No need to use bombers to put missiles on either side. As a matter of fact I'm tempted to say that in a way, the use of bombers is an obsolete nuclear strategy. First of all radars through satellite communications can detect everything on either side. Second, the latest nuclear delivery missile systems fly at a hypersonic speed. At least Russia possess them, the US is still lagging behind on that technology. Obviously this documentary is from 2016.

During the cold war I was a radarman aboard the USS Watchman (Long ago decommissioned) which was in a squadron of radar picket ships. We were the seaward extension of the North American Defense Command. There was one on the East coat also. We reported incoming (to the US) aircraft to the Air force on the West Coast. There were 5 stations that were about 500 miles out which were 25 mi in diameter that we floated around in for 30 to 40 days until we were relieved and returned home to Treasure Island in the San Francisco Bay. During time in the northern most stations we would regularly track B52s coming (we assumed) out of North Dakota. As they left the west coast they turned northwest and were soon out of our coverage. They would eventually return and another would soon appear on the same westerly track. We assumed they were headed to Russia. One day there were two rather than one....we knew something had changed. I am an old Man this was long ago ...1962...I was 22 years old. If my memory serves me right those two B52s became 3 B52s. We eventually learned of the Cuban Missile crisis.

I honestly don’t think the people in control really understand how devastating nuclear weapons are, there talked about like a regular bomb, I think the sooner the people in control can truly give the respect that these weapons truly deserve the better off the world would be, cause in the mind of most people familiar with nukes, you know to talk about them and the actual idea of one going off in lines you with almost certain death, it’s like being put in front of a firing squad and waiting for the sound of that bang, then your lights go out, and at the end of day the simple people like me writing this, we are the ones that get used like sheep, the wealthy can run and hide and live, it’s wrong we need to stand up now people, come together military and all no more foolishness, I love life and love people, so who’s wars would it be.

They say Russia would start using nukes against the US if they found they were in a conventional war because the US is weak and scared and wouldn't retaliate. In reality the US would respond by vaporizing all of Russia and Russia would do the same. It's called MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction).

To just compare throw weights, and the delivery platforms, is too simplistic. I'd rather oppose a nation with twice our stockpile that had no other advanced systems and no advanced decoy (drones). The point is, we'd have a fair chance at avoiding trouble if an errant launch went off, or a lone dictator took a 'pot shot' at us...But a nation about equal to us would sadly be able to do to us what we could do to them. This MAD situation has prevented world wars, but can it continue forever??

We do not know what may trigger such a thing, and to be resolved not to allow mishap. It is unfortunate that more nations are developing capability to engage in such a war. I lived through the Cold War and remember waking up one day in 1983 and seeing on the news Soviet tanks ready for battle, and wondered what's going on. We, the public, didn't know at that time how close the USSR got to launching a full nuclear strike after they mistakenly believed we would do so first. I was hoping I'd already be dead before this ever became an issue again. Here's a documentary on KZbin about it (that scared the crap out of me) called "Able Archer 1983: Brink Of Apocalypse" kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoHMpWV4fLN-rdE For those alive at that time keep in mind, this really happened and it was VERY close more times than one. It's a miracle we're still here, and you'll see that's no exaggeration.

in hindsight, this should relieve you. when the world powers were at their utmost highest alerts and most willingness to annihilate each other. they chose to NOT launch. both sides saw NO benefit.... both sides saw no victory. and now, almost 30 years later. this mentality has only grown more passive. even though the russian's may see the west as weaker mentally. they also know there is a line they can't cross. it's basic common sense. if the west feels their end is eminent. they WILL respond in kind. and russia is more than aware that the west is vastly more protected against nuclear weapons' than russia can even come close to. as a USAF officer retired, i can say that the US and western entities feel as though we could counter at least half, if not more. of russian ICBM's and SLBM's. thus, for every 10 missiles russia launches. most will never hit their targets. and yes, those missiles that do make it to their targets will be devastating. it will pail to compare to what russia will face. while the west will see several major cities decimated. russia will be no more, period. we know this... russia knows this. and that is exactly why no ww3 will ever happen. you see, while russia must fire upon many nations in europe, asia and north america. ALL of the response from the those will be not only focused on russia. but focused on western russia. the hub of it's economic and industrial complexes. all that will be left of russia. is a great oil reserve open one day AFTER the radiation levels have come down to safe levels. and the only thing left of russia, is what we find in the nonfiction section of a library or online web sight.

Haven't seen the video here, but there is one little thing I do know. You can compare nuclear forces and come to some conclusions about their relative capabilities, but they do not compete against each other or fight each other. They deliver nuclear bombs to targets. Even if there is a defense, any successes an attacking force has will erode that defense. Eventually, it will be bombs away for both sides and everything on either power's target list will be a smoking ruin. It's guaranteed. Even one nuclear bomb can ruin your whole day.

Hiroshima was restored in two years. Radiation levels decreased by over 80% in 24 hours and the city was habitable. That was with 1945 nuclear bomb technology. Over 60% of their surface attack missiles fail to hit thier target, not including the ones that are shot down.

Wouldn't Russia shoot down those B52 bombers carrying nuclear weapons?? I would have thought they'd be shot down way before they got close to launching their missiles?? Same with any missiles that would be launched from silos, won't the Russians already have their own nukes aimed at any kind of threat in any European countries that has weapons belonging to the US based there? I know here in the UK we have quite a few American air force bases here so I'm pretty sure they would get hit straight away. If a war ever started where nuclear weapons were used probably the best place to be would maybe be a sub, you atleast Wouldn't be killed by any explosion but there would be nowhere left for you to go anyway, so no winners whatsoever thats why its so mind boggling to think anyone could ever consider starting nuclear war.

The big question is: Is a "limited" nuclear war possible? In the 1970s we had the strategy of "mutual escalation". That means You don't start the war with a big target and You don't use all of Your weapons, but You start with a small amount of missiles and destroy at first minor targets. Then You "escalate" by destroying targets with higher and higher priority - step by step. The clue behind it was to get time for negotiations and stop it right on time - before the apocalypse. But even our smartest experts never knew if this would really work as planned.
