It is actually not gravity that bends light. It is the atmosphere that bends the light as a refractive index. The JWST shows that these galaxies in question have a dusty atmosphere that does not show up in the optical range. This also implies that many of the high redshift objects might actually be in front of the galaxy and not lensed from behind, since such a dusty atmosphere does not allow light in the visible spectrum to come through from behind. Light bending requires an atmosphere. The Earth's atmosphere bends light over 1000 times the refractive index of the Sun's atmosphere.
