“Dongpo: Life in Poems,” an original contemporary operatic dance, produced and performed by the China Oriental Performing Arts Group & Meishan Song and Dance Theatre.
The production is based on the poetry and life experiences of the renowned Chinese poet Su Dongpo (1037-1101), and it is genial with the audiences who do not have a background in ancient Chinese history, Dongpo's poetry, or even Chinese language. It summarizes the poet's emotions throughout his life into 12 pieces of his poems from the Song Dynasty. The contemplation, questioning, dreaming, intoxication, sorrow, lingering, and unrestrained emotions expressed in these poems are accessibly experienced and easily awakened to all beings in their vast and diverse lives, regardless of their Eastern or Western origins. During the performance, such emotions can be comprehended and transformed into contemplation of varying degrees.
Guests from different sectors attended the pre-show reception, including Chinese embassy minister Jing Quan and China Arts and Entertainment Group Chairman Li Jinsheng. Over 1,500 audience members witnessed the performance.
As part of Image China's cultural exchange initiative, the production, "Dongpo: Life in Poems" serves as a reminder of the power of art to transcend time and culture.
