Democracy Now! speaks with two former Israeli soldiers who are members of Breaking the Silence, an anti-occupation group of Israeli army veterans. The group’s education director, Tal Sagi, describes growing up in a settlement and joining the military without understanding what occupation was. “We’ve been told that this is security and we have to control millions of lives and we don’t have other options,” says Sagi, who says Israeli society is not open to ending the occupation. “We’re trying to say that there are other options.” We also speak with Breaking the Silence deputy director Nadav Weiman about why the group is touring U.S. colleges and calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. “We stood in checkpoints. We raided homes. We attacked Gaza from the air. We fought from the ground,” says Weiman. “So, when you bring reality, you bring real conversation about the occupation, and you bring real conversation about Gaza.”

As Tal Sagi says, when you grow up in an apartheid state and it is all you know, you don't question it. I grew up in South Africa and was a teen in the early 90's before the national elections. I remember the side walks. Whites walked on one side and non-whites on the other. I didn't question it because it was normal. As a child, I couldn't understand why our maid wasn't allowed to come to the beach with us but I didn't question it. When you grow up in the sort of environment and it is normal, you don't see anything wrong with it. It is only in retrospect that you realise the horrors of what happened and how we dehumanised the majority of the South African population.

What hit me was the lady saying “they don’t see how much this affects the Palestinians and Israelis” right after she said she spent her whole life living as a settler and giving fun tours to other soldiers fully not knowing what’s happening to the Palestinians. Like please tell me, how was it affecting her life? And then the guy continues to say “being pro israel is being pro peace” after describing in detailes how he terrorized civilians, helped unalive civilians while talking literally about them in mathematical terms as collateral damage, and justifying the destruction of homes as being in their way while they targeted more civilians.
@SnowsStorm1

I don't know what the rationale is for attacking when they're on with their families because that is some thing I would like to hear the other perspective on, but you'll notice that she didn't say that they were dropping missiles on civilians where there wasn't a terrorist residing there. And for all your hand ringing, what about all of the Arab violence. The anti-israeli crowd keep saying that these people should have been speaking out about is really violence long before now, but when would you think that they should have been doing this ? When should they have spoke out against "Jewish acts of violence? " Should they have spoken out between 1920 and 1938 when 100% of the violence was coming from the Arabs? Should they have spoken out when the Arabs staged a violent revolt from 1936-1939, committing attack after attack until the British agreed to appease them by shutting off all Jewish immigration in to what was slated to become their homeland. Should they have spoken out when an entire boat full of Jewish war refugees were left to drown rather than breaking that agreement and allow them to reach the holy land? Should they have spoken out when the Palestinian mufti violentlu r*aped and otherwise brutalized Jews in Baghdad, driving 150,000 of them from their homes in what was referred to as the 1941 Farhud-a campaign that was the first of what was to be a million Jews who were dispossessed of their homes in the Middle East Should they have spoken out when the laid siege to Jerusalem and tried to starve the Jews out of leaving their homes? Should they have spoken out when the Arabs declared war in 1948? Should they have spoken out when the Arabs repeatedly attacked civilians along the border and kept trying to destroy every attempt the Israelis made at building water infrastructure Should they have spoken out when the Arabs moved their armies in to position and sent the un peacekeepers out of the region, effectively starting the war in 1967. Should they have spoken out when the Arabs acquired missiles from the Soviets and violated their ceasefire agreement during the war of attrition in 1970? Should they have spoken out when the Arabs once again declared war in 1973? Should they have spoken out when the Israelis turned over all of Gaza in the hopes of moving the peace process forward, facilitated the arrival of billions in infrastructure materials needed to improve their water pipe lines and even left a booming floral industry, told them jumpstart the economy only for the military to instead use those pipe and the fertilizer for the construction of missiles It should they have spoken out on the Arabs began the first intifada, and started killing thousands of Jews, in their marketplace, in their restaurants, and there public transportation? Should they have spoken out when Yasser Arafat walked away from what many believe was the best chance the two groups ever had at peace and a second intifada was begun? You would be correct and pointing out that this conflict didn't begin on October 7 but I'd like to know when in that history you believe we all should've been speaking out against all of the Israeli violence because I don't see when in that history you had in mind!

To the young woman, we are all being jolted out of our comfort zones of not realizing the truth of our lives and our county’s policies. As an American I am angry because this whole operation is against what we as a country are supposed to be. How is this living up to our values for human rights? It’s beyond my worst nightmares. You are so right. They should have spoken out about jewish violence in the region before now. I wonder when you think they should have started? When should they have spoke out against "Jewish acts of violence? " Should they have spoken out. between 1920 and 1938 when 100% of the violence was coming from the Arabs? You would be correct in pointing out that this conflict didn't begin on October 7 but I'd like to know when in that history you believe we all should've been speaking out against all of the Israeli violence because I don't see when in that history you had in mind!

I have to ask, what other way could have Palestinians, even Hamas, could have been listened to, to register their hopelessness and outrage at the occupation and treatment given them for decades - to be taken seriously - BESIDES a surprise attack of violence? They tried for so long to oppose the apartheid and control that Israel continued to justify and ignore. I don't condone the violence against Israel - but really - what would have convinced the Israeli's that these inequalities and injustice were morally, politically, and militarily - unsustainable to achieve peace and safety for Israel or Palestinians?

I am slowly realizing how conditioned I am to horrors. The series THE CROWN warned its audience of traumatic scenes of Diana throwing up. But the episode of the death of the Romanoffs began with graphic footage of the slaughter - no cautionary intro. This hit me between the eyes, blew my mind. I am 86 and grew up watching WWII movies. No TV. But those movies inserted and fed ideas I am now seeing. AI began long before the tech mechanism. Manufacturing reality became possible when we were driven off the land, into cities, away from nature, our fathers no longer home, able to guide and protect. Rape became the most unreported epidemic ever to devastate the human race. To this day. As I said, wake up time

@@celienat9369 I think what bothers me most is that neither sounded any apologetic for what they have done; the lady said lived her entire life enjoying the land she occupied then went on to say that settlers don’t understand how much the situation affects israelis, and the guy spent the whole time justifying what he did during his service to make it sound unintentional or somehow against their will, especially the part when he said that they bulldozed the homes in gaza because they planned to take over a home assuming the other two weren’t there, and the part where he justified the targeting of a whole family because they didn’t want to alarm the one target they were going after.

I feel like I'm feeling more humanity and remorse from the lady than the man. She seems to be quite uncomfortable answering the questions which indicates that there is some level of guilt and understanding of what she had done and that she sees and acknowledges how awful the Israeli society is. As for the guy, it's quite bone-chilling for me to hear him talk about his experiences in such a factual manner without any emotions. Like he was simply telling someone else's story and not his own. And the way he beams with pride while talking about the work that he does with the organization as though he's doing such great humanitarian work is frankly quite repulsive (especially considering the fact that he's probably killed many innocent Palestinians and is still walking free)

when he says "we",he is taking responsibility for the fact he was involved in the IDF and these operations.If he said "they"it would distance him and make it sound as if he had no involvement.This is what taking responsibility and ownership looks like. It is exactly people like him speaking out and talking about these tactics used and violations as he sees them of occupation NOT defence. I don't know what more you expect when he is going against all the education and training he has been given bringing brought up in Israel. I don't know what you're not hearing about condemning what they did in Gaza but you must be listening to something very different or maybe its just your own blindness and inability to hear what he is saying.

Bertrand Russell’s last message (March 15, 1970) AS IF HE WROTE IT TODAY. “The development of the crisis in the Middle East is both dangerous and instructive. For over seven decades Israel has expanded by force of arms. After every stage in this expansion Israel has appealed to ‘reason’ and has suggested ‘NEGOTIATION’. This is the TRADITIONAL ROLE OF THE IMPERIAL POWER, BECAUSE IT WISHES TO CONSOLIDATE WITH THE LEAST DIFFICULTY WHAT IT HAS TAKEN ALREADY BY VIOLENCE. EVERY NEW CONQUEST BECOMES THE NEW BASIS OF THE PROPOSED NEGOTIATION FROM STRENGTH, WHICH IGNORES THE INJUSTICE OF THE PREVIOUS AGGRESSION. The aggression committed by Israel must be condemned, not only because no state has the right to annex foreign territory, but because every expansion is also an experiment to discover how much more aggression the world will tolerate.”
