When you used the opener upper on the control cavity it made a crack on the other side. I see it went away after you clamped it. You might try Zpoxy instead of wood glue as it will run into the crack better and you might not need the opener upper. Great video

Love how it’s shaping up! Btw, what are you doing with the broken headstock? Maybe you can make something out of it like a top of a box for picks/capos/etc. Or perhaps something to hang on a wall. Or maybe something artsy fartsy, lol. It should be used somehow so we symbolically show Gibson not to waste any part of a perfectly good guitar just because of a double or serial number or whatever.

Once the coating was sanded off I would have tried swelling the dents back up with water. I’ve done this in the past building guitars and accidentally putting a dent in the body dropping a tool on it. I learned the water trick from an old timer. I used q-tips. Great to see it in caring hands now.
@scarmyguitar
@scarmyguitar Жыл бұрын
Yeah I used to steam dents out too, but I've found that 5 yrs later those dents will start showing under the paint because the pressure from the dent in that area made the wood softer than the rest so that area ages differently, I guess. Not sure but they sure do come back. Best to fill em when painting is my experience.

That guitar is coming along nicely. What a wonderful job on a guitar that was left for scrap. It sickens me to know that Gibson has such a thing done to perfectly fine instruments meant to be played and enjoyed. Time and effort from skilled luthers and CNC machine operators placed into building such a fine piece of art, on top of the expense, completely wasted, where their is so many individuals who would love to have one, but cannot afford to. You are certainly very talented and skilled in guitar repair and restoration. Knowing that someone like yourself is willing to take the time, effort and expense to use those talents and skills to repair and restore such a damaged guitar is truly uplifting and heartwarming. This video is wonderful and shows that your heart is in the right place when it comes to guitars.

What a great score! Another great cheat for clamping up a custom head stock veneer is to use a granite tile against the veneer side and scrap wood on the back! I used this technique on my Hagstrom 12 string electric and it worked great! As for restoring it, screw that! A Scar My Guitar "Deluxe" is WAY more unique! Looking good so far, I hope it plays like a dream for ya when it's done!

I bought a box from Home Depot for 25 bucks for 5 1 foot squares with beveled corners, as I engraved (Carbide cutters that I sharpen myself, otherwise it would have cost me over $300 just for cutters) a Monopoly board across 4 of 'em, painted the engraving gold and inlaid them into a table. I know it’s stronger but my concern would be if it’s going to show through the paint where wood filler would match the wood creating an even paint color. Happy New Year btw.
