Breaking in a New Generator

Never seen someone do this before, and it certainly doesn’t hurt the machine. I’d siesta high loads as a part of te process. That thing can power some stuff, so put it under the load. Thanks for the idea! Manufactures typically suggest the bare minimum and you clearly take pride in what you do. Thanks!

The oil will drain faster & more thoroughly if you loosen the oil cap a bit - even just a smidge, to allow for at least SOME kind of airflow, will do the trick. It won’t come shooting out too quickly or cause any huge messes for you or anything if it’s loosened just enough to break the cap’s air-tight seal. It will drain more effectively & so much more efficiently. 🤷‍♀️ I’m sure you & many many many MANY ppl out there are quite familiar w/this & employ it themselves…. I’m NOT suggesting nor insinuating that this is some kind of unknown/secret “trick” or anything like it. 😂 I simply wanted to put it out there for anyone who may not be familiar w/ emptying air-tight tanks, etc. &/or finds it useful/interesting. :)

You left out the most important steps. 1 what grade and type of oil did you use, synthetic or regular oil? Some people say you should never try to break in a new engine with synthetic oil. 2 You should have drained each change into a clean container so you could inspect the oil for metal particles. All you did was burn gasoline.

Thank you so much. I'm a novice. I didn't know which way to turn the oil plug and didn't want to break anything. I've been through about 5 other videos. None of them showed that much detail including the firman. They assume that people already know that. Most of us are not mechanics and just need a generator.

Two things..... 1). There’s absolutely no reason to drain and refill the oil as you did. 2). They provide a handy electric start button. Try it. You’ll like it.

@stan Clark Unless the manufacture broke the generator in. It is a good idea to drain the oil after an hour break in.

I agree on the oil change. Just fallowed directions. I did use the old oil on concrete form boards and outside wood furniture. The start button didn't work. Charged the battery. Still no worky. Called company, no response. Any suggestions?

@@seancurry8137 check the battery voltage if you have a means. That may be your problem.

I’m not trying to force you to. There’s a very important advice on this video that everyone really needs to be aware of. I just hope you all agree with this video I’m sharing. We all feel bad that people who get hurricanes die from carbon monoxide when using generators.

@@seancurry8137 sorry to hear your having problems with your electric start. I also have a firman however mine works so far. The manual mentions holding the button down for 3 seconds while on start then switching it over to run. Worked for me the first time I started it up.

Got the same generator but yellow in 2018 never changed the oil . Had a out 658 hours on it. Drained the tank and put it away for the summer last year. Needed it for the last power outage and the gas tank was completely rusted inside . It was junk . Took it back to costco

The manual states 25hrs on 1st oil change and then every 100hrs. That oil was super clean. BTW use Amsoil full synthetic 10w-30 for longer life. Cool vid. Update: Did 4hr breakin on it and chg the oil after but noticed that it burns the oil rather quickly. Maybe is b/c the warm weather I live idk still is a bargain

These are good generators I ended up buying a gasoline only Generac E8000. I wanted to have option to run propane so I kept an eye on these and the champions sold locally.

You don't have to do that. come ready to run. In an emergency situation You don't have time to do that Before you run next time , change

Your pull cord will last longer if you take up the slack first before yanking it when cranking it. Good vid though 👍🏼👨‍🌾

Exactly. The user manual states that a break in is exactly 20 hours, then the second oil change is 6 months

Not 10 times, but a few times is good... to get the metal flakes out from the initial break in.

No petcock valve. But my experience with the generator overall been good.

i have a new ....unopened box , Firman wo3386 gen with remote start , i searched every where and on the firman web site it states to change the oil after twenty five hours and that is it ! , seems strange .

Those are good but very noisy. I have one that I hardly use. To the point that it has been replaced by a Honda inverter 7000.

Oh my, I bought mine at Costco for $799. I can purchase and power up 5 homes for the cost of 1 Honda 7,000. And you can’t find Honda’s any longer since Honda lost their EPA Certification. I know you are going to say “just look on the internet for $2300-$2500”, but if you try to buy one of those they really aren’t in stock.
