I'm located in Europe, but from an outside point of view it's clear Trump needs an increased debt ceiling for the tax cuts he has promised. The tax cuts will probably cost somewhere between 3 - 7 trillion dollars over 10 years. Should not come as a suprise that Trumps wants to remove the debt ceiling if he plans on significantly reduce federal revenue.

You could tax the wealthy at 90% and not even come close to even paying the interest on the debt which equals the largest portion of the nation's budget. All that would do is drive profits for businesses down and create an economic depression like never-before seen because they are wealthy enough to leave the country and move somewhere more favorable. By the way, I'm an economist and wrote a thesis on this very subject in college. Lowering taxes across the board actually generates the most revenue for government. It's called the "Laffer Curve." Look it up.

So was a lot of conservatives. Desantis is a phenomenal governor. He would make a great president. I voted for Trump, but I would vote for Desantis. Chip Roy preferred the way Desantis governs, and he probably thought Trump would be constantly being stifled like he was his first term where Desantis would not. Desantis lost. Chip Roy is now behind Trump. He just doesn't agree with Trump that we should raise the debt ceiling. He has always opposed raising the debt ceiling. That's why his constituents vote for him.

I believe Roy and Trump have similar goals and that is to greatly reduce government waste and spending. Now Trump just wants to avoid a shutdown with a reasonable CR until he gets into office and then Vivek and Musk can do their magic. Roy wants to wage war on spending now, before Trump is even in office: this will be very difficult.

The fact that Trump wants the debt ceiling eliminated for two years is a major disappointment. Extend it for 6 months. If there is no progress in cutting spending and it looks like none is coming by then, he can suck it. Promises made, promises broken.
