When that happened the other group went to stop him from building the wall and this brought about violence where some people were hurt and the police become involved. The other group went to report the case to Otumfuor. He had directly went against the verdict of Otumfuor. Also, he harmed the other group through violence according to the statement of the other group by hiring "macho men" to attack them when they tried to preventhim from building wall. In Ashanti customs, going against the direct word of the King is treason and inciting violence through your authority is a frowned upon and it's a disgrace to your role, hence his destoolment. He looks pitiful, but in Ashanti customs law is law. Even Otumfuor is not above the law.

It seems as though they are not really allowed to defend their case very well. The Okyeame already has a stance which makes it difficult to even explain the ins and outs of the case. In as much as the kings may be at fault, I think they need to be given apt time to defend their case.

As beautiful and swift traditional adjudication process is, it also underscores certain impediments which requires representation by lawyers. Unfortunately, our traditional system does not make room for lawyers. The Okyeame is perhaps supposed to be impartial and provide vocal support for both plaintiffs and defendants, but in the setting just witnessed, he can very well overwhelm a party to the extent that they become confused. Time to have two Okyeames, one for plaintiff and another for defendant, and a third to surmise everything for Otumfuo. That is the way, in my opinion, for the process to flow.

But understand that before a case comes to the King for adjudication, a group of chiefs are selected to investigate the matter before referring it to the Otumfuo for final adjudication. And, as you may have seen recently, Otumfuo gives individual parties the chance to make their case in front of him. After that he throws it to all the sub-chiefs to also comment on the case before he delivers his final verdict. And I agree that sometimes it is quite intimidating speaking before the great King. Per Otumfuo's statements, he allowed that chief too much room as he is his brother from childhood to do things he wouldn't have tolerated, but wanted him to spend all his years on the stool but he was becoming too unbecoming with his actions. Don't go and do anything on the disputed land, but you say I went there to make a wall around my cemetary? Now that he is no more a chief, let's see what becomes of the wall around the cemetary.

When your case reach this stage, you are your own lawyer. He could have sought refuge (dwantua) in a revered chief of his fekuo to step in before the case could reach this far. This is also our tradition, the western style should not always be the yardstick.
