casey (and Benny)! I've yet to paddle McCoy's without rolling and/or getting pushed to river left (and I once did a rocky roll along the shore of football island)... but I love the challenge! Watching the Keeners run lines down McCoys was really enlightening and so was this video! It was super helpful seeing how Benny approaches the lines, floating his kayak at an angle and then squaring up to a wave. The reminder about looking where you want to go and leading with your downstream shoulder was helpful too. The Boof move at Sattlers was a new line for me - looking forward to trying it. How to get into Settler's eddy was super helpful, as was using football eddy to get to 7/8 hole. Thanks for the thought, effort and time to make this video!

Really liked this video. As a bigger I love seeing the different perspectives of the rapid so I understand the water and what it's doing. Thanks Casey!

Great video, I wish I had this 20 years ago when I first ran McCoys. Lots of good detail here, something to watch over and over again during the winter months. I never tried tongue to tongue, Benny makes it look so easy. I expect I would end up in the left side of Phils if I tried it but maybe next time I am on the river. I will be checking out the rest on your channel. With the rapids varying so much by water level, it would be great to have different videos at different levels or more mention of what to watch out for. McCoys generally gets less intimidating at higher water levels, but that is not so true of some of the downstream rapids.

Very happy to have watched this. I had a bad swim in 7/8 around this level and ya, it's a nasty time. With all the focus on the hazards, this really has helped me grow my understanding of the rapid. Looking forward to running it again after watching this.

Very cool, Jay had us go through Sattlers for the first time last year, I've always done thread the needle, and the one attempt of Phil's tongue I ended up going into right side, but that was back in 1999
