He already went to jail and served time. I think he did a year in jail. He's been publicly humiliated and his chances at acting again in mainstream are severely crippled. Justice was served. Just not on paper. Usually it's the other way around.

You're missing the biggest issue with the original deal. The state's attorney Kim Foxx recused herself due to knowing the family. She had even spoken to the family about the case when it was still thought that he was a victim. Later, she reinserted herself into the case stating she had not "formally recused" herself. That's when he got the original deal that their own police were disturbed over considering how much effort they put into investigating the hoax. The police felt he should have at least reimbursed the city for all the man hours put into it and the mayor strongly agreed.

He did not appeal to overturn the evidence and that the jury has made the wrong call, he appealed because they shouldn't charge him when he accepted that fraudulent deal. Therefore in the eyes of public he will remain guilty and his reputation justly destroyed.

In the beginning you stated additional charges, then changed it to "charge him anyways" which one is it? I would think if it is additional charges, that is legal, they're not going against the original agreement in that case. He deserved jail time and a much larger fine!
