The term "Speaker-Designate" is used when their conference tally(GOP only) gave him at least the minimum number of votes to be elected. None of the other candidates, (Scalise, Jordan, Emmer) had attained that. If they stick to how they voted in their conference, Johnson will be elected. FWIW he is a no-nonsense, humble man, something rare for D.C.

There was a time in our nation's past where self-promoters were the one's that were overlooked and unwanted. Back then, the people supported those running for office who were promoted by their peers! Some of our greatest politicians and statesman were selected by their peers and promoted to power. Men like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln! Men who were chosen over their bolder and more brash counterparts like John Adam's and Stephen Douglas because humility was a valued virtue in our country. Sadly, in this day and age, humility is scoffed and laughed at! While self promoting narcissists are the ones promoted! LA Rep Mike Johnson is a rare exception to the norm these days! Quiet and unassuming, but someone who commands great respect by his peers. He's also very intelligent and articulate about the issues, and should be a great speaker for the Republicans...if they can unite behind him. That remains to be seen at this point??? But I've always been a fan of Johnson's. Here's hoping he gets the nod and the votes!
