They should bundle old DLC so new players don't have to buy so much at once but there's nothing anti consumer about game devs expecting to get paid for continually adding new stuff to a 6 year old game

Thing is they still make great games no matter which way you slice it, and it's not like the money they get from DLC is wasted - the game's been continually updated for 7 years now and so many systems have been changed and improved from the original to the point that maybe at best 20% of the current game is the unmodified original. Literally the only problem with Paradox is their DLC pricing policy and the fact they don't reduce the prices over time for some retarded reason. If they literally just reasonably priced the DLCs even when not on sale, this would not be an issue. Aside from that, they are some pretty amazing developers.

This is what puts me off paradox games. I start off buying the base game at launch and 1 or 2 dlc later I start to get burnt out playing it. After a short break from the game and coming back, there's now 60 euro + of more dlc I have to buy... Paradox really go overboard on these mico- expansions and charge out the ass for them. How about only release 2 or 3 expansions over the course of the game but make them BIG with tonnes of content? And stop locking what should be fixes to the base game behind a paywall and listing it as a "feature"

This was (and still is) exactly my situation: all updates, no DLC. I watched dozens of hours of Shen's videos, and decided to take the plunge on a Halloween sale. Bought the game for the equivalent of 10 dollars. Just like you, I started with Portugal. The game loads and... 20 FPS on speed 1. My PC just can't handle all that country-on-country action. OK, that's fine. The great music carries me through the setting up of what would certainly be a great campaign as an early colonizer. I click on my explorer to get a mission going... No missions. My intrepid explorer is stuck policing trade like an idiot. After sluggishly getting through the first years of the game, I get into a war with Morocco. Everything is going well, Spain is helping me out with some sieges, and... No transfer of sieges. At all. After an inhuman amount of finagling with the "allow friendlies to attach" button to get the sieges on all the provinces I wanted, I finally piece out and get a few provinces. Well, institutions are just around the corner, so I better star dev pushing them somewhere! Let me open a province and... Nope. No developing. (This was almost six months ago, mind you). Everywhere I went, I found another paywall on a game I already bought. No edicts, no colonization, no army templates...all this at 20 FPS. On speed 1. I quit playing after an hour, maybe two. It idly sits on my PC to this day. Europa Universalis 4, one of the best Grand Strategy games ever made, gathering digital dust. Of course, this is also my fault. I should have checked the hardware requirements, I should have looked into what I was buying. But the paywalls, those were not my fault.

I just recently got into CKII and a few days ago I finished collecting the major DLC and while I'm loving what Paradox makes, the paywalls on basic mechanics are anti-consumer as fuck. After spending around $100-ish on CKII and its DLC, I'm definitely going to pirate EU4 if I'm going to play it at all, since everyone seems to be saying you need to put hundreds of hours into the game to not get totally destroyed anyways(and therefor I've no reason to expect I'll need the ability to play online).

Fyi, Infante Pedro was the regent of Portugal from 1439 to 1448. He was the king's brother, so a prince. Infante is his title, means prince. He was regent for his nephew Afonso who became D.Afonso V. As usual, eu4 is spot on.

The worst thing is they actually remove free feature. In the base game without patch you could transfert province to your vassal via diplo decision. They removed it in a patch and then added a dlc for the vassal management screen.

Hey, about the "going around Greenland" thing, it seems like a mistake, but actually, historically, the lack of fish in the Atlantic ocean during the 15th century pushed the fishermen to go even further across the ocean, and some of those fishermen most likely set foot in North America before Christopher Colombus even had the idea of taking a boat through the ocean. However, if this happenned, it would most likely not be the deed of Portuguese fishermen (most likely from Britanny or maybe the British Isles)

that's the funny thing about paradox dlc in historical games. some things are just straight up missing like: sorry india you can never be independent because the uk didn't pay £20 to a company that will exist in like 60 years
